Getting my minnie telemaster ready to fly FP 10 (OS) Davis head, throttle open 1/4 and off it screams full tilt it is fiitted with a wood zinger 9x4 throttle open or closed no difference my guess 9K plus, stopped engine by pulling off fuel line to carb, then I saw it one of the carb retaining screws had come out this leaves an opening in the side of the carb and crankcase below the needle almost as large as the venturi, engine did not care plenty of air still pulled fuel from needle assembly,
small miracle, found the screw, the other one was about to leave also, now both in and tight with medium thread locker will retest tomorrow it will throttle now
for a few moments a puzzle could see the barrel rotating open to close and still at WOT this was a first for me martin

I guess this is one reason why nuts and bolts on the full size are generally wired or split pinned for safety.........on the time honoured basis that 'if it can vibrate loose, it will.....and why 'loctite' or its generic derivatives has been a god send to many of us over the years in a variety of model engine applications-my most desperate need being unscrewing cylinders-which distorted if done up real tight.....the 'Elfin disease' if you've experienced it before..........
Actually its amazing what vibration can and does do to models. When I started flying big (2.5-3.5cc and .40) FF open power models in the early 1980s (it was a big jump from 1/2A's!) I was mystified by occasionally finding burn marks on the wing mounts. Eventually it dawned on me that these were friction burns, caused by vibration-even on models that didn't seem overly vibrating...........and given that the engine run was only 10 seconds-that's a lot of friction vibration induced heat in such a short time..........

Chris missed a few clues this engine is any easy starter normally , had open needle 5 turns and lower compression screw to bottom it is usally 1/2-to 3/4 off bottom and needle around 2 turns open quite sure is back to normal now martin

Its always a sign Martin, that when you have to alter anything significantly from the previous norm-that something is amiss......... One of my old mentors was Des McAnelly-now gone to his rest these 10 years past. He was mainly a C/L speed and team race flier-and for many years edited and produced SATRN-'Speed and Team Race News'-and he vowed and declared that if your engine was properly setup and fuelled, you should never need to touch the needle again, except for minor tweaks to account for markedly different weather conditions (hot and dry to cool and moist for example). Mind you, he knew engines inside out, was a fairly handy man with a lathe and hone, and was a foundryman by profession-all desirable attributes in a modeller. Conversely he also opined
-if you had to adjust the needle more than 1/4 turn for any reason-start looking for a problem-blockage, air leak, pin hole, crud in the tank, crankcase leak, carb leak, head leak..........
A pity his children haven't seen fit to keep the engine pans and cast mounts side of the business going-his range of pans was second to none-and there wasn't an engine of note from the 50s 60's 70's and 80s he couldn't provide a pan for. [I visited him once and to see an entire workshop wall lined with master wood patterns for every engine imaginable was an eye opener........]

CHRIS.. dark out now put the plane on the kitchen counter and just a few drops down the carb flipped instant pop and kickback open compression screw to 2 turns
off bottom and right off this is an easy hand flip start we did the devarnish brush trick that Davis suggested and after its wide open scream compression quite high

martin

correction we uses steel wool on piston and cylinder removed varnish and the minorscratched surfaces gave us a good seal from the oil in the fuel
compression was poor before this stunt

Ok up and running wood zinger 9 x4 9200 idle 3400, pulled tank last night and replaced external fuel line which were hard as a rock old age its a Hayes 3 oz inside clunk line fine, flexible can move tank in any position side to side, upside down clunk follows. had issue with the micro servo arm on throttle cracked at small end so slipped no real control replaced arm ,all is well engine kill button OPtic 6 trans does its job at 9200 the plane as a lot of thrust holding on to it we have 3 inch tires for grass ( tundra special) we are running 3/4 turn from bottom om davis head compression thumb screw 3 turns on needed, instant response on throttle
no hesitation up and down from idle, its ready to go after a 5 year storage it has a new 700mili-lamp battery too martin
