I'm looking to purchase a new radio. I've been away from it for a few years and currently have a Futaba 8UAF on 72 mhz. It still operates fine, I just want to upgrade. I've been looking at the 8J and the 7C. Can someone tell me the difference between FASST and FHSS? And am I comparing apples and oranges? $300 is the amount is like to spend. Any advice is appreciated.

They are different implementations of spread soectrum (2.4Ghz) and not compatible with one another. Futaba offers then6J and 8J as a lower cost alternative to their FASST radios.

I just got the Futaba 8J and its a great transmitter. Its not Fasst (its FHSS). Its on sale at TowerHobbies for $279-$40 off and an extra 6 ch receiver. Their membership is $9.99 and it gets you free shipping. So for $240 its a steal. The 7C is nice (also $279 with an extra receiver), but the screen is smaller and receivers are $89 instead of $59. They are both very good transmitters, According to Futaba, they have the same output. The 8J is 8 channels, the 7C is & channels. I am new to the hobby and I debated for a while between the 8J, 7C and the Hitec Eclise 7 pro. I chose Futaba due to their reliability.
I hope this helps.
