Status: offline 		So, there is a limit to a glow engine running 15% fuel with a max displacement of 0.46 cubic inches.  So, it's not just a "46-sized engine"....it's MAX displacement.  The engine will be flying a VERY underpowered/overweight plane.  Something like 8 pounds of plane plus 16 pounds of payload.  It's for a collegiate competition, so don't think I'm some sketchy guy hoping for revenge on anyone.

Any recommendations on where to start looking?  There's no real budget, but "reasonable" is the best limit on cash-flow.

Status: offline 		That was one of my first thoughts.  My other thought was, just because there is no takeoff requirement, a Jett46.  I know they're not optimized for slow, heavy planes....but there is more power.

Status: offline 		The Rossi .45 glow engines are the strongest ones out there. They can run really good with zero nitro glow fuel too.
Of course the Jett .46 is probably the fastest engine around. But I think the Rossi will out do it for torque and pulling power though.

Status: offline 		The group purchasing this engine is a college-level design team.  There would be no need to move it to another plane.  Even if they want to reuse it, the competition always calls for a 46.

Another "tier" is a .61 max.  Any thoughts there?

Status: offline 		The Rossi . 45 does 2.1 hp and 16K max The OS does 1.6 at 16K. Though, more revs usually means more power.

Status: offline 		Well, rated horsepower is about as useful as a poopy-flavored lollipop.  Manufacturers SUCK at maintaining consistency with how they rate rated power.

Status: offline 		Sorry guys, I misread the rules.  They're given a model of engine they're supposed to use.  I think it's a 46AX.

Any idea if a 46AX reacts well to a tuned pipe?

Evolution .46 with OS A3 plug and a discontinued Tower's muffler.

Yeah, I know. Discontinued. Worth looking for though.

My wife would argue about a $1000 budget as being reasonable. I wouldn't tell her that part.

Do you mean an engine similar to the OS 46? There are a lot to choose from if so. The Evo 46 may displace something like .467, or around there anyway.

Ash Creek RC flyer.com we have a club race and we use the World Models Sky Raider with the OS 46ax and the prop that works the best is Master Air Screw 10x7 we have used all kinds and this seems to be the best. 15% is perfect fuel to use.

Status: offline 		My favorite is still the old K&B .48, could always run the pants off my buddies 50SX.

I wonder how well the Tower muffler would work on the .46ax? I bet you could gain some power with a Jett muffler.

Status: online 		If something other than an OS can be used, I wouldn't shun the Thunder Tiger Pro .46 or a Fox .45. If a .60 sized engine can be used, then I would say Fox Eagle IV .60.

Status: offline 		So it has to be the OS 46AX. I have 2 OS 46 FX, one with a tuned pipe.
The pipe will give you more power in a certain rpm range, but also increases fuel consumption, I don't know how important run time and weight will be for you.
Also the prop size will be very critical as well as the fuel type / nitro contend. The pipe makes the engine more touchy, harder to tune. It might be necessary to adjust the needles between flights to get the engine to put out the most power. A rpm meter helps a lot

Status: offline 		To my way of thinking, "they" should have specified a Sanye .46 with the stock muffler. That would have kept the price reasonable and would have provided the contestants with a good engine for future use in other projects. Don't get me wrong. I do love OS engines. Just not their ridiculous prices. You know, Tower Hobbies got their foothold in the business world by providing brand name gear at the lowest possible prices. Who'd a thunk it?

I assume that this is the advanced class which is limited to .46 max size.  Nobrand is mentioned.  An intresting fact is that though the displacement is limited to .46 you can use as many engines as you want. Also you can use a tuned pipe.  Gear reduction is allowed.  How about a helicopter head to help?  A hybrid?  Multiple rotor helicopter?  Seems to be a lot of possibilities.

Since Fox is known for both high power and torque with low nitro fuel (less fuel so smaller tank and weight), and is rather light, I would think that this is the very best engine for this class.  Not sure if the 46 is available (it was previously but not shown on their site. but if it is then it is timed for a pipe.  Fox has been known to report their engines for pipes so the 45 is also a possibity.  Jett has also known to report their engines for the customers requirements.  If you tell Fox or Jett the competiton rules and talk to their engineering department they may be able to custom make the engine.  I do not see any restrictions in the rules on this.  I doubt OS, TT, Magnum, or others would do this, but you never now. l I would call all of the engineering departments of as many companies I could and pick the one that seems easiest to deal with.

 I don't understand the scoring for the cargo weight.  A plane that carries 15 pounds will have a score of 1 over 9, a plane that carries no payload will have a score of 26 but a plane that carries greater than 30 pounds will have a score greater than 26. This and the empty weight score is subtracted from the drop score (which is a negative number if the sand bag is closer than 50 feet from the target, so I guess the low score wins. Whew!  Because of this I am not sure if mutiple engines would be of much asset or not.  It would surely be less reliable, though a centerline twin might help.FPV is used with some type of sighting system is used!  Talk about cool!

Status: offline 		I just ordered a gently-used .46AX from the RCU classified the other day. There are several others...maybe even a NIB one, so take a look.

That said....

I took a long, hard look at both the JETT 46 (which is being discontinued, so it's 'only' $250 now, but you need to call to see if they have any left), and a new (2011) Rossi .46, the R46CR I made a post asking about this engine here in this forum, but nobody replied. It's only $195, fully made in Italy, and pretty sweet looking.

Apparently, it's a completely different beast than the 'high-strung' racing & pattern engines they've been known for for decades. According to Allen Worley @ PlanetHobby:

The .46 is very easy to start typically 1 or two hand flips. Very low o vibration - smooth. Engine’s stable thru flights with no changes throughout maneuvers. Powerful yet low noise
