Here is an old pic from Buffalo NY.

These P-40s are under construction in 1941.

In the back ground there are some that look to be painted with a metallic blue paint.

What kind of paint is this or is it some kind of masking film?

No, the NAVY didn't like water cooled planes at all.

Darn,
I thought the pics would be a pretty 60's paint job!

Maybe the Blue Angel's started with P-40s??? Not! But you gotta admit that is what it kinda looks like.

Back in my old sheet metal days we would spray that same blue color on aluminum so the scribe lines and marks were easier to see, and it cleaned off very easily. This may have been the same idea.

It does look like Dykem Blue layout fluid but the whole plane? To lay out the rivets maybe? Looks neat though, cool photo.

Color shift in the dyes and\or strange lighting in the original. Look at the washed out red in the insignia. You can't really trust old color photos for true shades.

OK,

I can see that the blue may be part of the anodizing process, but how do you explain the fact that the bottoms of the planes are bright yellow? There is also yellow around the rear of the glass in the cockpits of the blue planes and there is a solid yellow rudder on one of the planes in the background. There also appears to be yellow around what appears to be the very front of some cowl's on the left hand side of the picture. I'd sure like to learn more about this picture as well.

David

The blue might be a blue tinted clear coating applied by the Alum. manuf.? (it just hasn't been removed or painted over yet ) It looks like maybe a Wash Primer...? Could be a sprayed on coat of Dykem Blue to help lay out the rivet lines, as stated above...?

The Japanese in the WWII era sometimes used a transparent blue or green "primer" coating...basically just a blue or green tinted clear, or what we might call a "Candy" coat now days. (all a "Candy Apple Red" (or any other Candy color ) is just a tinted clear coat applied over a silver, or gold or other usually metallic base coat...)

Cool picture BTW...haven't seen that one before.

If you see some of the recent pics taken at Boeing factorys, you will see what looks like a clear green coating on the yet to be painted areas of 747's, etc.
