Status: offline 		Oops, you guys are right. I don't think there is a slit, just a bell that the low speed needle sits into.

Surely one thing that could have happened, maybe at the factory, is that someone screwed the low speed needle in all the way with the barrel in the open throttle position instead of idle position, and then tried to close the throttle, forcing the low speed needle too far into the spray bar. That sure would bend or bell shape the spray bar out of shape.

The Magnum carb on these engines does seem a little quirky though. For example most guys are running the low speed needle darn near closed it seems. They sure do put out nice power though!

Just looked at the one I ran today. The LS needle end is just barely inside the spraybar at full throttle. The pair in the C-3/10 have about a 1/64" gap, just barely outside the spraybar, again at full throttle.

With this in mind, if your LS needle is much further inside the spray bar to get the idle right, I'd say there is a good possibility it's belled.

That's good information Bill. I took a look at the carb that was performing the worst, and the needle is barely inside of the spraybar at full throttle, but not way inside as I suspected it might be if damaged. I'll check the other, and better, carb when I get that plane down again.

I didn't hear back from Global service on friday. I'm sure I will hear from them monday and will let you know what they officially want to try next..... probably sending me a new spraybar or carb!

Status: offline 		I looked at mine and it has just the tube and not a slit. It show you how close I looked at it the first time.

I know that it does not take much in the way of spreading to get really strange results in running. I had a old O.S. and I opened the end just a bit and had to get new parts. I coukd not see the differance with my eyes, I could feel, what felt like a bur on th eend of the tube. I replaced the tube and needle and all was well.

Ernie, for giggles, look at the low speed needle under magnafying glass and see how smoth the needle is. It would not take a large scratch or dimple to change the mid range mixture.

Status: offline 		Yes, Dru, the origional needle was a bit rough looking on the end. They did send me a new needle that looks good. Still, the bad rich spot continued.

Monday morning I will see what Global wants to do next. We WILL solve this midrange bump!

This is a great little engine.
Ran about 2 tanks of fuel thru it on ground and went to flying.
Low needle was way too rich, it's about one turn out now.
This engine was ticking over at idle like a gas burner......
Hand started every time, never got my electric starter out.
My Webra 50 wouldn't do that, yet.


Setup:
H9 Twist, and it just drags it around.
10% Morgan Omega
Fox RC idle bar
13 X 4W APC prop
Tower Hobbies muffler
No dead sticks except last flight - ran out of fuel.

This engine is awesome for $79!!!!!!!!!!

We where doing waterfalls, hanging, walls, awesome inverted flight spins this engine never even coughed.
I think I will try a APC 12 X 4 next time out, it was getting a little lean if hung in the veritcal position for several minutes.

I will be fitting the carb from my used OS 46FX,
dont need any carb troubles. I will keep you posted

Status: offline 		I ordered a Mag 52 from Quantum based on the reports I read in this thread. This is the first brand new 2 stroke I have dealt with. I put it on a bench, fueled up, etc and cranked it with my starter. It fired, ran a bit and stopped. It didn't want to fire again. I had the HS out 2 1/2 and LS as received (a shade out of the bar at WOT). I used a heat gun to warm the head until it would turn over before applying the starter. The prop kept coming loose so I gave up on the spinner, double nutted. It would start at 1/4 throttle if I got it pretty warm with the gun. It kept flooding. I lowered the tank, then removed the muffler pressure line. I also only ran about a minute at a time at first. I finally got it to run 5 minutes rich but not 4 cycling with muffler pressure line attached to the tank. I have run about 8 ozs thru it. I checked the HS which I had been closing bit by bit and was surprised to find it was only open a little less than 1 turn. The instructions I got with the engine seemed to say it would be a few tank fulls before the HS got below 1 1/2 or so.
I forgot to do a pinch test. I don't think it is lean . It hasn't gotten hot and it still wants to almost stick at TDC but is getting better. Should I proceed and leave the LS until later? Is 1 turn out OK on the HS? I don't want to break it but it won't run richer.
Its been a battle so far, but I seem to be getting there.

Status: offline 		Jack, it may be that your needle settings for the high ends is in line with mine. Mine would not even start at 2 1/2 turnns out. Al I got was raw fuel pouring out of the muffler. I ran mine 3 to 4 clicks on th erich side of a clean 2 stroke sound. I would get a nice clean 2 stroke and then back off the clicks. As it cooled a little it would richen up and I would close the needle a click or two. I had to do this for almost 1/2 gallon of fuel. After I did not have much luck starting it I changed the plug to a Thunder bolt Fs plug. It help keep it running while so rich.

I check temps with my finger on the head, if it burns my finger, it is to hot Just kidding. It does need to get some heat in the engine to break in so don't run it really rich.

Status: offline 		Yes, my engine poured fuel out the muffler when I set the HS at 2 1/2 as directed by the instructions with the engine. I am learning that needle settings vary greatly from engine to engine. I had the same experience with the new YS 63 I got in Mar. I am hopeful the Mag is about set.

I have been running the Magnum 52 for about 6 months on my .46 size Global Freestyle. The 3 piece muffler kept vibrating loose, causing lose of back pressure, I tried 3 different types of Permatex on the muffler and nothing worked. I finally decided to JB weld the 3 piece muffler together, no problems with the muffler after that

I use the 15% Omega (pink stuff) and the APC 12.25x3.75 prop.
My tach says 2,200 at idle and 10,800 at WOT, does this sound right? I flys ok, but the manuel says it can go up to 15,000 rpm's

What type of Glow plug is best for this engine, I'm running the Hanger9 Super Plugs.

Your plug and prop sound fine. the 52 will pull more prop if you want it. If the plane will pull out of a hover nicely you don't need anything more, though.

If you just want to play, drop it to a 12x4 or 12x6, maybe an 11x8. As you go up in pitch you are going to lower the static thrust, in other words how well it pulls from a hover, but you will be raising the top speed.

Does a 3-bladed prop have any advantages over a 2 bladed one?
