I see that the FG57 prop hubs on Horizon's site make no mention of which ignition system they are compatble with.

That is an EPIC FAIL!

quote:

ORIGINAL: w8ye

Why they are compatible with the Saito ignition which ever one that happens to be. Is there any other brand?

Some of the Saito FG57 were supplied W/RCEXEL hall triggered ignitions & have the prop hub indexed for those.

Even W/all the proper new "Saito" ignition components, someone trying to replace an early RCEXEL hall triggered OEM Saito ignition W/the new inductive triggered system will experience problems like kwik has.

He has employed a "borrowed" inductive trigger W/his system & it runs albeit only @ high RPMs, probably suffering detonation, due to the doubled up 28* advance (56* total) of the RCEXEL timed magnet hub in combination W/the inductive trigger system.

The 28* built in intial advance of the RCEXEL timed hub combined W/the 28* advance in the inductive triggerd system is resulting in 28* advance @ static & 56* after start up.

Saito should @ least note that their new FG57 prop hubs are timed for the inductive triggers systems & the prop hubs are not compatable W/the old hall triggered systems & vice versa.

IF the hubs are not "indexed" via a locating pin, but merely a tapered collet, they should inform buyers that if they are replacing a hall triggered system W/an inductive triggered system, that they need to retime the hub magnet 28* retarded from the original setting.

The replacement hubs should come with two indexing holes for the locating pin depending on which ignition you  are using?

That would be logical & might well be the case, but Saito still needs to let the people that buy replacement ignitions & for that matter hubs know that a change was made.

One thing that bothers me, and which held me back on a plan of buying a new FG-57, while waiting
for this one to be in shape again, is;

What ignition would a new one, bought today have? Old ignitions? Or upgraded?

That's a good question. The new phased 3 cylinder ignitions for the FA84R3 look to be RCXEL units so maybe your original hall triggered unit was the "new" type.

If you ever need a replacemend module for one of those type systems, you can get a twin module from C&H for about $100 & that will be compatable W/the hall sensor from the Saito system. It even comes W/the Futaba "J" connector. Plain Hall sensors are about $12.50.

So C&H still exist? I was of the impression he sold the stuff to RcExl and quit.

I am interested in such an ignition for my XYZ 53 cc twin.

I have used up 4 RcExl ignitions on it now, and are getting tired of the problem.
( It was delivered with RcExl originally; It didnt last long)

I think I am seeing the same problems on a Zenoah G-38 now, too.

Zenoah use Falcon, so I might have to switch to Falcon for the G-38.

Do you have a link?

Hello kwik, that was my question when i started the thread,an attempt to garner concesus on ignition and carby problems too. There is a major divergence in opinion from people on this very subject. It's not a lot of fun for the money you pay and the airframe you risk. Thanks to pete bergstrom for coming on board, better late than never and good info.My point is that that is not enough..

Okay. Sendt him a mail regarding the XYZ 53cc twin.

Then we will see!

If he can help, then I have a GT-80, a G-38......we will see!

I will stay away from RcExl if I can, even though I like the tach LCD display a LOT.

You can use a "Y" harness on the Hall Sensor lead for a tach display.

The unit in the video above is the old metal cased unit.

C&H now have smaller, lighter plastic cased modules as seen in THIS POST

CH Ignitions is Adrian. He is very active on the Gas Conversions forum.

Adrian, the ignitions looks good.

On a Saito FG-57 using a standard RcExcl one must remove the ring around the plug cap.
The original directly from Saito is slimmer.

Otherwise there is no way one can get the plug cap in place. It is too tight.

That means one has to solder a wire to the screen of the plug cable in order to ground it.

And mount the wire to some screw on the engine. Otherwise the spark has nowhere to go.

Saito FG-30 with C&H Ignition's conversion. This guy is a friend of mine, he too got tired
of the problems.....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCiJLDfwntQ

The talking is in Norwegian, but you get the picture, I'm sure.

I think I would have preferred a standard Walbro carburator for the FG-57, on top of the engine.....

The Saito is used in the ESM Hurricane here; ( Yes, we do like Saito's. )

The engine is easy to start and it can runs at idle forever and the throttleresponse is excellent. Love this engine but unfortunately a bit price when I had to throw away both ignition and carb on a brand new engine :-(

I will make a new video with startup and a flight with my Hurry so all can see that the FG30 works well when converted. I really do not know why Saito use ignition and carbs that is so unreliable.

I also had a Saito FG20, same problems. bad throttleresponse, spittering on full throttle and quitted all the time. I sold it as a broken engine at 150$ before it made me so mad that almost threw it in the deep woods... that was before CH Ignition by Adrian saved my day!!

Hey Adrian, on the DEAN plug connectors, ther's no quantity.

Are they $2.50 for 1 set (pair) of M/F connectors?

I like them better on the HALL leads than the Futaba & will probably convert the 2 systems that I have W/futaba. to DEAN.

I was wondering how much your Hurricane weighs. The FG30 seems to have plenty of power to pull it.

I'm planning on using a Saiti FA200Ti W/C&H ignition on 15% glow fuel to power an 83" Brian Taylor Mk II Spitfire.

The FA200Ti on EI/glow fuel should put out about the same or slightly more power as the FG30. The BT Spitfire should come in about 15#.

Webpage looks really good, Adrian. A few tweaks and it will be good to go.

We have had a rash of failed RCEXL ignitions this year and I have notified the guys that your ignitions are now available for purchase.

Keep up the good work.
