What size gasser does it take to replace a glow 60? 1.20? 20-26cc? How much more does it weigh? Is everyone of the opinion that the model needs noseweight so a gasser with it's larger physical size and additional battery weights are the way to go with the ST?

Status: offline 		Chris, I debated with myself wheather or not to use the flat wires supplied in the kit, but in the end I went with what more appealed to me.  If this were going to be a true "scale" build I would have went with the flatter wire. I literally have hundreds of hours into this build and I probably have the same number of hours of debating and decision making that  went on in my head to get to where I am now... If at a later dater I want to make a more true to scale flying wire I can easily swap them out.

Status: offline 		VJ, I am going to build this same model this Winter. Are you saying that the flying wires are a rigid rod? Not a flexible piece of wire? Is that what the plans
for the kit call for, or is that a modification you made? Just curious. I've been taking notes for my build. I am currently putting together a Black Horse Ryan
Sta ArF. There was a thread on that build, but I think it has stalled. Aframe2

Status: offline 		Airframe2, the plans call for a flat steel wire (about 1/8" wide)  that you would attatch the clevis to.  I substituted this with regular 2-56 steel rod.  My flying wires are fully functional.  I will post a photo later this evening on what was supplied in the kit so you can see.

Status: offline 		Airframe2, the first photo shows the stock flying wire (on bottom), the middle is the same wire turned to show its thickness, while the top wire is the 2-56 rod that I used.  The instructions say that this ( stock ) wire is made of aluminum, but it's not it's steel and can be soldered if you choose.

Status: offline 		The 20cc gassers are about equivelent to a 1.20 FS but a .60 2 stroke is just under 10cc. There are some 15cc gassers out there but the 20 seems to make the most sense all around for planes in the 10-15 lb range for scale flying. I have the DLE 20 in my 11 lb TF P-40 and it flys great at a little less than 3/4 throttle but put the petal to the metal and you have war power baby Them zeros don't what hit them. The weight of my DLE is 30 oz with muffler and ign. I actually had to mount my radio battery at the trailing edge area of the wing to get balance on my ryan, I hung it under the wing bolt plate.

Status: offline 		Raptureboy, I did buy the K&S streamline tubing for the struts and even came up with a neat folding strut to make assembly at the flying field a bit easier, but still undecided at this point if it will go on.... we shall see.

You are right about sniffing the glue though....now what were we talking about and who are you?  AHHHHHHH.  LOL

Status: offline 		This morning I made the last set of flying wire brackets for the trailing edge side of the wing.  Brackets are similar to what I made in the front except they are a different size.   I did not follow the instructions as they would have you make two separate brackets for each side (top and Bottom).  I combined them making one and believe it will be less prone for any type of movement.  I added a 1/4" x 1/2" balsa stock that I epoxied to the adjacent spar to further secure it between the bay.

Status: offline 		Upper flying wires completed, here's how they look.  It occured to me that maybe you would want to see what I use to do my soldering with.  This Ultra Torch works very well for things like clevis' because a propane torch gives off too much heat and an electric soldering gun not enough.  Not very expensive and works super.  Good stocking stuffer from Santa!  Time to work on the lower flying wires but that means I have to assemble the landing gear first.  Not much left build wise, but plenty sanding wise...

Sorry to dissappoint you Robert, but as you can see I'm not scratch building it as it's already built and covered. I also don't have any model gas engine experience or equipment but I do have a 2-stroke 60 and a four stroke 91 looking for a good home. The 91 looks like it will mount up quite nicely and the exhaust can be routed out the bottom of the ABS cowling without any cutting.

Do I have to resign my brotherhood membership?

Spent some time in the workshop getting the landing gear sorted.  Earlier in the build I had made accommodations to alleviate some of the stress placed on the landing gear blocks and beef up the landing gear wire.   Now you can see how it all came together.  I added 3/32" music wire as an additional brace to the rear portion of the gear wire which in the morning will be married together with some braze rod.  All of this will be hidden from view by the spats shown in the plans.  This may just work...

I made it out to Creve Coeur Airport this morning and took about 100 photos of the ST-M (white with blue & yellow trim, posted earlier) with the Ranger engine. A few are below

P1 - Profile of N 48587 (yes that is an AN-2 in the far background)
P2 - No need to seal the gap, the elevator is similar
P3 - Top view of nose paint (de Havilland Dragon Rapide in background)
P4 - Top of wing paint, bottom has a similar paint scheme

Status: offline 		Whew! You guys are pretty serious about this stuff so I wasn't sure.

VJ - I ws thinking of doing something similar to mine. It wouls seem to me that if the gear did flex rearward that it could tear out the underwing bracing or at least bend some brackets. The builder of mine has some large hardwood blocks mounted to the underside of them to mount the spats to, so those might work as an anchor point.

No work on mine today as it was good weather for a change and I spent an hour and half in a C-172 Skyhawk doing take-offs and landings and then a little sightseeing. It was cold but very light winds right down the runway and the air was smooth with a 2900 ft overcast. We then went out to a Christmas tree farm and brought home a nice tree.

I have bought some parts for mine. I have to exchange my spinner though as somehow I measured 2-1/4 when it should be 2-1/2. I drive right by the hobbyshop everyday on the way to work so it will be pretty easy.

Status: offline 		O.K jay, we'll let you play with us.  Actually I had an STA with the 90 FS in it and it flew just fine and sounded good too. I used a flexable lead pipe to the muffler out the bottom of the cowl and had an onboard glow igniter to keep it hot on the idle. If you get a chance to pick up a set of the Robart gear they made for the Ryan, do so they really help with the landing shock.
