Fixed Wing -> Wild Hare 35% Extra 330LX - Building Questions (9/10/2003 2:35:05 AM)

Tom,

Thanks for sending me my new 35% Extra 330LX so quickly. I found the plane to be even more superb than the Giles 202 which I had purchased from you last year. I do have a couple of questions, however.

First, I had planned on drilling 1/16 inch holes through each of the 4 main wing anti-rotation pins just inside the fuse so I could put safety latches on them after installing the wings for each flying session. However, the locations of the two rear pins are underneath some plywood formers effectively preventing me access from using a safety latch on them. I will be able to reach the two front anti-rotation pins to do this which I think would be enough. Did you have latches on the rearward pins on your prototype and if so how did you make it work?

I tried to smoke the canopy with black RIT dye both by heating the solution to 140 degrees after reading various threads in RCU on how to do it but with no success. I even soaked the canopy overnight and it still came out as clear as it went in. Certain thread discussions state that some plastics just won’t stain. I sampled two different spray on transparent model paints on some scrap pieces of the canopy and wasn’t satisfied with the quality and just left my canopy clear. Have you been able to or have you heard of anyone that has been successful in tinting these canopies?

You mention that just one Hitec 5735 servo can be used on a pull-pull arrangement and that this servo had enough torque to make the Extra knife edge loop. Did your prototype use 4.8 or 6.0 volts to power the servos? If you used 6.0 volts do you think the Hitec 5735 would be strong enough on just 4.8 volts? What was your overall receiver/electrical/battery setup?

Finally, I will be installing a DA 100 up front. I believe you used this motor on one of your prototypes. Did you install baffles behind the motor on this plane? If so, how difficult was it to get the cowl on/off with the baffles in place?

Tom, thanks again for your excellent products and support.

As you said, you can't get at the rear pins. I do not use them for retention. The safety pins through the dowels are really just a backup, I figure if two screws both come out and 1 safety pin comes out it just wasn't my day.

I can't answer your question about the rudder servo on 4.8 volts. I suggest you try it, worst that will happen is it won't do a knife edge loop. Upgrade if you feel it is necessary.

I did not use any bafflles with the DA 100, it's square in the center of the cowl inlets and I've had no cooling issues.

Regarding canopies, the material is PETA. I have heard that dyeing any canopy requires a much stronger dye concentration than the instructions on the dye specifies. It seems like I heard 5x the strength will do it. Again I suggest you try it and work your way up with a piece of scrap.
