Status: online 		When you mentioned you hadn't glued the rear section of the pants together I could see how you were going to get the main wire and brace through the pant. I didn't feel that cutting mine apart was a good option so that's why I made my support clamped on. Still working on the best way to drive the two aileron pushrods and bell cranks on mine. I think two servos as was done on the SE5a I have will work best and maintain the bellcranks and allow individual adjustment.

Status: offline 		Thanks for the kind compliments guys.  Still a lot of work to do, what's ahead of me is how people will judge my model.  They can't see all the time spent on making tight clean joints, it's all covered up, but what they can see is the outside.  So I'm trying to really get things sorted on the final stage of this build, as I said before the best I hope   is yet to come... 

The other day I was wondering about what I was going to call this plane.  After all,  It should have a name,  then it dawned on me as I was looking at a particular photo of what I think the perfect name for this plane should be.  I'll need to get some custom lettering done that I can put on the nose. You'll see the name when the plane is completed.

Status: offline 		Part 5 Wheel Pant/Spat Fabrication
This is the way I attatched the bracket to the landing gear wire.  (The bracket will have the wheel flying wires attatched to them, six in total.)  I saw no need to permanetly solder this bracket to the wire, infact doing it this way accomplishes two things, it makes the bracket install so much easier, and it also allows the bracket to pivot on the wire.  I have taken some photos of the bracket installed on the landing gear wire without the wheel pant obscuring it.  If you note the bracket has four holes on the outboard side while only having two holes on the inboard side for flying wires to attatch to.  

I am now in a slight holding pattern to go any further with the wheel pants, as I have ordered  brackets that will  secure the pants to the landing gear wire.  Last night I received my paint from Klass Kote so I am excited to start to lay down some primer soon... 

Note: Final sizing of the wheel pant opening will be done when the assembly is installed on the wing for a better fit.

Status: offline 		I really like the pivoting idea and how you did the bracket on the wheel pant. Just wondering though, in the 3rd photo above of the part #5 post, it looks like the attaching wires will have a tendency to pull the bracket to the rear. Are you planning on putting a wheel collar or something on the bracket wire to keep in in position so it can only pivot on the wire, and not move?

Status: offline 		It was a concern of mine as well Dave even though I don't think it will move back very much, I can either put a wheel collar on or I can solder a washer on the end if need be.  If I had to do it all over again the best set-up would have been to scrap the pre-bent wire and re-bend another wire the same gage with the threaded end intact so a nut could be used.

Status: online 		Getting excited to see the paint go down. What kind of equipment do you use to spray? Looks like an automotive type spray gun you have there in the picture. As I've never sprayed paint, what kind of nozzle and air pressure do you run for this kind of job?

BTW, missed you Sunday at the field, it was a gorgeous morning.

I am undecided about what paint to use on my Waco. I used latex the 1st time around and it wasn't as shiny as I wanted. I am thinking Klass Kote would break the bank on this big of a bird. I think I would need a qt of primer and a quart each of white and blue. If I remember right I used a quart of each color on the last paint job.
I am also comptemplating using automotive base coat clear coat system.

How bad are the fumes with the Klass Kote? That is one great thing about latex. With the automotive paint I will have to find somewhere else to paint as I do not have a garage.

To answer your questions Tim, the gun that I'm using is a professional automotive spot repair gun made by Sata, Minijet 3000 B.  Its size is just perfect for painting these type of models.  I have the air pressure regulated to 29 psi at the gun by a regulator that you can see on the gun.  It really does a super job and is quite easy to use.  The only drawback to this gun was the price...don't ask.

I would compare the fumes of Klass Kote to that of a two part auto paint.  I have sprayed PPG paint and the Klass Kote is very similar.

The health factor of Klass Kote is much less than that of auto paint but I would still recommend a respirator for all but very minor painting.

Having said that, Klass Kote sprays exceptionally well.  Really great paint and it is what I go to.  The owner of Klass Kote is also excellent.  When I make my first order he called me from his vacation to let me know he was out of town and my order would ship upon his return home, which was only a few days.  Service, for me, counts.

Status: offline 		Anthony Klass Kote paints are a wonderful product and very easy to get to lay down.  The Catalyst  you choose for the color can be in gloss or a satin  finish.  There are some drawbacks to using this paint, one is the cost and the second is the smell.  For a quart of color it's $38.95 and then for the quart of catalyst it's another $36.95.  It cost me $192.65 for all the paint and primer (shipping included) for my project.  You will also need  epoxy reducer.

I will have to think about it. I will also be applying Gold pinstripe to the Waco and the beauty of the base coat clear coat system is you add your pinstripes after the basecoats are down then clear over everything and it seals the stripes.

It is of my opinion that any of the quality, R/C in mind, paint's are well worth the money. I have used Stits, Warbird Colors, and Klass Kote, and they are by far a much better applying and a much better finish than paints such as Latex,  Rustoleum, etc. If one wants a quality finish that is going to last the life of the airframe what's another hundred buck's.  A beautiful, long lasting, impressive finish, that  is what the extra $100 gets you.

Status: online 		My friend Austin is probably the "Scale Master" at our club.  His attention to detail is second to none.  He just finished a Byron Hellcat and used Klass Kote exclusively.  The model is amazing.  He also painted his PT19 and his Jet with Klass Kote.  Here are a few photos. (Hellcat photo was taking on an iPhone, excuse the quality!)

No, I don't work for Klass Kote...  Just really happy with their paint.

In my case it's sometimes measured in minutes  I have used latex wth good success and since I am a warbird fan the flat finish is mostly what I use. Behr premium exterior from Home Depot is great and you can buy it in the 4oz sample can for $4. Not for everyone though or every situation but it works for me and requires no special equipment to spray. Vj you must be drooling on yourself by now It could be 50* here by Sunday. Time to charge the Ryan up!

Status: offline 		Well, I'm still waiting to receive the wheel pants brackets in the mail so I decided to divert my attention back to the fuselage instead of being idle.  A fairly heavy coat of primer has been applied to the fuse and after drying every minute flaw became apparent in the surface which wasn't unexpected.  So now is the time to apply spot putty and fill the voids and imperfections to make the surface as perfect as I can.
