My brother just sold his Rustler on ebay for around $120 and has about a $150 budget for something new. He wants it to be durable, name brand, simple as possible, can run pretty decently out of the box, waterproof is possible (probably not), doesn't have to come with a battery, but needs to be under $150. He simply doesn't have anymore money than that so please don't suggest making the budget larger. He would like to be able to race around the driveway with my brushless Exo, but obviously isn't going to be as fast. The models we were considering are (please comment on them, suggest others, etc.):
- ECX Torment
- ECX Ruckus
- Exceed Onroad
- ECX Smash (we would do brushless and lipo out of the box)
- Losi Mini SCT
- Losi XXX-SCT Roller (can get for under $130 or so shipped so that would leave room for electronics down the road)
- Something else?

Thanks.

torment is more like $170-$180

ruckus wont be much different than the rustler.

IMO mini's are never as much fun as 1/10 scale models.

an onroad (brushed) may be quicker than the rustler he had, but not by much.

Sometimes you can find used redcat or exceed brushless models on ebay for sub $150. Ive bought an exceed infinive (same as the redcat volcano 4wd) brushless RTR for $90 shipped. Thats a heck of a truck for that kinda money.

A brushless exceed or redcat onroad can be very fast. And cars tend to hold up better than offroad stuff.

If brand name is a must, but used will do then keep the money for a bit and search ebay daily.

I have bought a RTR brushless rustler for $150 (with the vxl system) before. Those deals dont come around often, but if you have the money in hand when you find them then you can snag them up.

If the rustler got boring, then what is most likely to make him happy? will 4wd be enough? Or is brushless a must?

He can get an Exceed brushless on road car for $170 and I would help him out. And you can get the Torment on eBay for $150 shipped. And now the Ruckus comes with the 2.4ghz system too so it might be fun. I know what your saying about something else 2wd not being anymore fun, but he's never had anything new before and is kinda just sick of having worn out stuff that has been passed down to him or that's all he could afford. He was planning on the Torment but after seeing that the Ruckus comes with 2.4ghz now, I'll let him know about it too.

Sounds like he is nearly asking for the impossible.... deja vu

$150... keep checking auction sites, he might get lucky...

I was luckly enough to sell my rustler for $200 and I picked up a Losi 8ight for $180....

hey what about a 2nd hand Mini Losi 8ight?

ATM there is a "team losi mini 8ight, 8, eight buggy roller!!" for US $76.25 with only 1h 4m 9s left on the auction

thats kinda the case.
for $150 there are certainly options that will be as good as the rustler, but not much more (if buying new)
If willing to buy used and comb threw ebay or RCU for a deal, then you might be able to snag a cool brushless model or something 4wd for that price.

I have had e-converted Ofna CRT .5's' for that kinda money. Thats a fairly tough rig. Can be brushed or brushless. Sometimes you can find rollers for a cheap price.

Watch Cl and Ebay. You could get a running Blitz, Slash, Sc10 or other SCT for that amount used. Finding something new for that price range is going to be tough.

Torments and Ruckus' are currently $149 with the DX2E transmitter.  On Ebay they pop for $149 out the door with shipping included. http://www.ebay.com/itm/ECX-Torment-Short-Course-Truck-2-4GHz-RED-Grey-ECX4100-1-10-scale-/350611469327?pt=Radio_Control_Vehicles&hash=item51a212740f

Otherwise, I suggest keeping an eye peeled for something second hand.

thats a great price. I didnt realize they had actually dropped.
I bought my torment a year o so ago for $159 (pretty much that price everywhere i looked)
but soon after they went up by $10.
Great to see they came down. fro $150 is a really great truck, cant beat the price for the gear it comes with.
its just as tough as the slash, handles better, and looks good. but costs $50 less!

Yeah he is really considering these, but for now he's just gonna hold onto his money I think. Thanks everyone.

The price is good; considering what you get.  The owner of the shop I work at mentioned to me today that he read a notice from Horizon which stated that an updated Ruckus will be released soon.  He must have skimmed through it because his details weren't great but, he thought it said the transmitter is either "updated or upgraded" and the ESC will be water-resistant.  I don't know if that applies to the Torment also but I suspect it would.  I'm sure they'll be available in time for Christmas.

In the meantime, score the current model at a great price.
