Hey guys,

Been looking at the Super Cub myself and I must say i am very impressed with what i saw. I definitely want to go the gas route so the G26 might be in order. With that said, it seems like that G38 could also fit considering that it goes for the same price (kind of surprising), magneto ignition, and 11 oz heavier. Was also planning on using Spektrum A6010 servos.

Does anybody have any experience with the G38?

I am putting a G26 on mine and I was a little worried that the firewall was too light...It is no more than 1/4 lite ply....I would not want to overpower that airframe....

Can someone please take a ruler to the cowl and measure the size that a Super Cub logo would look good on the blue?

I'll send you a free set

The blue on the cowl is 2 1/16" wide tapering to a point at the front...it has a 1/4" stripe down the center that you might need to cover in if your super cub logo is white I would say if you use the rule of thirds the super cub logo should be somwhere around three quarters of an inch or a little less... Try your S and C at 7/8 " to 1 " ... Just a guess

I'm referring to the PA 18 Super Cub , I have the older white & red one and the new one is White & blue...I hear loads of parts have been upgraded- but i had hoped bits were interchangable given they are both 1/4 scale.

NoFlaps if you are talking about the 1/4 J3 The wing span and wing area are the same ,the wing attachment ,strut attachment all look the same , if you compare Manuals you will see a lot that look the same and some that look different...You can tell they are related for sure. The big differance of course is the J3 wing dosen't have flaps and the Super Cub has flaps .The tail feathers are a bit different.,the landing gears is a bit different but might fit...I hope this is what you were looking for...

Don't think this new PA-18 parts will fit the old one......the old one isn't really 1/4 scale.......100 inch wing vs 106 inch wing etc.

Has anybody had anytrouble with the little plastic ends the go on the tail brace wires? One of mine split while threading it on...It was going on strait...It was only on about 1/8" maybe a little more..Then when putting them on the tail one just snapped off...They seem really brittle...After the first one split I used hot water to help soften them a bit but it didn't help much it seems...I am debating getting a new set or making a set from clevis's ..I just wondered if anybody else had trouble...

I bought an older lightly ran g38 from a club member as well as another club member had one. Mine had been crashed twice hard  and other than prop and a muffler tube being squished it was fine no crank damage. I mention this as I had a SPE that all it took was a prop strike and the crank was done. Mine and my club members didn't have a choke so I would put my thumb over and crank until wet & then start with an electric starter. Never could flip start unless it had just been turned off (warm engine) There is an optional engine mount that holds a spring starter you turn it backwards the spring grabs and you release. Kinda like the old cox without having to connect the spring. It is a converted industrial engine so should last forever in our service. If I remember right it has two piston rings. There is a conversion kit for an ei ignition which takes a little less than 2lbs off the engine. The engine is heavy and the weight is carried forward. The carb requires a bell crank for your throttle linkage unless you buy a kit to reposition the carb (unless they've changed it now) The factory exhaust looks like a chainsaw exhaust and is quite restrictive. The exhaust is a rear exhaust and with the two planes I had to modify the firewall to accommodate the aftermarket exhaust I had. With what has been said about the firewall on the cub I would not recommend this engine without serious modifications to stregthen the firewall.  The side carb requires a large cowl to conceal it then choking is difficult or a smaller cowl will require a fair bit of removal. There is a home made ei conversion online that increases HP but if you are just looking at price I now run a dle 30 less expensive more pwr lighter. Hope this was some what helpful. It is a good engine will last a long time with enough modification can be made close to the pwr of the newer production engines @ the cost of roughly two of the new engines. if you were to buy all new

The older original H9 Super Cub has been discontinued for close to 10 years now nothing is interchangable between it and this one.

Thanks a lot for the thorough feedback. Although a good engine, i don't think it's worth doing all the extra modifications to be able to install the G38. After all, the whole point of this is to maintain a scale look and feel. I'm always worried that the recommend configuration yields to marginal performance. What do you think about the G26? Can we say it has enough power to pull the cub and get it out of trouble if need? With that being said, I also have the option of purchasing the OS 33 Gas Engine for a descent price. Any thoughts on that one?

Why would you want to put a G38 in a cub? You will have nothing close to scale flying it , you will have to put a pound pf weight in the tail, not to mention the stress on the airframe.I put a DLE20 in mine and it flies very scale with plenty of power.

Saito 1.20 in mine, and its perfect. Nice steep short field climb outs if need be. Will fly a lot faster than scale, but that's what the left stick is for right? For the guys wanting to install big gas engines, is it not going to bother you to have to hack up the beautiful scale cowling? That sure would be detrimental to the looks of the airframe, but each to their own I guess.

For those of you who haven't assembled the gear yet..........The fiberglass fairing that covers the bungee system is quite brittle when stressed.........pull the gromet from the bottom opening and make sure the opening is round. One of mine was egg shaped but the gromet hid the deformity. When I put the assembled bungee system into the fairing and and pushed the end through the gromet, the fairing cracked across the bottom. Near impossible to repair...........also, before pushing the end through the gromet, put some vaseline in the gromet and on the end of the tube that has to slide through the gromet.
For a repair, I wet the inside of the bottom of the fairing and dripped gorilla glue in the bottom and brushed it around. The white gelcoat still shows a hairling crack but, it won't get any worse.

Wheel comparison:

Dubro 1/3 scale cub wheel vs the stock wheel in the kit.............you have to make longer axles for the Dubro wheel.........that's about all.

Is there a reason to change other than looks? I have been flying the Hanger 9 4.25 pro lite on my GP 1/5 Cub and my Sig 1/4 Cub for 2 yrs and they work great so far...I did turn one off the hub turning too sharp once ...

Mostly looks..........I suppose in a off runway landing there would be somewhat less chance of ending up upside down. But then again, upside down maybe better than a roll out through a barbed wire fence. Lets go with looks...................

Put an O.S. GT 22 in mine. Instead of buying the interior kit, added some 1/8" plywood and painted it to match the interior. Rotoflow 14 oz tank and two LiFe 3200 Mah batteries. Had to add a 7.2 oz ingot of lead to the firewall to bring the balance to the correct location.

Made some nice bezels for the landing lights out of Wilton cake-decorating tips. they're polished stainless steel and with a little fabrication, really add to the light output. Have solid and flashing red and green LED's in the wingtips (yes, you can fit two LEDs into each wingtip light...use a little silicone sealer to hold them in), as well as the flashing white on the back of the rudder.

Throttle servo on the side-wall of the cockpit. Have the same arrangement with my other H-9 Cubs and Aeroworks S-2 Cubs. Sacrifice some scale appearance, but functionality wins out. Pilot occupies the rear seat.

Stock spinner would need to be cut out to fit the Xoar 17X6 or 18X6 prop, but just happened to have a Tru-Turn that would fit it.
