If I hadn't just dropped $400 on a Sig Wonder and fuselage parts for my Waco I would snatch that up. A real bargain for sure. My wife has layed down the law NO MORE PLANES UNTIL THE WACO IS REPAIRED.
Hope it goes to a good home and not a kit hoarder.

Status: offline 		I looked for one of these recently, and was not lucky enough to find one. In the end I bought a Black Horse ARF - 92" span. I fitted a Moki 180 inverted FULLY inside the cowl - rotated about 20 degrees clockwise from vertical. This only needed some holes cut in the bottom for the muffler outlets, no other curring involved. Mounted this way it does take a geared starter to get it running, but thats ok.
Flies like a DREAM , and despite having flaps fitted, it lands superbly, easy approaches, without using flaps at all.

Status: online 		You'll be happy to know that I decided on making the struts for this build.  I am making them foldable so by removing one 2-56 bolt I can get the wing on and off without too much effort.  Unlike the flying wires, these struts will be for cosmetic/scale purposes only.  Fabricating them will take me a few days to make and fit...oh well  I guess it's better than sanding.

Hello guys,

I've been reading this thread since its inception, but haven't chimed in as I couldn't possibly compete.

As  jp928 above, I couldn't find a Ryan kit so decided to import an ARF from UK (don't ask how much that cost) with the intention of bashing it into a more scaled airplane.  As stated numerous time, the information here is invaluable.

A few questions for you dear folks;

·        Vincent (or any of you guys), did you ever consider separating the wings at the main gear station?  All pictures I have of full scale STAs indicate wing removal at those points.  I ask because, to me, it seems a safer, more convenient way to carry/store the model during transport.

·        jp928, Did you find a local vendor for the BH STA?

·        raptureboy, how do I join the STA brotherhood?

I saw no reason to split the wing in half since the 72" wingspan is managable to transport.  If your vehicle couldn't accomodate the one piece I suppose a two piece could me made.  In my opinion I have always liked the rigidity of a one piece wing over a two, that is not to say that a two or three piece wing properly built is inferior.  I can recall a few pilots at flying fields that forget to install their wing tube with disastrous results.

Status: online 		I could benefit from some feedback on the mock-up struts that I made.  It's not too late for me to scrap the idea and move on.  The hinge pins will be replaced with 2-56 x 1" bolts, the pins are just for alignment purposes, also the top and bottom of the strut will be filled and rounded off giving a much cleaner appearance.   My intent here was to make a strut that would fold against the fuse by removing the bottom bolt.  Is it  or  (just like the Romans did).  Your input is much appriciated...

Wouldn't want to make things easy on ye I am with Robert on this one. Since the struts are not functional how about making a socket at the fuse end for the strut to slide into and a internal fitting at the wing end for the strut to slide over. When you remove the wing the struts will just slide out for transport and storage. With all the other mods I have seen you pull off this shouldn't be too much of a stretch.

Status: offline 		Wellllll since you asked... I'm not keen on the brackets too much they seem to take away from the the nice work you did on the wires. The ones on my arf are made out of wood and then cut on angles on each end and then simply screwed in to blocks iin the wing and fuselage. They go on and off pretty quickly. I even cheated and attached my fake wires (which are silver elastic) to the top screw on the strut. I guess I vote  But on the up side I like the alum struts and I want to update mine with those when I rehab her.

Status: offline 		I'll try to get a good picture of the struts on the Byron. They attach at the top with screws, and at the wing they use a Robart hinge that allows the strut to fold against the wing. It is a great idea and works very well.

Status: online 		Thanks for all the suggestions and photos as they all have been helpfull for me in redesigning the struts.  The second version will hopefully be better than the first.  You have given me food for thought...   For me this is the most difficult time of a build.  After spending countless hundreds of hours during these past months it is easy for me to get sloppy and not put my best foot forward trying to get to the end.

I would love to get a set of those pics John, and I would be willing to pay you for them and have you burn them to a cd. VJ I hear you on project burn out, I had to take a break from my P-47 build because I was getting frustrated over gear door installation. I decided to do some sanding on my Cub instead and it was actually nice and relaxing,  I know I'm a sick guy

I do sell the pictures for the Ryan on a CD at basically cost (the disk, case and shipping) at $5 since all I have on the Ryan are about 100 pictures.

I also sell pictures of the WACO YMF, QCF, UPF, Cessna 195, Standard J-1, Canadian Jenny and a few others for $10 per CD. The Dehavilland DH-4 Mail Plane is a 6 disk set goes for $50, and has pictures of the only flying DH-4 (world wide) with the original type engine (Liberty V-12), tons of research material. The Waco CDs also have additional Waco material, colour scheme, code breakdown, history and more. The CDs are full of stuff.

I have a little tutorial on making the Data Plate for the engine on your printer, clear mailing labels, aluminum foil and clear paint. It will work for fuselage data plates and other engine plates. All it takes is a good clear image of the plate, a program like MS Paint to change the image if needed and you are good to go.
