Today I was shown a one of these beautiful props. It featured a two piece scale hamilton standard hub {9 capscrews holding it togeather] with 3 individual carbon blades. The prop is 20"dia X 12" pitch adjustable + or - 2 deg. The blades had an aluminium insert in the cuff end with what looked like an M6 {1/4"}thread within. This insert was about 1.5mm {1/16"} larger than the carbon blade cuff & it seemed that this was all that was stopping the blade from flying out of the hub. Further inspection revealed that the blade cuffs were about 0.8mm {1/32"} larger in diameter than the bores in the hub halves thus the hubs also clamped the blades.
This prop is aimed at the 50 - 55cc range
Check out their website XXXXXXXXXX link edited out as it has nothing about models in it at all ???.
Has anyone tried them yet?

P.S.
I can't figure out what the thread in the end of the blade is for!!!???

For those in the USA, this is the same prop that TBM is now selling: http://www.troybuiltmodels.com/items/TBMPROP2012SCALE.html

Friends of mine has order two and will use them on his Ziroli P-38, and I look forward to his report.

They look like a great deal for 50-60 cc powered warbirds.

I have recieved 2 props that I have ordered from TBM and was planning to do a review on the thread I stated last week with pics but I've been having trouble finding time to do it.

I am pleased with the props I received. The hubs appear to be a high quality investment casting, the spinner dome may be turned from billet aluminum but I think it is investment cast also and it is chrome plated.

The blades are carbon fiber with a aluminum core at it's base and they appear to be high quality.
There is white silk screen markings on the blades that are covered with a clear top coat, so if you don't like the markings you will have to paint the whole blade.

One thing I picked up when assembling the first unit is that the markings for the blade pitch are not accurate. It was obvious to me with my eyes that one blade was off in pitch. I will have to sit down with a pitch angle wedge to check the pitch during final assembly.

Another thing is that I did not receive any instructions about assembling the unit. Most of it is obvious but what to torque the hub bolts to might be a critical step.

Overall this prop is a great value considering the high quality of the components.

Anyone run there prop yet and were you able to set pitch by the marks or did you us a pitch gauge? I got two of them for my B-25 and can only see the pitch marks on 2 out of the 6 blades.
Also I was thinking of putting a piece of wood in the hub as if it were a prop for a spacer to use the stock bolts with the stock hub washer for added strength. Just thinking....

Thanks Todd

I also picked up one of these units. It looks like a nice setup, But I'm skeptical about the way the blades are clamped into the hub. Is that all thats going to keep them from slipping/ rotating? I didn't get any instructions or info either. And the pitch marks are not visable when clamped in the hub so now I'll have to get a pitch gauge.

By inspecting the props i recieved i could see that the marks were not consistant with each other so I have decided to check the pitch with a homemade pitch gauge.

I have decided to check my blades pitch at the 50% blade diameter because as you can see the blade pitch angle decreases as you reach the prop tips.

To figure out what angle you want to make your pitch gauge use this formula.

I want to set the pitch at 50% blade diameter of this prop so i take 10 x pi (3.14). This value will be 31.415. this is the length of the outside of a 10" circle.

Now i want my wedge to be set for a 12 pitch prop. So i take 12 and divide 31.415. this value will be .3819

The next step you want to use the scientific function on you computer or phone ect.

Take .3819 and hit the key TAN -1 (inv or sec then tan will give you TAN -1)

This value will be 20.9, your prop pitch wedge will be 21 degrees.

10 pitch prop will be a 18 degree wedge
14 pitch prop will be a 24 degree wedge

To make your own prop pitch checking fixture, Take a piece of board, drill and install a 3/8 dowel rod in the top of one end.
For this 20" prop glue your angle checking wedge onto the board 5" from the center of the dowel rod.
drop the center of the prop hub onto the dowel and use the wedge to check each prop blade before the final torque of the hub.

Here is a web page with some angle formula information. http://www.mathsisfun.com/algebra/trig-finding-angle-right-triangle.html

As far as the how the blades are held onto the hub this design is similar to how the blades are retained with solo props.

Todd for my props i have bought some shorter 5mm cap screws and lock washers to mount the prop onto the hub

if there is a small difference in the pitch of the installed blades, will it show up in running? Will it be the same as an out of balance blade?

Just about ready. Set the pitch and run the engines. Going to paint the blades and put on the brand name sticker.

I will be curious to see how your painting goes. I balanced mine by painting the back with clear Stits paint. I roughed them up with sandpaper and so far one blade is fine but the other delaminated slightly (the added paint only) right at the tip. A bit of thin CA cured the problem but I have been told that painting CF props is a hit or miss affair.

Whit

Well guys I have ran about 4 tanks of fuel throw my new DLE 55 Rear muffler Motor

One of my my blades is way off from the rest, I got all 3 blades set at the 10 pich as Im trying to keep speed down and thrust up for my first maden flight.

Im going to guess becouse one was out of set, the blades made a wind sound like a weed wacker wire.

With the blades at 10 pich with the motor Im get 7800 RPM running a litte rich to help with cooling and breaking in.

 Just an update.

I did not have all 3 blades at 10 pich.  Now it's correct I'm getting 7100rpms with the DLE55RA at 10pich

This motor and corsair had about 20flights now and this motor can make just a little ripping sound on a WOT low pass

This prop is strong. On my 8th flight one of my retracts broke lose and the wheel turned a 90deg right after Tuch down, coused the corsair to nose over at 2200rpm and land on its tail.  It broke the firewall out of the ESM corsair

Caused no damage to the prop, fixed and flys great

Are the blades saying put? My biggest concern is the blades slipping out of pitch.

Mike;with that prop strike to the ground is the crank and rod still in good shape?a wood prop is a lil more forgiving.I would check the runout of the engine, just a thought.George.
