Status: offline 		The gun I use will give a pattern of about four inches down to almost nothing. It has three knobs on it to adjust pattern, fluid and pressure. I've been doing this for so long, I don't need to know what the pressure is because I Can feel it at the spray tip. I make an inital pressure adjustment at the compressor of 40 p.s.i. and go from there. The longer the hose, the less the pressure will be at the gun. That is why it is a good idea to have a small pressure gage mounted at the inlet to the gun. I have that setup on my larger spray guns, but I don't feel it's necessary on the smaller Kobalt gun I use frequently.

In the pics below, it shows the quart capacity cup guns I bought at various times at Sears over the last 45 years. The newest one is an HVLP gun. The other pic shows a cheap small gun I bought from Harbor Freight about 20 years ago and it is good enough for primer.

Status: offline 		The gravity feed gun in the picture at the right (with the plastic cup) in my post above is the Kobalt gun. It has all the adjustments you need for spraying models or if you like, furniture, etc. If you were painting a car, you would need something like that HVLP gun that I have. The Kobalt gun is about $40 and does a good job. No need to go overboard.

Status: offline 		I do have another problem with the Fleet, finding a place to keep it. Between my son and I we have 14 planes but its a good problem to have. I'm sure I will make room for it.

Status: offline 		The gun for $37.96 has the air adjustment on the bottom of the handle, the $54.96 gun has it above the handle, below the fluid lever adjustment. I have the cheaper model, and after seeing the higher priced model, I like mine better because you can adjust the angle of the cup. The other model's cup looks like it is fixed.

I don't see any advantage to the higher priced model.

Status: offline 		Thanks for the info on the sprayer.

I have the new rudder built. I used two pieces of 3”x ¼” for the lower part then I put a piece of 1/4x1/2 along the top and added another 3”x1/4 with the grain running the other way too make the top. This should be strong and with the grain running in different directions it should not warp. Now I need to cut holes to reduce the weight. Does anyone know the rule for spacing the holes? I read someplace that it should be grater then the thickness of the wood.

Status: offline 		Steve, I don't think you have to worry about saving weight by cutting holes. I'd leave it and use 1/16 balsa for simulated ribs.

Status: offline 		That's a good idea. I'll hold off cutting holes until I balance it and if its tail heavy then I can cut holes as needed. I can move on to the N struts now they did not come with the plane.

Careful with that "Lustercoat" We reffer to it as "Lustercrap" at our field. One guy used it on his 1/4 scale cub, sitting in his van on a hot day it ran (yes ran like dripped) and turned brown

About Lustrekote; the only problem I had here in Florida is that it blushed on humid days. (Isn't that all the time?) Also, too much buidup and it will crack.

Status: offline 		Yes I now use house paint (Latex) on all my aircraft: I have been clear coating with "warbird Colors Satin" Its water based and sprays very well

Status: offline 		I don't think you can get clear coat from Warbird anymore. On the web site it has the following;

I am currently experiencing a manufacturing issue which has caused me to be out-of-stock on several key colors, including primer & clear coat. I am working with the manufacturer to fix the problem.

I also read on another forum that they may not be able to supply clear coat in the new formula and most people are using gas now and don't need it.

Status: offline 		Yeah I saw that Hummmm: ALSO I have used "Rustoleum" clear from a rattle can when I re-built and painted some wheel pants on a friends GeeBee. Its gas so there wasn't a problem. I have used Rustoleum on several small projects with very good results.

Status: offline 		Call me really old fashion but I'm sticking with Randophs nirtate and butyrate dopes and color. Since my 1/3 scale Fleet site has been largely erased of photos, I'll start here with some new.

Lower wing with "Get Stencils" roundells and numbers. Covered with Coverite and lots of dope to fill the weave and voila! A huge dollar bill to cover, dope and paint this bird.

So far , about a gallon of thinned clear buty with 1/2 gallon of thinned AN orange/Yellow. Lots of retarder used which is a Godsend.

I had to order a 2nd quart of color and my fears were confirmed when a different batch was pulled and the newer is a shade or so darker. I like the darker but now its more painting.

I opted not to bother my buddy who has an EPA and State Cert. paint booth. Can't really call it a booth as he puts city busses in it as well as FedEX trucks.

Anyway, its all brush work for that scale appearance. Nothing goes more un-noticed than scale brush strokes. tongue in cheek.
