I was wondering if anyone had enlarged plans for the Sig Somethin Extra. I was hoping to put together somethin in the 20-30cc gas size. I have a standard kit and could just trace the wing ribs on the planes and hit up Kinkos but trueth be told, I'm not much of a scratch builder so I would need to get a short kit cut by one of the laser cutters out there. I used to have one of the ARF's and it flew so well I just wanted another with a gas powerplant. Anyone have any ideas how I could make one of the best sport flyers out there Somethin ExtraLarge? Has anyone already done it? I do recognize 60% of my ideas have already been done and the rest are just stupid.

Your better off going to Kinkos and giving them your plans and telling them the percent you would want it, they dial in there machine and just run the plans through. They may have to cut you plans a bit to be able to get them all on the paper but I usually cut my plans during a build anyway. Instead of that you could look around for an Extra kit or buy plans of the Extra in a bigger size unless it just has to be the something Extra. I just got the plans for a plane called the Prime Cut +20 from MAN, CAD drawn and the first perfect set of plans I have ever gotten from MAN. It's a Stand WAY the Hell Off Scale {Kinda} of a Sukhoi with a 90 inch wing. It looks like an easy build with a low parts count. Calls for a 45cc but as light as it will build a good 30 or 40 will fly it great. I'm using a Brison 2.4. These plans would be perfect for a kit cutter too. Just someting to give some thought to.

I've flown a few SSEs and built a few. I've got 2 here now and I'm thinking of extending the tail a few inches on a new one. They are excellent models and make great trainers. I'm trying to think of a heavy SSE. I don't know how it would fly but am curious now that you mention it. If going gas I would be sure to add counterbalances to the elevators and rudder. It's easy to modify them.

AK-Models used to offer a kit of an enlarged Somethin Extra. From what I recall it flew quite well. Always wanted to buy the kit, but as usual put it off for too long.

I like the idea. It would fly just as nice, just bigger. I even like the name! Somethin' ExtraLarge. Haw

Yes, it does have to be the Sig Somethin Extra. The flight characteristics of that plane is the very definition of "Fun Fly". I am currently 6000 miles away from my kit for a few more months so I can't look at the plans right now. However, I am guessing I will need to trace the ribs and formers on a seperate sheet to get enlarged. Sounds like a fun winter project to me. If I end up doing this, I will be sure to do a build thread.

I'm thinking 30% larger than the factory .40 sized model, bringing it out to about 67 in wing span. I would go bigger but I do not want to buy another 50cc engine.

I'm a fan of the SSE, and sadly I just totaled mine. I'm not sure I would want one in 30cc, but
I always thought a .60 size one would be very cool. I wonder why Sig never offered it in other sizes.
Sig missed an opportunity.

I have a DLE 20cc on my Sig P-51b ARF that is a ".60" model so going to a 30cc would be equivelent to about .90-1.20 sized model. I just prefer gas so I do not have to take a bunch of stuff to the field with me.

Sorry you lost your SSE

Sig had the mini electric SSE arf as well as the full sized arf. I always thought it too bad they didn't kit the mini one.

This is just me but I would go a bit bigger, up to 80 inch and go with a DLE 30 but 60 size is just fine too. Kinko's is the easy way but back in the olden days we used a projector and a blank wall with a big sheet of paper or several big sheets glued together and tacked to that wall. Project and copy by hand if you want to go back to the stone age.
Just cutting the plans and telling the machine operator what size or percent you want is a bunch easier.
it enlarges everything though so you have to give wood size a bit of common sense thinking. When you see a 1/4 inch thick rib you may want to only use 1/8 or 5/32. Kind of a TLAR thing. If the spars are balsa then maybe you may want Bass Wood? Enlarging plans and templates is a kick, I have been doing it for a long time to get the plane I wanted in the size I liked. Most of my big planes have been Bipes too. Way back when there were a lot of nice 40 size Bipe kits but not so many in bigger planes or big kits cost a bunch so doing it yourself was cheaper. Have a bunch of fun with your build when you get to it!!

Oh, I was planning on putting a 30cc on it I will have to get to my kit and see exactly how much larger I will need to make it to get the 30 on the fire wall. I was thinking about that, the 1/4in spars turning into 7/16 in when I enlarge the plans. It will take a little uncommon sense and TLAR meathod.

Once upon a time, a long long time ago in a completely different world, {Or it felt like a different world} One of the guys enlarged a set of plane. Nothing strange about that, but he built it with the enlarged wood size. Yes it was his first try at it and no, he never asked anyone.
