I have a 110" wing span Cub, it weights 18 lb. right not it has a 26cc Homelite in it but you have to fly it wide open. It looks like it is struggling until it picks up a little speed witch is not much. What would be a good gas engine in cc? I have a 30cc, a 38cc, and a 40cc to pick from but am leaning to the 40cc.
Thanks

What size prop are u using? It should be adequate unless u are not aiming for flying scale.

Cubs are not by any stretch of one's imagination fast flying planes and if your models flies a bit on the slow side then quite possibly it's flying at scale speed. If however you want to add a bit of umph up front and the 38cc engine that is available is a good quality engine and in good running condition then it should be more than adequate for your needs versus the converted Homelite engine you are currently using.

Its not such a matter of the size of the engine you use but the performance level of the engine. A strong 26 - 30 cc engine (such as a Zenoah 26 or DLE 30) should jerk an 18 pound CUB around like a rag doll .... not 3D performance by any means, but very good performance that is much stronger than what would be considered scale. Your Homelite must be lacking in performance for its size so I would suggest running the remaining engines you have and use the strongest one that still fits in the cowl without adding unnecessary weight.

I have a 1/4 scale super cub that weighs 19.5 lbs and I run a JC 28cc gas turning a Zoar 18x8 and I tow 8 lb gilders with it. Get away from the converted engines, I went that route with a ryobi. Todays gas engines are lighter, more powerful and idle better than any converted weedwacker/chainsaw engine.

I was very recently AMAZED at what a DLE30 can do with a 17lb fabric covered clipped wing CUB! I would never have thought that possible on something that heavy. 14-15lbs, maybe, but not 17!

The prop size that I have tried are 18 X 6 XOAR and a 16 X 8 Master Airscrew flew the same with both. The 40cc is a SPE 40cc engine that weights about 1/2 lb. less than the Homelite I also have a SV 26cc that might be better because of the size of the prop, 40cc = 20" prop verse a
26cc = 18" prop. Need more power and lighter weight motor.
Thanks

Also the RPMs are with the 18 X 6 was 6900 rpm and the 16 X 8 went to 7400 rpm maybe I'm expecting to much from this plane, I was looking at the Aero Works Cub and it has a 110" wing weights 19lb. to 20lb. and thay suggest a 50cc to 55cc engine.
Thanks

I get with my Saito 1.8 4 stroke (30cc) over 10,000 rpm with an 18x6 master airscrew prop.... Sounds like somethng is wrong with you Homelite.

The SV26 is not known as very powerful engine but you did mention having access to a 38cc engine, what make is it or is it an engine converted for RC use.

The 38cc engine is a new old stock Zenoah G-38 with flywheel it's a good engine but I'm saving it for my ESM LA-7 (if I ever build it had about 2 years) also the G-38 weights more than the engine thats on the plane now whitch is bad I need to lose some weight in frount or add about a lb. in the tail. Still looking at the SPE 40cc or the 30cc the 40cc is lighter than the 26cc. The 30cc is a Homelite conversion been rebuilt and has a lot more power than the 26cc and is lighter (don't know how) sence the 26cc and 30cc is basically the same engine except for the jug and piston.
Thanks

Since you already have the 40cc and if as you say it's lighter than the 26 that you also currently have, just go ahead and use the 40.
