I'm enjoying this thread. I too have a partially built kit, given to me by my brother when he found it in a friend's garage. I bought a new set of plans and a spare set of plastic parts for it when I bought a fibreglass cowling. My panel graphics and decals are only so-so, so I think I'll finish it as this version. Nice model, always popular and now seemingly getting more popular.

Chris, If you look at my first post on this thread take note of the photo there,  it's of the same color scheme, correction that's the same plane!  I'm going to replicate it as well.

Update on the resin: It's curing so I went ahead and applied it to the cowl area.

Just saw that, VJ. It'd been a while since I started reading this thread and I usually go to the last page. Good looking ship, the Heuer airplane is petty good looking but everyone models that one so since my decals are bad, I figured another civil scheme and I love red!
Your model is coming along very well, looks great.

Even without an expiration date, polyester resin will tell you when it is going bad. It will thicken a bit and even start to crystalize in the can. Usually, if it is free flowing and is transparent when viewed in a container, it will cure ok. On the other hand the MEKP hardener can go bad quickly, especially in some climates. Always use fresh hardener! I always do a test panel with any unknown resin batch just to be sure it is ok for use. I have also used resin much older than 2 years that acted just like new product.

For odor reasons mostly, I use epoxy resins almost exclusively these days though.

Thats a big spread for shelf life 6 mo -2 yrs depending on where and how you store it? So if that can was packed on April 2012 then it could be expired or it may have a ways to go  You could also try an autobody supply shop for polyester resin since I imagine they sell it at a faster rate so you stand a chance of getting a fresher can. I still like epoxy better just from the point of the oder if nothing else. O.k so I will start the Ryan brotherhood thread and invite anyone who has one, loves one or wants one to join in. I'll be #1 and VJ will be #2   I was on sigs site today looking for some missing parts for the cub I bought and they have Ryan fusalge kits for sale in the discontinued section for $20.00 might not be a bad Idea  http://sigmfg.com/cgi-bin/dpsmart.exe/MainMenuFV5.html?L+Sig+jkws1503

Thanks for heading that up Raptureboy, I would do it but I want to get this project done ASAP.  More time than not I see these type of planes started and not finished for any number of reasons.  My next project/plane I will try epoxy but for now I'm more comfortable with what I have used in the past.  I like the Poly Resin, it hardens the wood well,  it has good self leveling abilities and it sands easily, but I do hate that smell.  Speaking of resin, before I left for work this morning I did what I always do and head down to the workshop and look at what I want to accomplish in the evening as well as inspecting the previous night's work.  The resin hardened nicely and I will give it a light sanding and put on the second final coat this evening.  I will also glass a portion of the elevators tonight to give it strength where the wire joiner is. Pics to follow this evening.

Well, that worked out well. Not. I should have saved it in a bigger size. Lets try this one, very colorful.

Ace sorry I don't I just pulled it off the BING search. It really is a cool paint job, and if I build one of these it would be a serious contender.

No problem VJ thank you for sharing all your work and techniques as it surely is alot of work and slows down your project. I figure this way if people want to discusss other issues or have more general questions about the Ryan then they can  post them in the other thread without bogging yours down. One thing I've enjoyed on this build is how it has stayed on track without too much digression.

The White/Blue/Yellow Ryan is N 48587, ser # 2073, model ST3KR, with a Kinner R5 Series 6 cyl engine built in 1942 by Ryan Aeronautical. It is part of the Historic Aircraft Restoration Museum (HARM) located at the Creve Coeur Airport on the west side of St Louis, MO.

I can’t find the pictures I have but I will try to get out to the airport this weekend and get some more pictures of it. It will be tight as there are a lot of aircraft packed into this hanger (there are 4 hangers that make up the Museum) and I may not be able to get the best angles.

Acerc – The two photos below are ones taken of other planes and the Ryan was there. You can get an idea of the wings paint job (fore ground) from the first picture.

I disagree,  brotherhoods show support for different planes that appeal to different folks....

John, that paint scheme is beautiful!

The picture in post 562 is a Ryan PT-22 (ST3KR) that was modified to look like an STA by moving the fuselage stiffeners from the outside to the inside of the cockpit area, removing the rollover post and hanging a 200 HP Ranger inline on the nose instead of the Kinner R-56 5 cylinder radial ( 165 HP ). Easy way to tell if it's a true STA is the wing LE is straight where as the PT-22 is swept back a few degrees. The mod looks good and the extra ponies up front help since the PT-22 is heavier than the STA.

The wealth of information that one learns from others is humbling at times...

Tonight I applied the second and final coat of resin and I also glassed two small areas on the elevator halves where the wire joiner connects them together.  (The glass wraps around to the other side.)  This additional reinforcement is just added insurance on my part and not found in the instruction manual.  These two areas will get a second coat tomorrow night.  Once blended in with some filler you won't even know it's there.  The ply next to the horizontal stabilizer is the tank platform, which also received a coat of resin.

Note: The small space heater seen on the floor in first photo helps in keeping the correct temp in the workshop to ensure the resin to fully cure.  OK, and keep me warm too...

It's all in the details VJ, knowing you did everything you could to make it right and to fly straight. I'm lucky that I have a nice heated and airconditioned finished basement to work in with an outside entrance. When I start glassing and painting then its out to the heated garage or my family would run me out of town for stinking up the place.  Boy the Ryan thread is really taking off but it's fun and a good way to meet fellow modelers.

Now you know why I couldn't takle the job your doing.....As far as the smell when glassing your family is right for making such a big stink! (no pun intended)  Nobody in my house to complain about the smell .
