Just wondering if anyone is currently running a mako IR/w ATRC? The reason I ask is that I would like to add some red leds in my cupola so I can get a visual indication of a hit. I know they just came out with a board called the "Hammerhead"  that comes with 4 leds on it, but I wanted to know if there's another way to splice in some leds into the mako so that the lights shine through the cupola ports and aren't just sticking out the top...trying to go for a more low-profile look...

My son battles a KV-1 with a DB2 board. We wired a HL apple and changed the IR Sensors with the IR Sensor from the Apple that you can purchase with the DB2 board. I mounted the DB2 Apple board in the turret and hard wired the LED's that you would normally mount on the board to the interior of the KV periscopes. It gives a very clean look (especially with the HL Apple which is smaller than normal Apples) and when hit, the pericsopes light up.

The only problem is the LED's can be hard to see in the bright sunlight - but we are in the desert....

If interested, happy to show you how to do it.

This KV-1 in it's stock form with the BD2 battle sensor is the best running tank we have. With it's plastic tracks, it's fast, light and takes on all the Tamiya's.

just a heads up, if your planning on lowering the apple some clubs don't allow those on the battlefield.  It's been a while since it's been discussed but last time it came up a whole
club from florida didn't come up to Danville since all their TBU's were lowered.  I think it's allowed at Danville now but not sure, I've only seen one show up in the last couple months
and that was Willy's that he lowered years ago.

arrrgh...all these silly rules! I hate apples to begin with, but I know it goes with the territory. Well Kevin at mako said he was going to send me a schematic that will allow me to wire in a couple LEDS to the mako board. What I'll probably do is drill a small hole in the center of the cupola ports so that the LEDs sit inside a little above flush from the port so that it will be easy(or as easy as possible) from a ways away. Then I will be able to keep things where their at without getting too complicated...

Yup, I know rules can be a drag,  but in the IR battle world gotta try and keep it a level playing field.  Same goes with painted apples.  What do you do if you have a battleday and half the guys have lowered and painted apples and the other half doesn't?  For the most part people won't get their panties in a bunch, but if your doing competiton style battles it aint gonna cut it.

I think I will just paint the very top of my HL apple as the panzer cupola on my KV-2 covers quite a bit of it, and leave it at that..oh and also peel off the rediculous white sticker they throw on it lol..

The hammerhead can't lower the apple. The hammerhead sits under the Apple which actually increases its height by approximately 1/2", great thing though is if you didn't like this all you need to do is add some extra wire to the hammerhead and you could tuck the main portion inside the turret, its only maybe an 1-1/2' in diameter.
It would be easy to drill holes and put the leds any where using the same idea of just adding a piece of wire the correct length.

changing led color is just a swap out as well.

That was  basically my idea except that I would mount the LED's into the view-ports....

what size led's should I run?...I'm torn between 3mm and 5mm..I really want to be able to see it during the day so I'm leaning towards 5mm...I decided to just run a single  on top of the turret so I figure I should go 5mm if I'm only going to run a single LED..
