Status: offline 		I recently sold all my gassers as I'm getting too long in the tooth to carry them in and out of the basement workshop and do all the setup at the field etc. and I am moving into electric!! Bought a couple of electric sail planes and converted my LT40 to electric and once again am enjoying the hobby. Among 50 years of collected RC "stuff" I found my old Hobie Hawk that I had unsuccessfully tried to fly way back whenin the late 70's early 80's. It was a little battered and moldy but decided to motorize it as had Brent Daily in Calif. I have recovered it in red transparent Ultracote and painted a white fuse and it looks great!!
I spent a day cutting the "Hobie Hawk" hawk head vinyl decal out of the blue film on the rudder and photoshopped it into a reasonably good reproduction so I can use waterslide decal paper to apply it to my new rudder. I also did one in reverse so I can put one on both sides of the rudder if I decide to do so. Don't know how much it will show through the transparent film?
I am looking for a copy of the large HAWK with wings open that was used on the wings on some versions of the Hawk. If you have a copy or relatively good image I would be happy to trade my logos for it??

They have a hawk logo on that website. It's not very large, but with some paint programs that can be solved.

For those that don't know how to copy a picture they see within a web page:
Move your cursor over the center of it and right click. In the middle of the menu that pops up will be a "save picture as" button. Choose it and then browse to wherever you want to save that logo within your pc and click 'accept' or whatever tells the software you're where you want to save it.

Well, here are 2 pictures captured from that website. I'm adding them to this post as examples for all the readers whom I spelled out how to take pictures from a website on the internet. They were about the 1st thing I saw upon opening pages within that website. Sometimes what you're looking for is right in front of your eyes, sometimes it isn't. I added all the explanation for anyone reading through here that isn't familiar with how to pick stuff off webpages.

Status: offline 		Here are the Logos I have now. I know one isn't original because they only made the one with the Hawk looking to the right. But if you want to put one on the left side as well it would look strange (at least to me) with the Hawk looking backwards. So I fixed that and although the copy isn't a perfect fit, it will do! I was hoping to encourage someone to find the spread wings logo by offering to swap - but what the hey - here it is for all.
If you have that other one from the pix I sent, you can either post it here or I can PM you my "secret home URL" !!

Status: offline 		Thanks Stackerjack that is exactly what I wanted. Thanks everyone for your help. I will post pix of the finished Hawk next week. I have to cover the wings and finish painting the fuse but that shouldn't take long. Conversion to electric should be swift but will have to wait a little until I finish my Cularis which is due for pick up on Tues. Also have the 1800mm Icon A5 on the bench and almost done and this will complete my electric fleet for the moment! Cheers!!

These are the parts I ordered but I have no idea if they will work or fit. It will be a trial and error thing - just moving carefully so I can reverse the proceedure if I have to -if it doesn't work. As you can see in the videos, it seems to be pretty good.

Turnigy Park300 Brushless Outrunner 1080kv
Folding Propeller Assembly 8x4.5 (Alloy/Hub Spinner)
TURNIGY Plush 18amp Speed Controller
Turnigy nano-tech 2200mah 3S 25~50C Lipo Pack

A pretty inexpensive way to experiment. I also ordered a little 4CH Frsky RCVR. These have been very good as I use it's bigger 8CH brothers in all my 1/4 scale stuff.

Thanks for the info on your power setup.
At the moment (until Sunday anyway) I used a Speed 400 brushed motor with a 3S 2200 LiPo.
It flew pretty good, good climb etc, then I let my friend have a flight, and he insantly opened it up to full speed, doing all the aerobatics possible (much to my annoyance) and, of course, the motor burnt out.
I've only just started flying electric, as you might have guessed, and several people are donating their dated brushed motors and ESCs. I thought I'd make use of them until I decide if electric flying is for me.
I'll be fitting a Speed 480 motor next.
Watch this space.

PS Is it possible to strip down a 3cell LiPo into separate cells?
I am an electrician, but don't know anything about LiPos

Status: offline 		Frankly - I wouldn't touch them!! For the price you can buy the configuration you want. I think it's just too risky to fiddle with them. They are a real danger if they fail and burn. The toxic fumes will force you right out of your house.! My 2 cents anyway!
Hey - contributions are always welcome eh! Long as they don't fail and lose you a plane!

Status: offline 		I find the elevators on my Hawk are very loose. In fact while holding the plane if I roll it on its side, they just drop off! Anyone come up with a simple way to fasten them on a little snugger? If I bent the main rod it won't slide through the fuse to reassemble. Found that out after a crash years ago. Appreciate ideas?

Well, being me, I did have a go at stripping down a 3S Lipo battery. I removed the outer heatshrink, plus another layer of protective material,then removed the protective stuff at the end where the connections are.
Findings: There is a small fibreglass PC board with large lands where the wires are soldered. There is so much solder that I think if you heated the board up enough to remove it, you could cause serious damage to something: maybe ME.
So I put it all back together, and now I'm going to buy a 2S battery.
