Hello -

I just ran my Traxxas Nitro Rustler for the first time tonight (breaking in the engine), and a battery exploded inside of my radio/transmitter. I removed the batteies and cleaned up the mess. Can I still use the radio?

I've never had this happen before. I heard a strange noise coming from my radio before I noticed residue at the bottom near the battery cover.

Thank you,

Bjfrankl

Can you post a picture?

I am curious as to how in the world your batteries exploded inside the transmitter. Usually when this happens, its from recharging alkaline batteries. Not a normal situation, I'm curious to see what the inside of the battery tray looks like.

Were you perhaps running your transmitter on 10s lipo?

Agree. Please post a pic (you'll probably want one to send to Traxxas, anyway).. I'm assuming everything was new? Even if you reversed the polarity, I am stumped as to what caused it. Was the transmitter on when it happened? How long after you put the batteries in did it explode? I would not chance trying it again. I'd send the transmitter back to Traxxas and demand a replacement....along with some form of comp.

I purchased 8 rayovac batteries (not rechargeable) and installed them in the transmitter per the manual's instructions. I just purchased the batteries today, and after the first run I heard a strange poof sound from the transmitter. The transmitter still worked, but the low battery light was blinking. I opened the battery lid and noticed a wet residue around a couple of the batteries. I cleaned the battery compartment with a rag and it looks okay now.

I've never had this happen before, and it happened after only the second time I used the radio.

Today was the first time I ran the car, and yes, the transmitter was on when I heard the strange noise.

I guess ruptured would be a better term. It did not explode. But it was loud enough to hear. It looked like only one or two ruptured/leaked. The transmitter looks like new now that i have cleaned it up. There doesn't appear to be any damage.

could have been a defective battery doubt it was the radio itself that caused if

side note I've had LOTS of issues with rayovacs leaking. Looked in a nitro I semi scrapped for parts as I forgot to remove the batteries from the battery compartment all the rayovacs leaked. I've had them leak in my glow warmer too after 2-3 weeks(actually I didn't even get to use half the D's I bought for my warmer as they leaked prior to use, and are stored in a cool dry place right next to energizers...). I've had energizers in another RC longer and they are still good. I'd say out of 20 or so rayovacs I've owned within 2 years(well under their supposed shelf life as stamped on them) 15-18 leaked and corroded stuff where Energizers in the same environment worked perfectly fine with 0 corrosion.
Hell I found energizers in some things that haven't been touched for 8 years stored in a semi damp environment, and they fired on immediately with 0 corrosion. IMO rayovacs are junk, and personally I won't use them ever again after the issues I've had with them (I even had issues with their rechargeables). I've also never had a problem with duracell, and less leaking battery issues even with cheap $1 for 8 chinese batteries that nothing on them is in english.

The radio itself should be fine then, correct? Perhaps i just need to buy a different brand of battery and try again??

yea radio should be fine as long as you got all that stuff out
I'd try energizer or duracell personally

i used to work at a ray-o-vac plant in fennimore wi (maintenance) we have a quality control auditor that said they have had issues with batteries rupturing and leaking. they found the problem to be tooling that was manufactured in china (cheap, you get what you pay for) Ray o vac had moved some of the manufacturing over to china also and it ended up being being more of a problem with quality control and ended up moving it back to the states. i use to use their batteries but no longer do, i've bought their rechargables and they are junk compared to energizer rechargeables

Most of us just expect stuff to happen and don't think anybody owes us anything except a replacement.

Must be a liberal.  Most of us just expect stuff to happen and don't think anybody owes us anything except a replacement.

specially when it wasn't traxxas's issue

these are cheap http://www.hobbypartz.com/77p-recharge-aa-2200-4.html
I have been using these for the past 2 years with no issues, I use them in all radios and a point and shoot camera.
I got tired of buying energizer and duracell batteries.

If that was mine i would call rayovac and let thim know. I absolutely would have my tx checked out just because it looks good does not mean its ok and last never never ever use ray o vac for anything, spend the money get the energizers or the duracells , and if my tx needs repaired ray o vac would get the bill heres the link to contact ray o vac http://www.rayovacindustrial.com/Contact-Us-W17C6.aspx

personally I use a 3s lipo in my power hungry radios
I spent less on the lipo than 2 of those sets would cost

if you already have the charger, then yes.
but I don't want or need a LiPo charger and I'm not sure if the OP is looking for that option

Iv had a "AA" rupture, but it was old and had gotten wet.

Its a bit odd to have a new battery fail. But considering that millions are made, its not impossible for a bad one to sneak threw.

As long as you clean out all the residue left from the battery, the transmitter will be fine.

Thanks to all who replied to my original post. I bought Energizer batteries yesterday, and the transmitter worked flawlessly. I finished the engine break-in process yesterday on my Nitro Rustler.

I must be lucky because I've been using Rayovac batteries for about 4 years with no problems.

hmmmm. I charge my ray-o-vac double AAs that I bought from Walmart at 0.7C, it gets a little hot but never had any problems during charge and usage.
