Beautiful sound! What size prop is that? I assume it's a 2-blade.

Guy's

I have a scale question. With is the dihedile of a FS P-51, and what is the dihedile of the TF 1/5 P51?

Anyone know?

Chris923

Full size is 10 degrees TF 1/5 is 5 degrees, Leroy

Sorry I made the post about expected speed of my plane, there was no intent to start a debate here, This thread is about a TF RTC built, so lets get back to it and take this other stuff some place else, it's only right. Leroy

Leroy I wasn't trying to start a dedate either. I just have a lot of flights on my mustang and I know the speed it flys with most any prop. I was letting you and others know what I have learned over the last 7 years flying Bald Eagle. She has been a great plane and is still my favorite plane in my hanger.

Kelly

Kelly it's pretty easy to get off track with this subject matter and I'm well aware of some of the acomplishnents with this plane, speed being only one of them. It's an amazing plane with alot of history and I hope that alot more of them are built. Flyingchef is building one right now so let's support his build, I think his is going to be heavy from what he's done so far. Leroy

I have to take a stand on the DLE being the standard for the Top Flite P-51. I noticed that AeroWorks uses as standard the D.A. 50. I have a D.A. 60 that is the same size and weight. I don't think there is a Standard in RC. I do know I would rather have some engines more than others. I would not say however that the engine I use is the standard for a certain plane. I don't mean to raise hackles here, but I want good service, dependability and the knowledge that I can send out for a repair and get it back in a week and a half. Do that with a DLE.

Well,I have 2 TF P51's and a H9 P47.All three have Moki's in them and I do big loops and so on.The P51's have Moki 210's and the P47 has a Moki 180,they all fly great. The engines are all enclosed in the cowlings and just the pipes are sticking out.Thes Moki's have a lot of power and run on FAI fuel O nitro. How do you think a Moki 180 would fly the mustang? I've been told it would be marginal at best.

Flyingchef, I'm sorry if anything I did derailed you in any way, this is your thread and what is going on here is not fair or respectful to your build. I have been looking foward to more from you and I hope all is well there. You haven't posted since 9-20 and I for one would like to see you finish your build here. You started out great and I hope you finish up the same way, Reguards, Leroy

I got the tail wheel mount setup and will install the gear doors after fiber-glassing. The tail wheel unit is from Sierra, not sure if it was for a Mustang but does fit nicely and retract in the right direction.

I machined a new engine mount for the 3W70 to fit close to the original setup, 1/4" thick and made from 6061 grade aluminum.

To fit the engine with the pit style muffler I modified the firewall and turned hard dowels to the proper length.

The nose doesn't look right but I assume it is fine for an ARF, I just feel I need to give it a face lift, starting by raising the spinner size to 5.5".
I enlarged a nose view section from a good documentation then cut a top and bottom profile templates, the plan is to make a mold out of the nose and create a cowl to cover most of it to the slanted panel line located on the front of the wind-shield going down to the leading edge of the wing. I might use only a section of it but I'd rather have a complete molded cowl for plan B. Some pink foam and balsa planking was used to fill all needed area then micro/epoxy balloon mix for rough finish, once done all this material will be removed.
The next set is fiber-glassing the fuselage and ad all the details. By the way if anyone interested I have the original canopy, cowl and other stuff I'm not using for a good deal!

Leroy,
Thanks for the note, I am moving forward with this project as you see but have the habit to only post once in a while after some decent progress as been made.

Bruno you do nice work and glad to see you back posting. I have machine shop back ground and I'd love to have a lathe and mill at times to make custom gear and such, great having those skills. Are you having any thoughts about raising the stabalizer 5/8" to scale position or just leave it where it is. Will look foward to more posts, I like your building style

Leroy.

Thanks Rambro. As you can tell I love Stangs and Jugs.Answer to your linkages, what likages
I must say this about glassing though, you "must" be careful not to add too much to the wing loading. These planes are great flyers but adding too much pounds and they are bears to fly.I inherited my first set of Robarts from a guy who[a very good flyer] could not control the plane at low speed. When he cut power to land it just did the dirty deed.I know the WBrds look better when glassed and painted but so many people have trouble.Just my opinion...Tom [couple more pics]

I haven't changed the stab location and just focused on improving the nose look. I don't like much the scoop but will have to do, the plan is not to spend to much time on this plane. I will hold my scale work on other projects (I'm working on a 1/4.5 Jerry Bates Sea Fury as well).
I glued the stab then reassembled the plane, all the alignments are good. The trailing edges are extended with some G10.

Thanks Tom,
I was back flying at the event this year after taking couple of years off, it was a lot of fun to the point that I was fueling my planes one tank after the other. This year I took a KMP Bearcat (OS300 for power) and a CARF Spitfire which-one found a new home in Houston (got to make space for other large projects).
Make it to the event next time I'm sure you'll enjoy!

Bruno my man,

Keep up the good work on the 51. I'm watching with interest. I got that Blue TF P-51B from Sam Pisciotta after he crash landed it and tore it up pretty bad. I've ordered a new wing and completely stripped the fuse for repairs and a complete redo. This is what it's gonna look like when I get done. Maybe you and I can fly some formation like you and Frank at WOTR......................LOL......

Hi Bruno, looking like it's all coming together and looking good. Only reason I asked about the stab. is I seen all the quality gear and canopy stuff so thought you were going to really dress her up. It is really a good looking not so scale mustang that is hard to make look bad no matter what.

I'll be happy to see it when you finish, I really like the plane, Leroy

Ron,
I'll fly formation with you and the Pueblo gang anytime! Warbirds Over Pueblo is one of my favorite, I just hope my schedule will allow me to make it in 2013.
Leroy, I admit that the Top Flite ARF do look good even with the deviation in scale, I probably would had also repositioned the stab if realized the deviation in scale location and admit that I didn't even know about it until you brought this to my attention! I think for a future Mustang scale project I'll get the A or B model from Jerry Bates with the fiber glass fuselage from Vic RC, this combination will really earn to get the scale treatment.

Bruno...........Yeah man, WOP would not be the same without you. Put the dates on your calendar right now.........Labor Day Weekend 2013. It's the same weekend every year. Now that you have an RV, you won't have to pitch a tent....LOL.........I have two GS Top Flite Mustangs. The D flies great and is awaiting Spring. The B is being completely re-kitted. Keep the pics of your build coming. Your a master at your hobby, your builds are fun to watch and learn from.
