Status: offline 		Hi, I am a turbine enthusiast here in the UK, having in the past built several homebuilt turbines including the Shreckling FD3/64 (Although it was actually a 67) and several variants of the KJ66. Over the last few years I have been putting my 3D skills to work and recently had the opportunity to sit down and model the WREN 54 (the original) in 3D using 3D Studio Max 2010. It's nearly finished and to date it comprises approx. 450,000 polys. It's nearly finished and all that is left to do is the fuel and gas manifolds etc. Here are some renders for you to enjoy. I will also allow you reproduce them for personal projects such as websites and social media, but I will NOT allow COMMERCIAL REPRODUCTION of any of them!!!

Mike Murphy, MD at Wren UK as seen my work earlier this year and was quite impressed!

Anyway - enjoy the renders they may give some inspiration to builders of the Wren 54 homebuilt engine, and do let me know what you think of my work :-)

Status: offline 		Thanks guys for the compliments. I must admit I probably spend more hours working on a project like this than if I set out and built another engine.

But at the same time working in 3D allows me and you to look at something like this in a whole new way without resorting to cutting an engine to bits.

Status: offline 		Well yes I have rendered them out and many others. Do bear in mind that a decent render with all the diffuse maps etc enabled takes 3 hours or so per frame!

Status: offline 		Steve, well yes the FD3 was a great little motor! I can still remember the first time I ever ran mine back in 1996. I only ran it up to 2.5 lbs thrust that first time but I can still remember THAT SOUND!! :-) With a few refinements I got it up to 7.5 lbs and it ran quite cool. I did however from the outset increase the turbine dia. to 67mm which I think was a large factor in its cool running etc.

Status: offline 		WOW, JetmanUK these are fantastic works of art. I love the detail you have put into these and what a potential visual educational opportunity you have provided for those not yet involved in turbojet engines.

Jet engines have fascinated me since I was a little kid. My dad was an engineer (in the US, that's the kind of job where you design stuff) as well as an aviation mechanic (the US meaning of the job that the UK calls an "engineer" - fixing stuff). He worked for United Airlines at their main aircraft maintenance/overhaul facility in San Francisco. I grew up straining my neck watching all the jets coming in and going out of the airport all the time and every once in a while I'd get to visit the hangars and offices. I think when I was eight years old I was really putting the hard sell on him that we had to design and build miniature jet engines that we could use in a radio controlled airplane. He would try to explain how that was not economically or mechanically feasible for us to do and that I should work really hard in school to become an engineer or pilot so I could play with these things at work some day. How disappointing that sounded at the time! But I took his advice and did in fact get to work with a lot of goodies over the years. And still, some of my biggest grins today are when I get to operate and fly miniature model turbine engines. It' still in living memory of many people alive today that it can be said we had no clue about how to make one of these but we knew we had to make one. Sir Frank Whittle would (and probably was before he died in 1997) be very proud and impressed with these pictures representing the essence of his ideas and at such a small scale that is economical, reliable and efficient enough to be within the reach of the everyday person.

I always thought it was interesting that the turbojet design and engine work of Sir Frank Whittle and the work of Hans van Ohain of Germany was running neck and neck and within weeks of each other and both in massive secrecy.

PS I wanted to add the wikkipedia link to the history of the gas turbine engine. Interesting that the "idea" of a turbine power plant to help us work has been thought about seriously since the 1500's!! And the first "toy" with turbine technology was made in AD 50. I remember learning about this in some design classes back in college but I completely forgot when the math and calculations wiped my brain of imagination later in the class!!!! Cool stuff though.

Wow, I think you’re in the groove now! I’ve never seen such life-like renders or such pure castings either!

Most impressive. I’d love you to do some on our other engines but then it stops being fun and starts to look and feel like work.

Well done. And good to see the interest you’ve stirred up with it. As it’s an old design (free on the website now) it’s seen a few changes since it was first published but if you build it like the plan it still runs and is one of the most famous small engines ever!
