When you mentioned that new engine, my first thought was it might be a cool inline engine like the Kolm engine or something.
It is nice as a radial engine though. But I had some wishful thinking there for a few seconds.

I would trade out that ignition for three RCEXL units right from the beginning.

Hi w8ye that ignition system IS a rcexl, you can see the companies small sticker on the back.Apparently saito had them design one to their specs and brand it as their own.It seems to have fixed the early problems with the initial ignition system on the early fg20/30"s etc, cheers.

Give that ignition system to me & I'll put it on a 450R3 running glow fuel.

For anyone that has not heard the sound of the new Saito FG-84R3 radial running; here is a link to the video. It sounds awesome with its deeper throatier sound, very similar to the FG57T but with much more of the grunt power sound.

anyone notice the cooling vents cut out of the fuselage sides behind the wing? This thing must create some tremendous heat

Thanks for the video, Roger.  Why do people always have to put background music to these videos?  That annoys the you-know-what out of me.

The full sized plane has those vents hence it's a Scale Model. It's an SU26.

Ive done testing W/glow ignition (GI) CDI running glow fuel (GF) & CDI running E-85.

All on the same Saito FA150. I ran the engine W/the various configurations for 5 minutes @ WOT. They were shut down from WOT using the throttle trim & CHT taken between the rocker covers just ahead of the glowplug/sparkplug.

CDI running GF ran 20* F hotter than GI/GF

CDI running E-85 ran 60* F hotter than GI/GF CDI/gasoline will most likely run even hotter than CDI/E-85.

Yes that FG84 will run hotter than the FA450 & barely make the same HP

Run that nifty CDI sytem on an FA450 W/glow fuel & make more HP than the FG84 while running considerably cooler. I would supect engine life would be greater due to lower operating temperatures & cleaner burning alcohol fuel. The CDI will give you all the reliability of a gas burner & fuek consumption will be about 20% less than on glow ignition.

I looks as though they fire all three cylinders all the time.I wonder how that works. It would seem to me that would produce some backfireing.

Most automobiles fire the spark plugs every time the piston comes up also.

I think you're talking about a "maverick spark" setup? That ignition uses one sensor, fires all 3 plugs every 120 degrees? That setup works fine, is used on many/most 3 cylinder (in line) snowmobile engines, has been for a long time. Nothing mickey mouse about it either. Some of those engines get pretty exotic, making BIG power.

The only time a cylinder is going to care about a spark is if it contains a compressed air/fuel mixture - and that's only going to happen once every 120 degrees!

RCexl has been producing the 3 cylinder ignition for a while now, I just have never ordered one but looks like you could use a twin cylinder and a single together to get the same thing. ???

Got one of the 3 cylinder ignitions with my last order from RCexl, Will post some pictures later.

There is something different about it, It has 4 wires coming from the hall sensor where the regular ignitions only have 3 wires.

Have no idea right now how it is suppose to hook up, No instructions.

When I figure it out I will have to make and print some.

Hi milton that pick up wire would be three strands for the plug wires and the black is the earth? was wondering why you just bought the ignition on it's own when they hav'nt released the engine yet?.

It looks like it will operate at lower voltages than my fg57 twin ignition

The ignition will work from 4.8 to 7.4 volts.

This ignition is a conversion kit for 3 cylinder engines and RCexl has had them out for 4-5 months, I just never ordered one until i knew what they were for.
