Hello,

New member here, getting back into the hobby after a long hiatus.  I've got a 56" Capricorn Apache and I'm looking to try and squeeze some more performance out of the boat.  I've outgrown its current performance to the point I'm a little bored with it and I'd love to squeeze some more top-end out of it.  I estimate it runs 30 mph give or take as it sits with the following setup;

-Mcculloch 32CC engine (stock internals)
-Walbro WA-167 carb with velocity stack
-Home made wet exhaust (non-tuned)
-Octura Strudder drive set back 3" off the transom on spacers (set sub-surface)
-Prather 275 2 Blade Prop

I figure a tuned exhaust setup would help however they appear few and far between for the Mac engine.  The only setup I've found is this one;

http://www.americanrcboats.com/products/engines/engmacex.htm

I already have a wet header on the motor so really I just need the pipe but haven't had any luck finding one that suits the motor.

Second I question whether going to a surface drive and different prop would be an improvement.  When I built the boat the hull designer really pushed the sub-surface setup.  Most of the big gas vees I see run surface drives so I wonder if this was a mistake.  I'd hate to cut the hull up to move the drive unless its really going to be worth it.

Any suggestions are appreciated.  I have some pics of my current setup if anyone would like to see.

Thanks.

Hi and welcome.
My recomendation would be to buy yourself a tuned 30 cc zenoah or k30 rcmk engine. You will never get decent performance from that mcculoch motor no matter what you do in my opinion.
I manufature a 58 Apache and with either of those engines you are looking at 50+ mph running a surface drive setup and a 7016/3 7015/3 prop.K30 is probs the best bang for the buck right now.
Mart

Hi,

Im with Mart on this one... You need to get a Zenoah in there and make it surface drive! I think the Zen needs to be pushing on 30cc to get the apache moving so it aint boring!!!
From what ive seen of the K30 its not just bolt in power.

Jack

I think the stock 29 cc zen would push her pretty niceley even in stock form, should swing a decent prop but i think for the money the k30 from RCMK is hard to beat. There are a few guys running the k30 in apaches and many other hulls and ive yet so see or hear of anyone whos been disapointed with them.I have heard of one guy who tried the k30 topend kit having issues but thats the only one i know of.
Incidently i ran my own personal boat with a modded 26 and she ran 50 all day and full speed in turns with no problem.
Mart
ps incidently my friend Bob has a k600 in one of my hulls with the k30 heads and hes more than impressed with the power.

personaly my experiance with a stock k30 out the box was a bit of a let down, also i know of at least three others that have been dissapionted with them aswell.
from what i read and have been told they have to be moddified correctly and heavily to get the results.
by all means a nice looking motor which is what attracted me to it and impressive specs, but it just goes to show looks arent everything.

my 58" apache of martins was originaly run with a mild modded zen 26. did 50mph easily

Why is the flexi shaft exposed to the water in the picture of the rudder buddy?

Looking at the rear of the boat you could get away with moving the flexi shaft to come out the back of the boat and lift your strut and rudder up.
You might need to make the rudder abit longer tho would cost a lot less to do.

Could even do it in stages make it surface drive will give you abit more performance with that motor.. Might let the engine rev more which is where the power is.

Then drop a nice zen in and enjoy even more power!!

Hi Top Gun ( Sorry no name on your Thread )

I will go along with Mart, i.m the one that runs his apache with the K600 in it, Firstly the reality is the Mac motor is never going to produce the power / Rpm for a 56" boat far to much bulk - weight, home made pipe probably no where near being in tune with the motor so you will loose out their as well.
The sub surface drive well ok but but the apache would be better with a stinger drive.

as the other guys have said the zen / K30 motors would benefit you greatly.

Bob.

Thanks for the responses,

I'm on the hunt for a good deal on a Zen motor.  If I were to swap to surface drive I want to do it right so as not to put more holes than necessary in my transom.  What drive hardware is recommended for a boat like mine?  I see a ton of different options with stingers/rudders/etc, I don't need anything too crazy but would like a proper setup.

buck for buck I would go with the speedmaster V2 available from gizmomotors USA probably the nearest to you, I use the V1 Speedmaster on both on my AC Lazer 45s with no problems with them over the past 3 years.

Bob.

i have the same hull i ran speedmaster hardware get the 6" rudder and a strut it will work great the hulls are a bit on the heavy side also most of his hulls came with 6" wide stringers so you will need to make up the difference for the new engine mounts all are made to fit 5" stringers just a heads up i now have a scale merc s6 drive on the back of mine have stuck my pro mod 30cc homelite back in for now my zen drank some water wnd well lets the only thing that was left are the engine mounts not one of my best days at the pond im going to replace it with a rcmk k 30 stock as im not going for all out speed with my boat im more into scale looks good luck with your refit

I would try a Zen but leave the shaft where it is, that is where the boat was designed for.
Or a strong Homelite.
Mac's were never really strong as boat motors.
A stock 260 with pipe and your same set up and even your same prop will bring the smile back.
