Dan, thanks for the one dissenting vote!

I took the Dynathrust prop off my engine. I thought "why go against all the warnings?" I examined the hub closely, and it actually looks just fine to me. But still.........

So today I ran my wood MAS prop again. But I also realized that on a 22" prop my engine is not going to get over 6000 rpm anyway.

I think I will try that Dynathrust, at least long enough to get some audio recordings of a nice, slooooow idle.

Well Tom, it could be that the extra weight of the DT props might be their Achilles' heel, especially the larger diameter sizes. The extra weight swinging that far from the hub will be subject to more centrifigal forces.

However, the perimeter speed of your 22" prop @ 6000 RPM would be quite a bit less than my 18" DT prop spinning in the 8400 RPM range.

22" @ 6000 RPM = 175.46 M/S
18" @ 8400 RPM = 200.98 M/S

If it were me, I would balance the prop & monitor RPM making sure to stay out of the prop arc @ higher RPM levels. If you stay @ 6000 RPM or less I think you will be OK.

My 18 X 8 DT has the tip paint worn off from extensive use & has even been sent across the garage on 1 occasion when my FA180HC backfired @ WOT when I was trying to get it to run on glow ignition. It has a very robust hub BTW.

I have read that APC stopped their prop production in the larger than 18" sizes due to a few unexplained prop failures.
With propeller use, the end user is a large and uncontrollable factor. Hubs get drilled, and get tightened beyond limits. Engine heat makes it to the hub, hangar/ground strikes, just to name a few.

Thanks Pe.

Yup, many times it is "user trouble" that is the root cause of problems.

Hey, Sr. Telemaster just completed a series of horsepower tests on a Saito 180 using a Dynathrust prop. It did not blow apart on him!

So what's with all the doom and gloom about Dynathrust again?

The DynaThrust guy was just a hobbyist. He did not have a factory or anything like one in his basement.

He out sourced all production.

At one point there was a run of props that would loose a blade.

I have some that I've had some 15 years and run occasionally. I never had any trouble with them and like them much better than Zingers.

I was lucky enough to have never had any of the bad batch.

Hey Tom, that very Dynathrust prop was thrown across the garage a while back when I was tryibng to tame the FA180HC on glow ignition. I didn't have the proper locknuts on the prop shaft. When the engine backfired @ WOT, the prop was thrown against the concrete floor, ricocheted off the floor, then the ceiling, hit the wall then fell to the floor. I expected to find a broken or bruised prop.

Not a mark on it! Still spinning @ over 8400 RPM W/O a hic-up.

I got some 30% nitro Car/Buggy fuel today to try in the FA180HC CDI/BBC, so we might up the bar a notch as far as the RPM threshold for an 18X8 Dynatrhrsut prop..

My 18x8 Dynathrust prpp is about the same vintage. At least 14 years old, probably more.

Just thought I would ask... I have been flying Dynathrust 20/6 propellers for just a few months on a Saito 180 on a Great Planes Super Stearman... I love the propeller. I went to look for another couldn't fine any and came across all the negative comments...can you clear up for me the following.

Do they shed blades under normal medium RPM use...my 180 swings the prop at 6K Max. Most of my flying of this scale bird is done at half throttle.
Do they harm the bearings of the engine if they are blade/hub balanced?

Reasons I like the prop:

It is heavy 6oz...and the engine idles like a dream with it...it also bump starts easily because of the weight.
I paint my propellers...chrome and Red to be scale and they look spectacular in the air. The prop takes paint well and is easy to rebalance the blade with paint afterwards.
The shape of the propeller is scale like being rounded on the tips and fat and shaped like a propeller of old...

So I guess my questions are...under my use criteria...is there any problem swinging a DynaThrust propeller?  If there is...is there a company that manufactures a like propeller...?

Thanks for taking time to reply
