Technology has definitely improved over the last few years in the RC hobby. Between 2.4ghz radios, LiPO batteries and brushless high powered motor systems. A lot of you have seen the big impact as you have been in the hobby for many years, and some of you are just coming into it when the peak of performance is now. So where do you think we will be in the next 5 or so years? What will have improved, if anyhting? Will power systems change, both nitro and electric? Lets hear hypothesis on how the future will affect the RC hobby.

$10 saying traxxas's line up looks almost identical to today's, except maybe with a few more vehicles

as for 5 years from now I doubt much will change as in the past 1-2 years or so not much has changed. If HPI ever gets their 1/8th scale gas engine out things might change a bit, but hey the way they are going it might come out in 5 years seeing it seems to have vanished with no comment from them anymore.

Id really like to see a 1/8 or even 1/10 scale with a weed wacker motor. As syco said, HPI is supposed to give us one at some point.

I run brushless, cus its fast and easy. But I often miss the sound and smell of nitros....and of the KM baja I owned.

But nitros are too much works for me. More time tuning, cleaning ect compared to the runtime.

And 1/5 gassers are too big for most of the areas I run in, and they are not cheap.

Id like to see 1/10 electric 2wd models with mechanical front brakes!!!! That would be huge IMO. 2wd's suck at braking, especially in a corner.

I dont forsee and huge changes in power systems. The ones we have have been around for awhile....and have gotten cheaper.

There have been a few new brands recently. Arrma and ECX. I havent onwed an arrma, but the ECX line thus far seems good, tough, entry level stuff.

Redcat is supposed to have new stuff next month. I dont know if anything will be mind blowing, but I do think it will be all-new stuff and not just remakes of old chassis'

It would be nice to see traxxas build us something really new. I mean, the drag cars are impressive but nothing most RC'ers will pay that kinda money for.

I still wish they would build a crawler. They have all waterproof gear to put in one! Even if they just build a scale chassis and used slash diffs front/rear with a decent amount of supension travel, it could be cool.

Next step: mind controlling the RC. Just plug that bad boy into your noggin, and away you go!

Either that, or someone builds a "Mr. Fusion" fuel source for nitro, ala "Back to the Future".

I'm sure that there will be plenty of new vehicles in 5 years, but I'm very skeptical about how much new technology they will actually utilize...

Interesting question. I REALLY hope that Nitro makes a come-back. During my short time in "the hobby", I've noticed that nitro-heads are FERVENT with their love for the nitro rc class - and I count myself as one of them.

I see this as a market dictated by the manufacturers, and not the users. While I am only one person, I've written to several influential companies explaining my love of nitro vehicles. The typical response I get is "No worries. We have not forgotten nitros." If I can make just one designer walk into a meeting and state "I got an interesting email from a customer explaining his love of nitro", this will help keep ideas on the table - at a minimum. I encourage fellow nitro-heads to allow your voice to be heard as well. ;-)

I would love to see some 4 stroke forced induction motors...

or even some hybrid nitro electric motors....

I really like the current technology, but I don't think the actual chassis are up to the job, I hope 1/10's will be better built with more focus on durability than on handling. This is why I like 8 scale stuff now.

I dont feel that the companies have forgotten nitros.

Its just that there have been many advances in electrics...and thus more new electric models. On the nitro side, little advancement and so less "new" models.

But there are still many many options for someone who wants to buy a nitro model.

I think we hobbiest do decide the direction of the companies to a degree. Not that what we want is what the design...but when we like a design there are suddenly many simillar options of what we like...IE, SCT trucks. Once the first few were out and flying off the shelves, other companies rushed out there own SCT. then came the 4wd SCTs. Then you had the 1/8 and 1/5 sct's.

if someone designed a fuel injected twin cylinder nitro that could have a supercharger or turbocharger added, that'd bring nitro back to the performance front. think about it, a v-twin engine with 2 .12 cylinders would equate to .24, so it's all ready pretty powerful. then throw in the FI which would eliminate tuning and then add the super/turbocharger. you have a nitro that has more power than the strongest 8th scale BL system on 6s that'll cost about $750, while prohibitively expensive, would come down in a couple years to the $350-450 area which is right in line with high end BL systems. now mount that beast in the front of a pan car or tube chassis with a vintage muscle car body and run side exhausts. you have the most bad-ass onroad in years. i dont know about you guys, but i'd have no problem saving up and laying down $800 for that monster. best part is, once the v-twin is figured out, multiplying it shouldnt be too hard. now that's the dream, a 1/8-1/6 scale Lamborghini Aventador with real v-12 in the middle and 4wd. with a mustang of the same scale sitting next to it on a trailer hooked up to an f350 dually that actually runs on diesel.

