Hi,
I have a Fuji BT-32B that I have never started.  Never started a magneto engine before.  Flipped and flipped but no ignition.  Checked the magneto gap to specs and it is set at .5mm as directed.  Is there a way to check if the mag is giving any power to the plug?  Dont have a powered starter as my other engines are battery ignition and easily start by hand flipping.  I got this engine installed in a Giant Scale Super Chipmonk that I bought from a hobby store that was going out of business for a very low price.  All is great on the plane but cant get the damn engine to fire.  Think the engine is new and has never been never started.

Appreciate any ideas on this.  Thanks.

The magnets need to pass the coil at speed. You can't begin the prop at compression as you would a glow engine. I set my prop to begin with the magnets about 90* before passing the coil.

Good luck, it can be done.

Most magneto ignition engines need about 400 rpm to develop a sufficient spark for starting, so the prop needs a healthy flip and not the usual lame flip associated with electronic ignitions to get it going. As the previous poster indicated it is important when hand starting to develop the required prop speed before the magnet passes the sensor, as with the correct technique hand starting a magneto engine is fairly easy.

I've got the same engine in my Giant Super Sportster.

You can pull the plug and observe the spark (touch the threads to the engine head to ground it - wear rubber soles - it will be easier to see indoors).  While you have the plug out mark on the hub with a permanent marker where top-dead-center is by watching the piston through the plug hole.  Now, set your prop so it is at between 2:00PM and 3:00PM when observed from the front with the piston at TDC.  I also mark the prop with a black dot so I know which side has to be up when hand-proppng.     When you hand prop you want to be in good motion before the sensor magnet fires the coil.

open the throttle to half and rock the prop with your thumb over trhe carb barrel to draw fuel through (takes 30 pumps or so).  Close the choke and set the throttle to two clicks over lowest idle.  Prop until you get a chug, then open the choke and flip again.  After the initial chug mine almost always catches on the second or third flip.
