I like this guy. If a 12 gauge is not available a 308 will do nicely.

Maybe so but, you only have to do it once. And who is gonna go for medical help and say they were in the process of doing vandalism? HMMM!

That is terrible. That happened to us in RC World in Orlando just prior to the club closure. Vandals will walk in at night with spray paint and write all kinds of graffiti in the walls of the club house and the runway. There was this time where we found feces on top of the tables.
Just incredible for me to think there are such evil minds, destructive, innmorals with nothing better to do with their lives.

Catching them is 1000 times better than hurting them. If it's idiot 17 year old boys, I don't think any of us would want to see them get hospitalized for tearing up some grass and stealing some cameras. Besides if they did, they'd then become the victims weakening the club's position on recovering any of its losses substantially. Disabling a vehicle in a safe way makes a lot of sense, since that helps you catch the perpetrators. Installing a hidden infrared camera would be a big help too since game cameras flash at night. The really cool thing about catching your culprit is that once you do, you have legal recourse to have the pay for all of the damages done in every incident, not just the one you catch them at. Of course, morons like this don't have any money to pay you with, but they do have plenty of time on their hands to mow your grass and build things at the field (ie, community service).

Catch them?  Sue them?  Not hurt idiot 17 year old boys?

You don't hospitalize them if you are a good shot

Seriously, this has to be an ''inside job'', meaning an ex-member, a barred pilot, someone turned down for membership?  They know too much about what rutting does to a field, about the cameras and their locations, how to remotely enter the property, and when to do their antics.
Take pictures and or plaster castings of the tire prints.  Get your officers in a quiet meeting and see who might have reason to do direct damage to your field.
Setting out ANY deterent that causes harm/damage will end you up in an expensive law suit and whether you win lose or draw, the attorney fees will eat your money up.  There might be game wardens, utility surveyers, adjoining livestock that are harmed by spikes.  Granted they shouldn't be out there at night but it all boils down to the ''what if'' scenario.
Put out additional night cameras and don't publicize that effort or location.  You'll catch them on camera and that's all you'll need to go to the police with.  This might be an active member but kids with their Daddy bought 4 wheelers and do donuts anywhere.  They don't specifically target airstrips unless there is some specific vengence in mind.

A lot of things in that post that makes you think... Has the club recently taken some action against any current or previous club members or been less than cordial to anyone else? If so you may have a suspect to compare tire tracks with???

Plane Jim I used to be in security and there are products out right now that will allow you to set up very small cameras. These cameras are used wirelessly and you can put them in a dummy outlet, or anything else that can obscure the camera. That camera, being that its wireless will be tripped via motion and it goes directly to YOUR computer or cell phone. So, at 3 in morning when they come around you will be alerted and know exactly what is going on. These cameras and the whole setup of about a terabyte of hardrive space it comes with is not cheap. Its between 500 and 1000 dollars. So its up to you, but I can voach for it because I used to use them. They even have ones that have night vision. If this sounds to expensive think about the amount you have already put into this and the field being vandilized.

Some times white foam cut to look like parking lot stops  have tubes in them with a wood base so they dont blow away" as the base for the tubes to push on if a tire hits them" walking on them will not do much... Painting them makes them last for years.

Thanks for all the ideas-I stopped by the law substation today to speak with an officer-We are in luck I believe. Several officers spoke to me and several are interested in what we do for fun-I made the offer free flying lessons for any officer that would like to take up RC but we sure needed a eyeball on our field at times. I met the night shift supervisor for our area and he stated he would definitely provide a patrol note to be added to the shift to check our field everynight and he always had wanted to know more about RC and has two boys-I invited for a buddy box lesson this weekend. Maybe if we can give a couple of memberships away and keep our field in a flyable condition-thanks again

Ok rgburril, let's give you some ammo and you can sit out there and put a scope on the driver and maybe his passenger, pull the trigger then spend the rest of your life knowing you KILLED some kid over him doing what young men do all the time.  Is it really worth taking a human life over boys doing donuts in their 4 wheelers?  We're not talking about someone entering your home or threatening your family which I would be the first to pull the trigger given the need to make that choice.  However, I'd like to really know if you think that murdering a minor/young man like that is your only answer?
Plane Jim, you did it right my man!  I bet the law enforcement officer will blue light them and arrest them much to the chagrin of rgburril. A few nights in the cross bar hotel will straighten their butts out about where they go off roading.

Oh for something like that they won't spend even a night in jail. But they will be deposited at mom and dad's house by an officer in the middle of the night with the explanation that they can choose between criminal charges and a record or reimbursing the club for all the damage done. That will be the gift that keeps on giving as they get to see how much fun it is to haul sand out to fill in tire ruts and work part time jobs after school just to send it to a bunch of strangers they owe. If they get caught, it will likely cost them their sports involvement for the semester and possibly a trip or car they were planning to buy. They'll learn their lesson, and if the club leadership is really on its toes, they'll then get to buddy box on the newly repaired field and get a taste of what fun can truly be had there.

That's real some steps in the right direction!

Hope you get some interest from the PD going for model aviation as well. Just can't help wondering tho, if one of the policemen or the officer's boys want more than one buddy box flight each, how will you handle that?

To answer your question lcs, a club can now make every member an Introductory Instructor (Intro Pilot). There is no longer a $5 charge or a limit. Intro Pilots can give all the lessons to non-AMA members that want it. There is a limitation on the time, forget it at the moment, but the one lesson rule does not apply to Intro Pilots.

Now in my early posting, I never really thought of kids/youngsters doing the dirty deeds. My mind was on adults that steal things, such as using a cutting torch to drop a door to a steel container to get a new lawn-tractor.
There were a couple kids close to Jetero that had 4-wheelers. One day I was talking to them and back then I still owned the whole 100 acres, so I said that if they wished to ride the perimeter, that would be fine and I asked them to not ever go on the Jetero facility itself. There was never any problem.

Spinning doughnuts sounds like teenagers to me, but I guess there are some really immature adults in the world too. Stealing the game cameras just makes sense if they saw them flash. That just shows that the OP is dealing with smart idiots.

Yep, another move in the right direction! I hope Jim's club as well as every other club and of course their club members will seek out the info and get busy now!

Things can change!!!!

We just need to whittle on that a little more and before we know it we will be able to promote the hobby with very little to hinder the progress...
