I don't know what the 52 wil give, but be careful. Using the 12.25x3.75 APC the 0.46 on a Magic will over rev in level flight.

Bill.

I've heard that the magnum xls rev's to hard with an APC 12.25x3.75. So what would be a good substitute for 3d flying

Ben:

With a 46-52 engine the APC 12.25x3.75 is still a very good prop. Just pull the power back in level flight. The 46 FX on my Magic will over rev in level flight, and when it does the plane is going faster than design speed also. So I pull the throttle back.

You can try a 12x4, or even go up to a 12x6 on it, but I don't think you'll find anything that is better over all than the 12.25x3.75 APC. I normally avoid APC props like the plague, but for 3D with this range of engines there's nothing any where nearly so good, in my opinion. And that's why my one place to use APC is on my Magic.

Bill.

They advertise 18,000 rpms with a 9X6 prop on the .52XLS. Perhaps they are not too worried about that engine self-destructing!

What is everyone getting RPM's wise with a 12.25x3.75 prop on this engine?

After 30 oz of break in on 5% fuel,

Omega 15% nitro HELICOPTER - 17% (30% Castor 70% High Viscosity Lube)
Temp = 32 deg F

APC 12.25x3.75 = 12700 peak
Pro Zinger 12x4 = 12800 peak= 12800 peak

2-stroke ABC should be good for that RPM. I can't say the same about a standard glow plug though. Might need a colder plug.

Forgive me if this has been mentioned but I would bet that just like on the TT pro-46 the $13- Tower Muffler would give you 500 rpm on the Magnum...

Just a thought-

James,

It could, but then, quite possibly it couldn't on the 9x6.

Tuned silencers are tuned to a specific RPM range. The Tower muffler is said to give a 1,000-1,200 RPM boost, over the standard OS 783 muffler, on a 10x6 when mounted on a .46FX, but on an 11.5x6, the boost was only about 400.
The 9x6, just the same, could bring the RPM to higher levels, than the muffler is tuned for. So boost could be quite modest.

Besides, the Magnum/ASP/SC/SY engines are already equipped with the extended, high volume silencer, Irvine .53 like design; not the short, low volume OS design. So the boost could be even lower.

You wouldn't know until you try.

I bet it would. In fact, you just remind me to place the order.

Hmm, Tower does not charge shipping cost for standard shipping of the Tower muffler. Shall I say Horray?

....<< 12800 peak .............

Please tell me how you like this engine by now. Also, how would you compare it and it's power to other engines you have owned, perhaps a .46.

I have a brand new Magnum .52 sitting here myself and am eager for any tips or ideas you might have. I have sealed the muffler up good with red RTV silicone, drilled out the little holes in the baffle a bit, and opened up the small hole in the muffler exit about two drill sizes. I should have tached it before and after doing those simple mods to the muffler, but it is too late now.

I haven't tached any other .46 recently other than a 46 LA, so I can't make a good comparison. But here is a thread of interest:

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/OS46_FX_with_11x6/m_1170815/tm.htm

It looks like the Magnum 52 is making about the same power as stock OS 46 FX. With Tower muffler, tuned pipe, or MCP, rpm's increase by up to 1000. I will see what the Tower muffler does for the Magnum 52 when I receive it, hopefully tomorrow.

Your Javelin look cools. And your photo is sharp. Wonder if you could post some video on how your javelin work with the Magnum ?

Why not just take the baffle out of the Mag .52 muffler? Since it already has the extra volume it would then be about the same as the Tower muffler.
