Status: offline 		Thanks roger,i saw that quite some time ago and hav'nt been back till now.Since then i've seen a lot of you tube vids in particular supermontana mike's who has this engine in an aeroworks? supercub.Very educational.Just looking for some varied feedback from those who are flying them and what they are flying them in as well.Also any maintainance issues they may have had.Cheers and thanks again mate.

Good day Old Fart, or is it evening in your part of the world? Just thought you would be interested in this info. There is a person named Kwik from Norway who has been having problems with the FG-57 ignition system, he is on his 3rd ignition systems in 40+ flights. He usually posts in the ESM 50cc Corsair thread.

Status: offline 		I need help. URGENTLY!! Because I was hoping on putting this ignition into my Corsair right NOW, and go flying tomorrow.

But;

On the picture below; I believe this is the plug for connection to power. It is a new kind of plug to me, so I will have to replace it.

And I believe the green one is ground to be fastened on the engine.

Now, here is the problem;

I removed some of the isolation to see the wires; A white and a red. I expected the red to be pluss, and the white to be minus ( Someone needs to go back to school was my first though; Why is ground white?)

I ohm'ed the wires towards the green, just to check whether ground in the plug was common to ground on the green.

And what did I discover; The RED is connected to the green ( ! )

That tells me that WHITE is pluss, and RED is minus ! Arrrghhh ! What do you think???

NO!!!!

I just looked at my FG 20, the plug end in your photo is identical to the one which plugs into my Hall Effect sensor, so I can run the sensor to the ignition if it's in the fuse, without having to try and fit the huge sensor through the fire wall.

The only difference is the wires on mine are black and white do you have the original large round sensor, or the new thin blade one?
Can you post a couple more photos?

And the Green is the earth wire, just find a small screw on the motor and screw it on, it will save the ignition from frying or shorting out if the plug or plugs come loose and contact is lost.

So, what you are saying is that the plug here is to Hall Sensor;

(It is not a standard Futaba plug. It is bigger.)

Yes, red / white snap connector should fit straight into the hall effect sensor, and yes the Futaba/Hytec/...etc, plug, just needs a battery, mine in 4.8v-6v, but the new one looks like it will take up to 8V, don't go overboard, I'd look at around 7.2v, nominal amount and allow for the overcharge spike, othervise you'll be looking for a new ignition system. I use a Sanyo 4.8V sub "C" nicad receiver pack and it lasts me all afternoon and is still about 1/2 full, you however are running 2 sparks and the engine is bigger and the unit is slightly different to mine...

MAke sure the plugs are full in, and tight but not over tight, the plug caps are on tight and the locking pin is seated and clamped, prime the engine, open 1/4 throttle, and give it a good flick so the prop passes the sensor going very quickly, I hand start mine and it does kick back sometimes so be very careful, (It happens when I prime the engine and forget to open the needle valve), I have the needle set at 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 open (max) ran the engine in at 1 3/4 to 2 Max, very oily and sooty, took 3 litres of fuel to run i tin.

Status: offline 		Here is the 'New' ignition system, as used in the FG-21, it looks like they have sent you a mixed ignition, one set up for the older style, without the tacho feed. the red should be power supply, the hall effect sensor should go to the green earth side of the box, there are only 2 input wires, the hall effect sensor has 3 wires, I think you need to check them out to see which wires are active.

Status: offline 		But ya33 ; Your drawing looks like the the old RcExcl style ignition I am replacing now.

The old RcExl style has 3 futaba plugs.

This ignition is different. Look at the pictures I have included above.

The plug you say shall go to Hall switch cannot do so at the moment. Because it is a non-futaba plug.

So as I understand you, I must replace the plug with only two wires (White-red) with a futaba style connector, and
plug it into Hall detector.

I just tried it on the plane, swinging a small magnet in front of the Hall detector. It is completely dead.
No flying tomorrow.

I was afraid of that, the ignition box is the same as mine, Green earth, snap clip to hall effect sensor, and black, futaba power supply

The sensor you have is for the older (Newer?) style of ignition. the sensor is N/S sensitive so the wires may need to be swapped over, it appears that you need a new sensor now for the new ignition

About the older RcExcl ignitions;
I have 3 of the old RcExl ignitions here ( Which I bought from Octopus RC);
( I have been very careful using a regulator on these, but it didnt help)

One isnt working at all, one is working on one plug, but you can hardly see the spark.
The 3'rd is in my XYZ 53 but it only runs after 10 seconds on a starter. (Probably very weak sparks, or perhaps running on just one cylinder)

So I took the sensor which came with the new ignition, and connected it to one of the old RcExl boxes.

Then used a magnet, and the old ignition is sparking on one cylinder.

Then I disconnected one by one wire to the hall detector. No matter wich wire I disconnected, it stops working.

So the old RcExl needs all 3 wires connected.

Back to the new box;

The new box has only two wires; white and red. When I connect them to the sensor (wich has 3 wires,and works on the old ignition) , it is no joy.



And, the new box is missing tachometer output, wich is sorely missed!!!

One of the wires on the sensor is likely ground. It likely was grounded back through your old ignition.

You also have a ground on the new ignition. If you can figure out which hall lead is ground, tie it to a case ground.

This is what I'd do but I'd hate to see you blow the sensor or ignition based on my suggestion so be careful. Those halls are sensitive.

Status: offline 		Folks, this is the second ignition from Advantage Hobby.

The first one that came with the engine, I run 2S Life directly on an ignition that said 5V to 6V.

Therefore I cannot complain. It lasted a year or so. One year with happy flying.

So this is the second one from Advantage Hobby. But with the wrong sensor, so I havent
tested it yet. It is very different from the first one.

So all in all, the FG57 has worked very well for me, but I used to high voltage on the first ignition.

(This is not regarding Saito, really, but RcExl.)

About the RcExl ignitions from OctopusRc;

You remember the video about Sist Fw 190 D9 and the XYZ 53cc didnt get as much power
as expected?

Well; One of the experiments I did today, was testing the RcExl ignition used on the XYZ 53cc
on the Saito FG-57 instead. And you know what? The Saito started, but I got only 4700 rpm max,
instead of the usual 6500 rpm. ( !! ) Interesting!

It means that I will probably get more power from the XYZ as soon as I find another ignition for it.
