Jeff, don't know yet. Probably a take on the Blue Angels, just love them. Maybe switch the blue up to some pearl or something similar. Have a lot to do for others so this one will be on the back burner for a while I suppose...

Status: offline 		YS has no current 61 production - side or rear. The latter is supposed to change soon...

Jett does have a RE 90 as well as a 100 or 120 I believe. Better suited to the EU.

Novarossi and MVVS are the only current production RE 61's that I'm aware of. Although not current production, it is also possible to obtain new OPS gold head RE engines - 1980's production stock.

Hey Dan,

David’s got it pretty well summed up as far as Big Block RE engines that are in production as of today, just no Jett 120 anymore.

 

I’d have to say for me there is only one choice for an EU-1A today a Jett 1.00 LX turning a APC 12/8 at around 15,000 on the ground. This based on the size and weight (9.5 -10.5+lbs) these birds come out at when finished.

 

You’ll want all the power you can get with this Bird! Well that again based on the flight performance one is looking for though, all the EU-1A’s I’ve seen powered with even the top 60’s (Rossi, YS, OPS) were underpowered in my book. It’s just a huge plane compared to the other designs of the era.

 

Will be keeping an eye on what you do with the finish.

If anyone is interested I'll convert this thread into a kind of restoration / paint thread. Could use some help from other EU-1A owners out there as I go to keep me straight and true. OK?

Status: offline 		Ok, let's get started here. Just finished a bit of paint work on a King Kat, got that out of the workshop and brought the wing back in.

All in all, the wing isn't in that bad of shape, actually pretty good but does need a bit of work. First off since this is being painted it needs to be glassed. That is tough to do with the ailerons attached. Both ailerons were given some gentle tugs at the existing hinge points revealing a few of them that were a bit soft. The ailerons were cut free from the wing. I removed the remaining hinge portions, a few of them slid right out of the wing and ailerons, so it is worth while for certain. The slots were then filled in and sanded smooth on the wing. The cap strip on the ailerons was sanded to half its' original thickness, re-capped with new balsa and then drilled for Robart hinge points, six in each aileron. The ailerons were then sanded and prepped for glass.

The torque rods were also showing some signs of age and were removed. This wing will have servos for each aileron so the torque rods are of course not needed. The center servo opening was filled in with foam and will be capped with a sheet of balsa.

The top side has its' share of dings and dents and the sheeting needs to be sanded to eliminate some small ridges where the balsa is butted together. The key to a successful paint job is to eliminate all potential problem areas now, before it is glassed. If it's ready for glass, paint shouldn't be too far behind. I'll use some balsarite to take care of the small dents, nice and light and sands very well. After I'm happy with the top I'll flip it over and get to work on the bottom.
