Hi Everyone!!!
well I have officially started this project. I have always loved the design of the Devastator from the Crimson skies game and I have seen old threats on RC groups and such on people building this plane but not a scale flying one. So I'm going to step in a take this challenge to build a scale Hughes P21-J MkIII Devastator! But this will be an update to the MKIV. There will be changes in the design to be a little bit more aerodynamic. This is going to be a very slow project but I'll post progress time to time. here is a little teaser of what I have started.

Awesome!!!!!! Feel free to leave positive or negative feedback...constructive criticism is always welcome....

I plan on finishing up the 3 view drawing do some nice renderings and make a cad model on alias studio tools or rhino 3d. Then have a company laser cut the pieces out of wood and start the build.... Plan on having this around 1/5 or 1/4 scale... Haven't thought about a power plant yet any ideas always welcome.

Count me in too! The Devastator is a great project with some unique details. I'm surprised this plane doesn't get modelled more often!

The main thing to keep in mind is to keep it fun and don't rush thinking you need to meet some obituary schedule. Also don't forget there is more than one right way to do a lot of things when building from scratch. So don't forget to scan other builds for ideas and don't be afraid to change something. The best ideas are the ones that worked for someone else and you can see the how it worked. I think a lot of builders subscribe to builds because we learn something from every build we read. Another good source of information are kit manuals, several manufactures post their manuals on line so you can review them. I have bought more than one kit in the past I probably wouldn't have bought because I saw the manual first and fell in love with the kit! I have become addicted to Top Flite for this reason.

Flyer,
Good pointers. I have been lurking on other peoples scratch builds and such. I am in no rush at all to complete this anytime soon. when ever I get free time at work I do more sketches and design changes. Looking at other plans is a plus. Getting ideas for my frame/structure design as well as landing gear and such. I do love top flites aircraft as well I have several. Thanks for the pointers

Here is my revised final design 3 view drawing. Gonna start making a 3D CAD model and then make a mock up of it to see if it will fly and figure out weight and balances as well as design changes.

You might want to cheat a little and try to get the interplane spacing to become equal to or larger than the bigger wing's chord a little more over the wing span. A narrow gap such as this ficticious design has over at least the inner half of the span will tend to produce a lot of drag and not a whole lot of lift.

I'd also suggest that you add a pitch controlling elevator to the fore wing in lieu of the elevators on the upper wing.

Other than that go for it. I still fondly remember playing the first half of Crimson Skies and I still plan on re-loading it on the new computer.

I have pretty much got this models control surfaces planed out. its not going to have flaps but instead the "flaps" on the top wings are going to be speed brakes that split/flare open. The ailerons will be located at the wing ends of the lower wing. The elevator will be located on the inner of the lower wing and will be in sync with the canards. I hope that makes sense...As for the vertical stabilizer i haven't decided to used functional rudders or have the speed brakes on the top wings used as rudders kinda like the B2 bomber has on its wing tips.
