On the theme of smell, I gave a second and final coat to the elevator halves this evening, but not before I fabricated the wing flying wire brackets.  I fabricated these brackets from some aluminum sheeting from K&S which is .064 thick.  I wanted to go with this heavier gauge since what was supplied in the kit was less than half the thickness.  I am planning on making these flying wires functional rather than just for show.  Now that they are fabricated I will glass bead them to give them a nice uniform apperance.  I will post a photo of them tomorrow.  I held the brackets up close to where they will be installed to give you an idea of where and how they will function.

I've just this evening picked up a partially built SIG kit from the wife of a former club member. An e-mail went out a few days ago listing a some planes that were for sale and a Ryan STA was among them. Very nice woman showed me her late husbands collection and was very helpful and pleased it was going to a "good home". It looked pretty sound and well built although it has been sitting for a long time and was quite dusty and dirty. The first couple of pictures show it as it arrived at my home. After about a half hour with some Simply Green heavy duty cleaner and Windex it looks pretty good. All of the plastic parts seem to be there and the instruction manual. The plans though were not found. I assume there is a lot of information on the plans that I will need to finish this. Is there a way to get a set of plans from someone? What size wheels does this plane take? It's not listed in the manual.

I guess I'd have to call it a "KBARF" Kit Built - ARF.

Jaybird, nice score on that model.  Looks like it was built with care, I'm sure its builder is glad you saved it...you're right wheel size is not mentioned in the instruction manual but is found on the plans, it's 3-1/2" and the tail wheel is 1-1/2".

Great, thank you very much. Now to get a set of plans so I can see how things are supposed to mount internally and details for the outside.

OK, you guys are wearing me out, send me a PM and I'll get a set to you (my 6th set already).  If I don't finish this plane it's because of all the trips to the printer!  LOL

Here is an ad for plans printing. You could just send him the plans and he can make a file of them and if anyone else needs them then they can just contact him. I'm sending him my plans for my Dynaflite Pt-19 so I can have a set to scratch build from if needed. Price seems good.   http://www.rcuniverse.com/market/item.cfm?itemId=886317

If anyone is giving up plans for copying how about giving to the AMA. Should be around a bit longer.

Nice idea Robert.

Wanted to post a quick picture of the flying wire brackets that I made last night and ran through the glass bead booth, for those that may not be familiar with glass beading, it is similar to sandblasting except instead of using sand you use glass beads made for this purpose.  Sand blasting is too agressive and glass is a more gentle way of cleaning parts.  I have even used Walnut shells for even more delicate blasting....

I have fitted one of the brackets to the wing with epoxy.  Will let that dry and do the otherside in the morning.

They have hundreds of uses from cleaning to frosting glass or plastic....They do use a large volume of air so make sure your compressor will keep up with it.

A 20 gal compressor has trouble keeping up with the little harbor freight GB cabinet. Check the cfm requirements of the cabinet & the cfm output of your compressor.

On bead or glass blasting. I've used walnut shells too, but for really delicate parts, baking soda is the choice of many. It will remove paint, but will not harm or degrade the substrate.

I'm trying to get some ideas on engine choices and mounting. I've gone through this thread and looked at all of the associated images but there are very few that show the cowl off and how the engine and exhasust were mounted. Does anyone have pictures of how either a 60 size two stroke or 90 size four stroke has been mounted?

I'll be getting plans from VJ soon.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Wanted to show how the completed flying wire bracket has turned out before I started on the other side.  I am happy that I went with a heavier gauge than the .030 that was supplied with the kit.

Jaybird, when you get your set of plans you will see that the engine shown is an inverted mounted Enya 60 engine with a tatone muffler.  This may be of help to you.

Go gas or go home  Can't agree more with all the new small bore gas engines it makes no sense to pay 12-18 $ a gal for fuel. I fly 15 min on 10 oz of gas on my 1/5 stearman and my Ryan. My 1/7 P-40 is awesome on the DLE 20 and cleanup when I'm done is a quick little wipe with 1 paper towel around the exhaust area. Loving the brackets VJ very nice work as usual. Are you using the stock wing struts or are you going to WOW us with another example of your amazing technical skills.   I started sanding down the cub I bought and it is amazing how much dust I have, just from 1 wing panel. This kit was framed up 25 yrs ago and was never sanded down so it's like sanding an antique with all the patina this thing has taken on it's going to be a CHORE!  I called SIG to see if I could get the missing strut brackets I needed and sure enough they had them. Very friendly and the girl new just what I needed.

I have a few ideas about the struts Raptureboy, but I have to tell you I'm likeing the way it looks without it so at this point I'm still on the fence with that one.

I have the two top forward wing wires made-up and installed.  I wanted to get a few photos in to show you all how they looked.  Took a bit of time to make and also had to wait for the epoxy to cure.  I took a close up of the bracket so you will be able to see how the bottom flying wires will attatch.  Now I'll start on the top rear flying wires.

Note: All the flying wires are made from 2-56 rod, one end threaded with the other end soldered to the clevis.
