I'm planing on building a 86" Bearcat from Ziroli this comming winter but I want to change it to the Rare Bear 2009 version

Any know where I can find the changes made eg. wing clipping, racer canopy etc. so I can make the Rare Bear instead of completing the wings and fuselage for the Bearcat and then do the changes.

I think I saw a list sometime ago but I can't seem to find it anymore

Thx in advance

I've not desided what engine that should go into the model but some kind of gas boxer engine is what I've been looking at so I can make use of the exchaust on each side of the fuselage

Check your LHS for a book titled "Round Engine Racers." I think the press is Osprey. If you can't find it with the info I gave get back to me as I have a copy.

Taichiro Yamashita has some fantastic scale drawings of the Bear in several different configurations. Should be all you need to build your model. You can see some small samples of his drawings and order them full size at the link below. They are easily worth twice what he charges for them.

Nice Gene

Maybe he could be helpfull with some colour numbers, I'm going to Reno next year for the Air Race 50th anniversary and If I got the colour then I can get my colour tokens approved and then that part of the documentations is complete.

I was there last year as well and got acquainted with serval crewmember from the La Patronas & September Fury Team (same owners as Rare Bear) but I wasn't focused on the details of the Rare Bear due to the fact it was our first trip to the Air Races

Still waiting for the recommended books to arrive so maybe that will spawn some news questions :-)

Hi Gene

Can you ask your friend about the size on the propeller, the normal size for a bearcat is 12ft 10 in, is the propell still that size or is it bigger or smallere

and the size of the spinner would also be nice to know

Thx in advance

P.vest

got some info for you,
the wingspan is 6 feet shorter, 3 feet from each side
the cowling is from a Douglas DC-7, modified to fit the airplane
the canopy is custom made for that airplane..it is not from another plane
the prop is a hamilton standard from an earlier Douglas Skyraider
and the spinner is from an airplane called a "Blackburn Beverley"..

From all my photos I have of Rare Bear I have come up with these facts.
As above from gblas777
plus
The Skyraider prop is 13' 10 3/4" in Dia.
The spinner is 32" so for the Ziroli it should be about 6 5/8"
You will have to change down thrust from -4 degrees to 0 degrees.
Wing and stab incedence should also be zero.
The DC 7 cowl starts its blend 12" out from the stock Bearcat cowl mount and it is 46" deep overall.

Hope this helps?

Tim

Thx Tim

Every bits and piece helps so your info is noted, it seems that the right scale size propeller is only going to be used for static 34,73" and a 111 ccm engine max 4-blade propeller is 26x10  so there will be a big difference between the 2 propellers :-)

Don't forget to not build the flaps. She is going to land hot I bet. I had always thought about buidling mine as the 'Bear, but after reading about the mayday they had when the throttle stuck I changed my mine. That thing really does sink like a rock!!

There will not be flaps on my Rare Bear :-)

I've decided to split the wing into 3 pieces for easier storage and transport and the same goes with the stabilizers.

Now I'm just waiting for my Kit to arrive and I can start the build

i built the ziroli bearcat many years ago and it is a very easy plane to fly.mine came out at 32lbs..it has a wide speed envelope and you will be suprised how slow a speed it will fly at..landings are a breeze...typical of ziroli's designs

P. Vest,
Chad Veich's recommendation of the Japanese artist Tachi will yield the most scale appearance. His detail and eye for shapes is the best. I would contact him and try to buy his Bearcat drawings as large as he may have drawn them.

I've been in contact with Tachi and I've ordred the 5 view drawing its only in scale 1:48 but its better than nothing.

I'm also in contact with the painter who has paintet RareBear in Reno and he will provide me with the ral codes for the paint.

Status so far is:
all the books recommended has arrived
the Giant Sierra Scale Retracts has arrived
The full Kit from PCK should be sent out today, was delayedd some days due to Sandy should arrive sometime next week
Plans arrived 3 weeks ago and I've made some copys of it, need to draw the changes directly on the plans

Building should be able to start next weekend if everything goes by the book :-)
