So I love this plane and I am enjoying putting it together but it would be awesome if horizon would make an optional accessory for some scale bush wheels.

Like these?

I mentioned them earlier in thread. They're from Topmodel CZ, but they are heavy. The H9 supplied axle was too small, so I used a 1/4 dia hitch pin (see pic) from the local farm supply store.

Yeah I looked at those as well. Just not crazy about ordering from there and the weight was concerning. I have the 6" dubro ones but just haven't taken the time to figure out how to mount them yet.

Do you think the stock landing gear will stand up to the bigger rubber? They will produce more stress ..

I ordered straight from Topmodel CZ. They were fast to ship, great with the communication, and a pleasure to deal with. I'm not crazy about the weight either, but I haven't anything else. They are much lighter than the floats that will be on there when these aren't, so I'm sure that the plane can handle it.

I have the 6" Dubro ones too, but they are a lot smaller. They look right on my 80" Page Cub.

I don't see why not. The only extra strees that I can see would be the extra leverage pushing the gear back if they hit something that stops them dead in their tracks. It will take a lot to stop these though...they should roll over almost anything. If anything they will stress the gear less since they will roll over stuff easier. The extra weight shouldn't be an issue on the ground since the weight isn't supported by the gear at that point.

Two flights on mine so far, the only problem I had was before the first flight. The book says you can adjust the rubber band tension on the gear according to flying surface. I used three winds per band. The plane will not hold its weight with less than four winds. I ended up putting a spring on mine in addition to the bands, works awesome. BTW my plane was running and range checked, ready to go, I taxied about 15 feet and it slowly sank to the ground and broke the prop with only three winds on the bands.

This is one great flying airplane. I think Hangar 9 hit a home run with it. I think a PNP version would be a hit as well, maybe $1199.00 with the floats included?? that would be awesome.  Mine has a DLE 30 in it and I have the floats, just nowhere to fly with floats at the moment.

How did yours balance out with the DLE 30? Did you need to add any lead ?

I did use some lead. my ignition battery is inside the fuse, it is 4 cell, each is about a half inch across and about four inches long. then I have 6 oz of lead in the front underside, I guess it is an air exhaust ramp. I could have added less weight if I put it farther forward. I.E. in the cowl area.   EDIT maybe the battery cells are three inches long.

Glad to hear about some maiden flights
Crusty chief is correct regarding the need for 4 rubber bands
per strut wound 4 wraps per the manual diagram.

This is a good starting point and you can increase the tension
from there with the additional rubber band
included with the model.

One of our developers is flying 6" Dubro wheels on the
older J3 Cub with no issues and the landing gear are basically
the same between both models

Hi all,
I changed my Hangar 9 J-3 1/4 scale landing gear over to O rings.(like the Robart gear). Works very well. The Super Cub is the same gear. I will post pictures of the set up if anyone is interested......

Don PS Crustychief, they fly off of Poway lake near you on Mondays from 1:00 to 4:00 !

Hey bladebender,

Have you figured out if the 35RA will be the right length for the cowl.............without cutting into the firewall to recess the carb. If you have to do that, the gas tank set-up will have to be changed.
I was gonna us a 55RA and decided against it because of all the changes that would need to be done.
My next thought was the 35RA.

Mrwad I am interested in your O ring instilation I have the Robart gear on my GP 1/5 Cub , my BUSA 1/3 Cub , my Sig 1/4 Cub , my BUSA 1/4 Cub , and I use O rings that I get from various Auto suppliers..I do find that they break even when they are not in use but they work fine other than that..None of the Robart gears have that airfoil cover thing that slides over ..I guess I guy could eliminate that and go with one of those little bag affairs that you tie on if it was a problem..I never use anything on any of mine..That way I can keep an eye on the O rings and replace them when they break...I would imagine with that cover and using O rings it might be a bit difficult to slide that cover off because the O rings could jam it on...It might take a bit more diddeling around..You know how the O ring ends pop out when they break and sort of stick out like little fingers..I wonder if 1/8"shock cord might work better..I think I am going to try that..I have that on one of my 1/3 Cubs ( I have 2 ) and it seems to be working better than anything so far...Or the Hanger 9 crew seems sure the Elastic bands is the answer..I hate to argue with them when I havent even tried them...The bands I got in my kit dont look like any other elastic bands that I know of... If we want an exact replacment we would need to go to hanger 9..The problem with most elastic bands is they lose their strech rite away...Just try pulling them and see if they go back to the same size..the longer you hold them streched the less they go back...I really like the shock cord..after you tie it you put a drip od ca on the knot then trim it with the nippers...It would slide inside that airfoil thing , probably taking up less room than the bands and I have never had one break so far..If you want one apart you gotta cut it apart... They are progressive when you pull on them..like the harder you pull the more tention there is because of how they work..the covering on the cord is like those little chinese finger traps we used to play with when we were kids..When you pull on them they tighten up and squeeze the cord inside them.. I am glad to have you guys posting your results . Thank you so much..I really helps us guys that are comming along behind you...My Plane has come with a Crushed wing tip with a little tear in the covering and a broken windshield..I am so disapointed but I cant figure out how it happened..It had to be before it went in the box because the box is okay...It had to take quite a bit of force to crush a wing tip rib..The winshield was rite beside it...I am glad I had witnesses to the opening and examining of the parts ...Because as I say its funny how this damage is inside the box and the box is okay...Nothing had been previously taken out as far as I can tell because the tape was still intact... Its almost like the wing has been stepped on but then there is the broken winshield rite beside it...Oh one other thing one of the little 1/4" dowl braces in the cockpit winshield area is broken loose..That I can easily fix...but I am sure starting to wonder if I should return this one...

OK, I'm back....

I have uploaded some pictures of the O-ring set up on my Hangar 9 1/4 Scale Cub. I used a piece of 4-40 threaded rod for the studs but you could use a 4-40 bolt just as well. The little rod is 7/8ths of an inch long from end to end. I then cut some aluminum tubing with a hole lorge enough to slip over the 4-40 rod. These are each 1/4 of an inch long. You could use brass too, I just looked in my junk box for something that looked about right. Some 3/8ths washers go on top of the tubing and then a 4-40 nut. What you are doing here is making a little post to wrap the O-rings around and using the washer to keep them from sliding off. You can use up to 8 O-rings per side and I would suggest not using less than 6 to start with. My Cub weighs 16 & 1/2 lbs dry. and 6 rings have been good. Gives some spring action without being too soft. I have the soft bungee covers on my plane, so I don't know how much room you have under the covers on the Super Cub. The o-rings to get are #216. This is the size that will work well. I bought a bag of 100 on Amazon.com for about 8 bucks. Just use "#216 O-rings" for your search phrase and they will come up or go to your nearest parts store and ask for #216. I'll try to answer any questions you might have If it will help...

Is this gear the same as the gear on our PA-18's ? What is the length of the O rings ? I am guessing at 1.25" I like the adjustibility of your set up ..Would you use the bungee covers or try and use the new fancy air foil covers ?

The PA-18 Super Cub gear is the same as the J-3 Cub. The O-ring specs for the #216 are: 1-1/8 ID, 1-3/8 OD and 1/8th thick. I don't know how much room is in the "air foil" covers. The studs with the washers and nuts will be about 1-1/8 inches tall when installed.

I flew mine twice today, 30 minutes plus with the stock fuel tank and the DLE 30. I am so stoked I can not even begin to describe it. BTW I still had a half tank left when I was done flying.
