Actually I was going to start with the guy who has a mercedes C230 (this is the pinto of mercedes) and challenges people to race him. That almost blew my 'what a plank!' chip from the getgo. Seriously, what kind of muppet would you need to be. A 1998 1.6 civic VTi would blow it away.

The rest I cannot prove beyond citing my own knowledge and experience, so would probably just end up offending people and getting offended in return. Suffice it to say I think 99% of German cars are ridiculously overrated, and the Germans have the BMW 3 series to thank for that. Always has been a great car, and as soon as the Americans got their hands on it, suddenly 'German' and 'car' became synonymous with 'great chassis' and 'quality construction', which when added to a reputation for quality that Mercedes earned during the second world war, meant german car makers could do no wrong. Evident by the fact that people lapped up (and subsequently killed themselves in droves) the 80s porsche carrera (to be more precise the first 969s) which were absolutely terrible cars, but nobody wanted to say so for fear of being a 'philistine', because a race driver could make them go really fast without killing himself.

This is a reputation they have been riding for years (particularly mercedes and VW, not so much bmw, but still a bit) and no longer deserve. They're good cars, but not every one is 'great' as so many people seem to want to believe. I guess it helps them justify buying that expensive import. What they really should have done is gone Japanese, but that would make them a 'ricer'.

OK, that'll do...

Disclaimer: I've owned 5 VWs from various models and years, a couple of Audis, driven plenty of BMWs and listened to countless people complain about how crap their mercedes are cos they're always breaking. I'm now on my second Honda in a row and wonder why nobody told me what a world apart Japanese cars really are a lot sooner. I also have a friend who is a Master mechanic for mercedes, he craves a Nissan GTR, not a CLK black.

LB, your glorified beetle is lovely, the GT3 is as pure a car as you'll find, it is included in the 1% that deserve their reputation.
