Taking a break on some of my other project and will build the newly released Balsa USA Fokker triplane in 1/3 scale.
Two large boxes arrived containing a plethera of wood sheeting, sticks, etc. Wood quality is good.
Construction time should be between three and four months. I have a G-62 sitting around and will probably use it as it was the engine that was used in the protype.
Haven't figured out who triplane I will model it after but it won't be Von Richthofen's plane as that has been done to death.
Parts are not laser cut but the good old methode of Die "crunching". Most parts need some triming to release them.
The supplied manual is excellent making this a rather simple aircrat to build.

The lower wing is started first. Parts fit was excellent. The next step is to sheet the front part of the wing.....

Project, Dave? Singular?! Don't you mean projects, with a capital S?

I've been waiting to hear about the resurrection of the Vailly 190 and the madness that is the huge F6F!!!

But all that aside, this will be a (relatively) straighforward and fun build.

Keep up the excellent craftsmanship and lightning-fast pace!

Noah

Noah,

I have finished the drawings for the new wing for the 190. The rib profiles were corrupted somehow. I'm putting the F6F on hold and will build the new wing for the 190 this winter after the Triplane is complete. It should be good to go next spring. The 190 did fly very, very well.

Dave N

So many planes, so little time.

Just about finished uip with the lower wing. I doubled up on the outer rib as this is hit first if??? if ever tips up on its side. For the cap strips I grabbed a bundle that I thought was correct but wasn't Turned out I used 3/8 wide insread of 1/4". Always measure first!

And next is the mid wing

And some more progress...

Finished the mid wing, stab, elevators and rudder. As with all Balsa USA kits very straight forword construction.

Haven't posted for awhile due to a faulty camera. As that has been resolved here is the completed top wing. Still much more to go.

What servos are being used on this plane? Maybe a couple on the rudder?

I should update this more

Anyway, just about done. Still need to add a few details to the fuselage and order out the proper serial number. The one that came from Blasa USA was for Luthor's plane.
Weather should be good so I'm planning to maiden it this Sunday.

Helcat56,

I can't seem to find a photo of Paul Baumer triplane with that style of cross AND the black wingtips too. He had the wide straight style, when he had black wingtips.
with that style of cross, he should also have crosses on the top of the bottom wing too. Jasta 2 Boelke, right?
I think I am doing the late style cross with the black wingtips on my next triplane I finish.

Well Rebel, I got a new tripe kit ordered today. Hopefully I will have it ready for Warbirds over the Rockies this fall. Can't wait to fly some WW1 with you again.

If you google Baumers fokker DR 1 you get 100's of drawing and paintings of his planes
some show straight or flaired cross i didnt see any with the cross on the bottom of the top wing
I used the flaired cross
go here
https://www.google.com/search?q=Baumer's+Fokker+Dr.I&hl=en&tbo=u&tbm=isch&source=univ&sa=X&ei=kLzfUKqAG4qa2AWZuIH4Dg&sqi=2&ved=0CEAQsAQ&biw=1366&bih=578#imgrc=_

mine is on line 3 and again on line 29

with any documentation of WW1 you just use the best you can find
fully aware that probably somewhere is a documentation that is contradictory

Here is my documentation I used it shows 4 views I painted it excatly that way

good luck with yours
where did you get your documentation that differs?

Much to my dismay, I visited the GTM website, and it looks like he is pretty much done with everything now. I wish I would have had more money when he was rolling as there were so many things I wanted from him.

Vert...

I will most likely bring the 1/4 scale Dr-1 this year also. I don't think Cal and I will have the half scale GTM done this year, in time for WOTR...

We will be doing Paul Baumer 204/17, but don't know what month, or year. If we pick early (November 1917)DR-1 , it will have 11 crosses on them without black wingtips.
If we do late(April 1918) model, it will have 9 of the thick Balkenkreuze type crosses. I prefer the early crosses, but can't use the black wingtips I like so much.

Osprey Aircraft of the Aces #40
Fokker DRI Aces of WWI has 4 or 5 actual photographs of Paul Baumer's triplane, painted 3 different ways, and several in Jasta 2 group lineups.

Here are a few pics of our GTM DRI project.

That is just crazy getting that big. It sure will be a hit at the fly ins though! You will have to let me fly that thing around for a couple of circuits of the field. I bet it will be a sweet ****cat in the air.
Wow, I was lucky enough to secure a new 1/4 scale GTM cowl for my new triplane. I am going to do the same Von Tutchek scheme on mine. I really like the Baumer scheme as well. I also prefer the Maltese cross, but those tips do make it. The Balken cross will be easier to paint at least. Keep up the hard work, that will be an exciting machine to see when done.
