Took a rest from building Team Racers today to run in some engines at the club field at Mannering Park, Lake Macquarie.

First a Mark 3 Oliver Tiger diesel built up from the crankcase.
I have assembled this engine around it and it's backplate. I was given a whole lot of Oliver spares a few years ago
It has new R4 and R6 bearings from ebay.

Many of the bits like the crank, rod and piston are from R250 production. The liner is original OT. The comp screw, is R250

The prop driver is modified CS tiger and the sleeve nut is R250. The cylinder fins are replacement OT, and the Venturi/banjo are Cox 09.

It runs strongly, is rather tight but started first flick.

The second pic shows my 1957 Taipan diesel. It's been rebuilt with a new piston and contra machined from 100 year old cast iron.

Again it's very tight but is running in nicely. It's destined for one of the c/l Aeroflyte designs designed around this engine and sold as kits during the 1960's.

G'day

Pity we don't have "smellavision" so we can smell the diesel fuel.

Anyway, nice pair of engines. Good to see an ABC (all bits collected) engine. Many years ago when I was racing Goodyear using Super Tigre G2015 diesels, I put together an engine from junk bits and pieces. The crankcase and shaft came from Hutton Oddy, and all the other bits from my own spares and junk parts. I still have it and it still runs well. It was made from parts which I had removed from other engines and it was a bit "loose" so it was known as Joe Superloose. We used it for ages in a little rat racer. It was not very powerful but it was deadly reliable and easy to start and won many races.

Cheers

Mike in Dubbo.

I've been playing with an MVVS D7 today.

A mate got it for too much money (he says) and it only came with the pressure venturi. So first test runs produced ready burps but no sustained running.

Home & on the lathe, I made up a 3mm venturi (periferal jetting) for it and what a sweet little motor. I'm going to have trouble giving it back to the owner.

First flick starts and starting to smooth out. I don't think it's had too much running. By the time I had to call stumps it was too dark to get reliable tach readings. But was swinging a Taipan 8X4 with real authority. probably 12- 13K on moderate settings.

Yes, the one on the left.

But the exhaust has been ground down, probably to suit a combat model

Yep!

I've got one of the current version MVVS diesels NIB except I ran a tankful through it.

I might stick it on ebay, it's a bit heavy for my purposes c/w so many other engines.

LoL, that's not NIB anymore then is it!

Fantastic engine, those MVVS's. Their weight is offset by the friendly handling and ability to spin the @*#$ out of small props.

I'm not too sure anymore about the notion of NIB.

I vaguely remember that MECA may have changed their formal definition

The MVVS is ok but nothing spectacular c/w a Fora or a Parra and it's too heavy for my son's c/l vintage combat models.

I'll sell it to you if you make me a good offer.

What can you tell me (if anything) about this older 2.5 cc MVVS? Is it a combat or T/R engine?

My example is a little soft on compression. Do you know if a P&L set for the the current MVVS 2.5 DFS fit?

I have not run it, but will do so shortly.

It was a c/l team racing engine. It wasn't much good for combat because it's RI and the models suit FI. A decent enough engine in it's day.

I don't think it was ever likely to win in F2C but ok in lesser classes.

Ed Needhem on the Barton site has been preparing them for use in British Goodyear. I recently sold Greg's (Greggles47 here) for him on ebay and it went to Ed who has made it run strongly.

There's also one running in our NSW speed limited Diesel Goodyear and it does well, but it's been fixed up.

Greg tells me that the problem with his was the rotary disk.

I guess it depends what you want out of yours.

I don't know about alternate p/l. I'll ask around, the FI MVVS diesel takes a few other brand p/l and this one may as well.

A good engine man would be able to make a new piston and contra and set it up for you. Jon Fletcher may be able to help.

It would probably cost as much as a new Fora Junior though.

Ray.

Two more 2.5cc diesels.

The lefthand one is a Rustler Oliver Tiger which is this weeks project. Yesterday it got a new set of races. It's a strong runner
with an R250 shaft, comp screw and NVA and the rest is Rustler.

It has the modern crankcase which has been modified to accept an exhaust collector ring.

It should get a test run on Wednesday afternoon.

The other is a Nelson 15 diesel. I've fitted an AAC p/l and the latter has been "squeezed" by RayA Racing in the US to help the fit along.

I did ask for a tight fit and that's what it got. It's had about a litre through it on the bench and is just about ready to be hand started.

Next time I'll ask him to make it a little less tight.

Hi there Fiery,

Long time lurker chimes in. I bought the four MVVS variants about 15 years ago whilst living in Germany, FI/RI glow/diesel. I can confirm that the steel liner (diesel) is interchangeable as is the glow abc liner.

I suspect that the Stella/abc liners are also able to be swapped between all versions but have never actually checked.

Well if that's true then the "generic" Rossi mk2 p/l should fit as well. There's a lot more of them around.

Ran the Rustler Olly yesterday.

Oldish fuel (Olly brew 1.4%IPN), so there's maybe more there.

Not too shabby I'd say. Was the engine new?

Is Mr Russell still selling engines? If so a link to a current stock and price list would be much appreciated.

No not a newy, I picked it up a while back, and it currently does service in a Peacemaker.

While it's done a bit of running and the P/C fit could be better, it is a really great handling motor giving consistent starts & tunes over a wide range.

I'm not sure if Ian has new ones available. He is contactable through the Barton CL Forum.

I think he's still selling engines. Can't find a current link to a pricelist anywhere but why not email him direct at:

Slowly getting this old ED 246 Racer Mk III back to form. After initial runs bottom end was inspected. Bearings smooth, no play.

Conrod big end was loose on crankpin, as was little end and piston bosses on gudgeon pin. Big end now has a bronze bush. Top end a 4 mm gudgeon pin. Clearances now in spec.

Disc valve has been skimmed to remove scores on intake side. New pinion made to mount it.

Post rebuild engine now runs very nicely. A willing starter hot ot cold. Piston and liner are original. P&L fit is soft. There is leakdown at tdc. That said, when flicked this old warhorse is still "bouncy", hot or cold.

Shown with white nylon 9 x 6 Tornado and black 8 x 6 Master Airscrew propeller.

David Owen's assistance is appreciated and acknowledged. With his input what was once a shelf ornament is now doing what it designed to do.

I have promised a senior identity a "Blue Pants" for it. I hope I am up to the task. Elevator throw will be conservative.

I ran the MVVS RIRE 2.5 shown in post no. 12 above today.

A new piston, gudgeon pin and rod assembly has been put in it, from a recent specification DFS set. I did not use the DFS sleeve as the porting was different.

The piston/sleeve fit is superb. Pure luck considering I re-used the cylinder sleeve. Starting is first class hot or cold.

However ...

The venturi bore the engine came with is huge and requires pressure feed. I was only able to get the engine to run on suction feed by obtructing the intake.

I will look to see if PARRA venturi inserts are compatible. Hopefully that is the case. If not, where would I get a suitable suction venturi from?

Here is my Taipan 2.5 cc diesel from the late 1950's on the test stand about a year and a half ago. It had not been run since about 1960. I got if for a Christmas present a couple years back. Just needed cleaning up and is in great shape. Jack

Fiery,

I inherited a bunch of miscellaneous venturis. One may fit you MVVS.

What's the diameter where it goes into the c/case, and the bore at present?

I'll have a look in my goodies box.