Well, lots of people (for reasons completely alien to me..) obviously like electric. But I think a real game changer would be an 8th scale gas engine which would be at least as fast as the fast nitros, but with the much lower fuel costs. HPI is apparently working on it. IF it works out, and it isn't a dog, that could really make things interesting..

I use electric as I don't want to annoy neighbours, it is maintainence free and more time driving. Nitro is awesome, theres nothing like a nitro engine screaming but the ongoing costs of fuel ($20 a litre is too much) and less places to run them have stopped me from getting one. Maybe in a few years things might change and I will have one. Back to the original question, I have the feeling Thunder Tiger will take over alot more of the RC market, they own associated, ACE RC, manufacture lots of engines and my lhs guy said that they might buy Tamiya too. Bye Traxxas, Hello Thunder Tiger

Back to subject, with the technology in electronics, I personally would like to see a more ''modular'' radio system. What I mean is, eliminate the receiver! With 2.4 ghz radio systems where you program the receiver to the tx, just program the individual servo's to the tx? Less wiring, more room for bigger batteries or other components! There has to be a way currently to do this! If I weren't electronically challenged, I'd sit down and figure this out!

the problem with that is the gear would become proprietary. no more running hitec servos with your futaba radio. then it would be impossible for companies like tekin to keep profits up because they'd have to make 3 different versions of the same dang ESC. and not to mention, how would you power the servos? no rx, no power. if you power each one with it's own battery, that'd take the same space as an rx to begin with, then the added weight would make it impractical. good idea in theory, bad idea in practice.

they have a 1/8th scale gas engine. I drive the guy now and then. It goes about 60mph with 4wd. Im sure you can buy the engine only. I got a morris mini of this car about 12 years ago. So its not new

In 5 years I see traxxas putting wings, a turbo, and a 4 speed on the tmaxx (no more broken parts if you keep it in the air)
of course you will have to unlock it with your iphone10

All politics removed, thanks, carry on...

By the way, if we ever see the HPI 1/8th gas engine, I'll eat my hat. That little project has been quietly canned I reckon.

New poll: should Foxy have to eat a cowboy hat, a baseball cap, a wool winter toboggan, or what?

My bet is he's gonna' have to eat one of them...

As long as I got ketchup, no problem.

By the way, speaking of the future, I'm just looking forwardt o battery and radio developments to be honest. I want more range and more runtime, as far as everything else (power for example), I got more than I can handle.

I'm also looking forward to Xray's purpose designed electric truggy which we have now been waiting for any further word on since it was announced in early 2010. Since then not a peep. Not even on their own forums, despite loads of people threatening to get Mugen Eco truggies if Xray doesn't say something (including me, lol) soon. So I reckon that's a distant future development.

  • We'll see more "up and coming" brands introduced to the market wanting to make a name for themselves.
  • I don't believe that the mechanics of the vehicles will change much.
  • Brushless systems will become a bit more powerful but in a smaller footprint (for example, 550 sized power from a 540 can).
  • Lipo packs will gain capacity
  • Your new Spektrum transmitter will have a built in music player with a headphone jack and SD card slot.
  • Telemetry will become a more common feature and start to appear on mid-range systems.

Runtime would be a nice improvement. Now if they can do it without increasing weight and cost, that would be even better. But you are right Foxy. With all the motor and power options out there, a car or truck can easily be made to have "too much power".

Maybe it got "quietly canned" like the HPI engine? I mean, really...since 2010?

-Lithium-ion will be more popular.
-Like BKoz559 said, smaller brushless motors with more power.
-To be able to turn your iPhone into a transmitter.
-More info on motor and esc while running will be available.
-The hobby will be more popular.
-Duratrax will go out of business.
-HPI will take Traxxas' place.
-More powerful and smaller servos will be available.
That's my prediction. I really like the idea of Hpi taking over Traxxas!

Dont say I like the idea of HPI taking over traxxas... what possible advantage would that have?

I Would love to see traxxas create a racing line of products, like the way Losi has TLR, HPI has HB.... etc
because we all know they are marketing there products at the moment for rookie to amater users. and im sure a company with there finatial backing could easly do so

Allso i think it would be cool to see some more 1/5 brushless SCT & some more XO-1 style cars to race on a nascar style track
