What diameter and pitch prop would be best for a G 38? Engine is in a Zero weighs about 20 lbs.
Thanks,
Fred

Hi Fred-The last G-38 I had was on Twin Beech D18-It seemed to like a 20x8 the best. Lower RPMs than the 18" props and the Zenoah seemed to be happier there. Your mileage may vary of course, but it seemed to work for me.

An 18X10 Zoar is optimal for a G-38 especially on a warbird that needs lots of pitch.

Hi, Fred. I have two 1/4 scale WW1 planes flying on G-38's. The Xoar 20X8 props are a perfect match for them.

fred, i have a dynaflite PT-19 powered by a g38 turning a 20x8. prior to that the engine was in a ziroli corsair (20#er) and i needed more speed so i used a 18x10. it worked well with both.

My Decathalon has a 18x10, and it doesn't want to slow down with it for landing, It is plenty fast and manueverable at 17pounds. and I usually fly it at 1/2-3/4 throttle.

Since there are a lot of experienced guys answering already, would a 20x8 have a slower speed for landing for me?
Thanks and don't mean to hijack this thread.

I generally use a 18x8 if the engine is new and switch over to a 20 once it's broke in abit.

18x8 or 20x8 will help for a slower landing speed.

Thanks, I will try the 18-6 first due to ground clearance.

I would watch the 18x6, might over rev the engine, I like the 20x6 (For a Ziroli 1/4 DR1); 20x8 (1/4.5 Fokker C1, like a two seater DVII) and 1/4 SE5a; 18x10 for Dynaflite PT-19's. I run 18x6 in G-26 powered planes, it's much less an engine than the G-38.  I like 7K rpm or so on the ground, maybe a few hundred more, but 7.5K and higher you should be running more prop. Most of these are Menz or Zoar props. The 18x10's are the MA classics.

Just my free $.05... (inflation)

Whit

Ok I will try a few and see what type of rpm it runs, the 18-10 is at 6700+

I use 16 X 12 with G-38 in a warbird.
I use 18 X 8-14 for G-45 in a warbird
I use 20 X 8-14 for a G-62 in a warbird

I have found these to be the best warbird props.

IMHO the prop must match the engine and airframe and desired flying characteristics. For a 20 lb Zero I would first try a 18x10 then go from there. I suggest you not run below recommentations as there will not be enough load on the engine. Don't go to much load either.

What about muffler as well? I have never been happy with the power of my G38. I have used the 20" props, and now have a 19-8 Xoar. I was thinking of going down to an 18" . I am using the stock muffler. I wonder if that is the problem. Mine is installed in a 1/4 scale Fokker DVII and it only weighs around 19 lbs. Should be plenty, but is quite weak IMO

Hi guys,
Thanks for all the input. I had a 20 x 8 TF power prop on it and it flew it OK. I'm going to try a Xoar 18 X 10. I think that will give me a little more performance.
Thanks,
Fred

You should gain speed at the loss of vertical while keeping similiar rpm when you change dia and pitch from a 20x8 to 18x10 provided these are in the mid of recommended prop range. For warbirds I prefer a bit more pitch and have had success increasing pitch at the loss of rpm. IMHO it is best to actually fly to test what works for you.
