You'll need a correct screw driver. It is not a regular philips one, but a japanese philips. That and some heat should do the trick.

Posi-Drive screwdriver of the correct size and a small propane torch to get some local heat on the head screws.

I borrow the small torch my lady has that she uses to caramelise the topping on dessert puddiings. When she is not looking

I would look for a set of Japanese JIS standard screwdrivers. OS uses the JIS standard and regular screw drivers won't fit the Philips head screws properly.  Now if the screws have buggered up heads or something, then what I do is place the engine in my milling machine with a cutting tool to fit in the hole and mill the heads off the offending screws. Then when I remove the head I can unscrew the remaining screw sticking out slightly above the crankcase top.  I have done that several times already to various engines.  A drill bit may work Ok too, I just didn't like the slight tapered bit of a hole leftover after the head is drilled off.

The two types of scvrew heads that one can encounter: You can see how a regular screwdriver won't fit in the cross slot on the JIS screw head.

JIS screw head

Regular Philips screw head

I have drilled out rusted head screws with a slightly under sized drill bit and find that the last wafer thin vestige tends to twist off just before head contact.

And its rare to find that the shaft of the screw bound into the case so just use some mulit grips to grip, twist and extract or dremel a slot across the shaft and screw out with a flat bladed driver normally.

Cheers.

We got it a # 0 phillips driver filed for a perfect fit, there was one buggered screw, after taking out 3, head was loose and got out the chewed up one no sweat
the Davis Diesel head is now on secured by 3.5mm hex head socket screws
I did heat cycle in the oven twice last night and lots of WWD40 and let it set till today sure that helped too martin

correction screws are 2.5mm
