1/2 inch ply on a 1'' steel angle frame. I use dressmakers pins & hammer them in with a pin hammer.
One or two light taps gets them in. Twist & pull with pliers to remove them. Quick, easy & secure. - John.

Yeh.... if you can't twist and pull or you have driven the pins through into the underlying hardwood board just bend the pin over at a 90 degree and then twist and pull them out that way. Oh yes...throw bent pin in trash can! :>)

I have never used a JIG but I do build "above the board" which means my structures are alway elevated and I rely on a good straight edge and measurements off the flat surface below. This works well for me. Especially when building wings with progressive washout or a wing with only washout on the outer panels and a flat center section.

Round fuselages for me are also built in this manner.

About the only structures I build flat on the board are flat structures like tail feathers and some sub-assemblies.

I have a couple of different building tables but the largest of them is of welded steel construction with a 3/4" MDF top. On top of that is tempered glass and I build directly on the glass itself. Works great because I can simply tack glue directly to the glass and then clean up the glue with a single edge razor blade when I'm done. In those instances where I need to build directly over the plan I simply tape it to the glass and then cut out small sections of the plan where I need to tack glue to the glass. I also utilize 1-2-3 blocks for holding things down, holding them vertical and/or at 90 degrees to some other surface. I've reached the point where I'm not sure I could build without the aid of the blocks any more! They really are very handy. However, great care must be taken when combining glass and heavy steel objects with pointy edges!

I am new to this RC Universe and it is great. I have been an RCer since 1960,  however do to some health problems I have had to lay off for about 6 years. Anyway Johnny is back. I have been enjoying reading many comments by our RC brothers. For those much younger then me I started with an old Ground Base Bramco, 110 inch whip Attenna and push button on the  of telephone wire. Single channel 27 mghurtz, one punch was right rudder, two puches was left rudder quick blip was kick up elevtor or a sequence throttle. The escapement was rubber wound rubber band that moved surfaces. I moved quickly to a Bramco hand held single Channel and on to reeds  and analog propro and then Digital now I guess I will move into 2Mghrtz stuff. I hope no one will laugh if I ask stupid questions from time to time. RC'ers are the greatest bunch of guys. While I was in the USAF I moved around the states a lot and met great guys. I am moving into electrics so I have lots of questions in my head.

Glad to have you back Johnny.

I use a hollow core door supported by a 2X4 frame with a piece of fibre insulation like you use when building a house. It has worked pretty good for several years now but will soon need replacing. Hollow core doors aren't what they used to be, I've actualy put my elbo thru once when I was leaning on it without the fibre insulation on top on it. I'm thinking of going with a steel top and magnets. I think I'm going to order the jig setup from  http://www.airfieldmodels.com/information_source/how_to_articles_for_model_builders/tools/magnetic_building_board/order_magnetic_fixtures.htm , It's a really nice looking setup.

I do like chad, a 32x85 mica counter top bolted to a 1x2 rectangular tube frame to glue and weight down.I use a lot of 10lb sand bags and sts bar stock.

1/4 tempered plate glass. Spray the glass with 3m 77, let is tack off, lay plans down on this. Spray the plans with 3m 77 and lay wax paper on this. Spray the wax paper with 3m 77. Lay out your spars and ribs, they stick and start gluing. This works great for perfect wings. For fuselage depending on how it is built this can work for the first stages of construction.
