Hi guys,

The head of the gun needs to be 90 degrees to the surface of the model. I usually spray the centre area first then along the camo line last.

I hope this is helpful

Yup! Thanks for the advice ... and keep up the fantastic work!
Greg

Hi Phil.. Outstanding work. The finish looks great.

Before you applied the wash..did you apply a coat of Future Floor Wax to ease the removal of the wash?

Thanks

Trevor

We're these repaints? If so, we're they prepainted in the mould, then striped with a striping agent (like citristrip). How did it work with the live hinging?
Thanks, Jay

The paints I use are gloss or satin finish so the removal of the wash is easy. The wash is applied then removed, I don't let the artist oil paints dry, if they do dry then I use turpentine to remove the excess.

I use a dry cloth to remove the excess not a tissue, for some reason tissues do not remove the excess very well.

The amount of paint I use is minimal so the live hinges are not affected that much, a light rub with the edge of a file usual clears any excess paint but usually it does need doing. I have seen a couple of models that have been painted by professional car painters, I was surprised the model ever got off the ground LOL. When I apply the paint I put on just enough to give a solid colour, if the model is being weathered then you can get away with even less paint, this gives the colour a sun breached look.

Anyway the model was just picked up but before she left I got some shots of her together in the matt flat finish which really suited this scheme.

Phil,
Help me understand your process a little....

Are Colors basecoat paints?
Do you apply any type of clear over them before weathering?
Weathering paints are oil based thinned with white spirits to make a wash?
Wiped off with a dry cloth?
Any issues wiping off your basecoat colors when wiping off the weathering paint?

Your results are fantastic! Thank you for sharing.

Hi kennyMac

Please see answers below

Phil,
Help me understand your process a little....

Are Colors basecoat paints? Yes base coats or cellelous

Do you apply any type of clear over them before weathering? No the wash goes directly on the base colours

Weathering paints are oil based thinned with white spirits to make a wash? That is correct

Wiped off with a dry cloth? That is correct

Any issues wiping off your basecoat colors when wiping off the weathering paint? The weathering oil paints are wiped off using turpentine or white spirit, this does not affect the base coats, different type of solvent to breakdown base coats.

Your results are fantastic! Thank you for sharing. Thank you for your kind words

KennyMac

Thanks Phil.... Love your work. I'm going to do a paint job like this someday!

Tim... Jeez, I've been flying jets for over 8 years now! Where have you been? Don't you remember me flying at Illini Jets in August? I do keep a low profile though!

Go get yourself some Tamiya window tint spray Joe. Aim for building the coats up as its easy to think its not covering and going over the top without knowing.

I was asked to test fly this Ultra flash today. We supplied the power in the form of a Kingtech 180 Turbine.... Wow is all I can say. The performance matches the look, and it looks bloody amazing! By far the best looking Ultra Flash out there. Great work by Phil yet again. I was saving this scheme for a model of mine, but glad it got applied to Steve's Ultra. It looks like an all new model now. Seeing it up close, I can honestly say that Phil has made it look even better than new ( Inside and out ) If I didnt already have such a backlog of models in the queue at Pinnacle Aviation, my current UF would be winging its way down there for sure!
Regards Al

Phil

great work and fantastic finish. I sent an email to the address listed on your website seeking your paint masks, nomenclature etc. based on this previous post. Any idea how much longer it will be before you can generate the below products.

cheers
buck

Hi guys, it's a shame I am not in the states as I think I would be very busy painting F-20UF's

With this in mind I am putting an F-20UF kit together.

50 meters of lining tape. (0.8mm wide)
20 hatch lining tapes (0.8mm wide)
An A4 sheet of water slide decals

A sheet of paint masks which includes
4 stars and bars
2 x large nose numbers for yellow and red.
2 x fin stars for yellow and red
2 x Fin numbers (same as nose number)
2 x serial number
2 x Squadron number
2 x NAVY, MARINES or U.S. AIR FORCE

I think this is all you need, you can select the nose number and the serial number, ie wife's birthday date, or wedding anniversary date, your birthday date. The blue schemes serial number is his wife's birthday date but in reverse. Always handy to keep you in there good books .

All that for $100 + $15 P&P

I will add this to my website with payment by Paypal
