Here is my Enya 11CX D , interesting head design contra is in head but extends into cylinder sort of a variant on contra, guess it allows a thinner head,
Just pulled it off the shelf for the pix, wonder if same engine as glow except for head? martin

Martin,

I bought one from Enya - thinking to convert my early model 11CX to diesel, and it will only fit if you also get the diesel cylinder.

The 11CX bore is around 14mm while the contra diameter is 15.7. The same head is used on the 15 diesel as well.

Luckily for me Enya has a good returns & replacement policy. In fact Ken Enya is s delight to deal with.

Never did convert my 11 CX to diesel.

So to answer your question, the engine is the same as the glow except for the cylinder, which is recessed on the D to take the contra.

I bought one 2nd hand a couple of years ago and reported on it here:

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_4057089/anchors_9887959/mpage_1/key_/anchor/tm.htm#9887959

I have just put the new .11 and .15 "Twin Needle" ENYA R/C carb on mine, as an upgrade for the air bleed carb. It's in the queue for a further bench run to test out the new carb. I have not enough airframes for my diesels.

Many, if not all, glow ABC and AAN engines have a head that protrudes into the cylinder, I think it is related to the expansion of the cylinder being smaller at the very top where there is a flange, so you don't want the piston to go all the way up to the top of liner.

There is a long thread here on RCU on these engines and I've put some of my findings there; Why a .11CXD
The glow and diesel engine have a common crankcase but the cylinder timing is more timid on diesel and the supplied carb is a also smaller. These engines are very nice and smooth runnning, I've used the quiet muffler from Enya on mine which makes it sound even smoother.

The design of the Enya head is interesting being bore of the insert in the head that holds the contra is the same as the cylinder bore the contra easily transverses
both unlike the the Davis and factory Irvine heads using a smaller contra that does not project into the cylinder, so is really a contra in the cylinder like many of the classics such as PAW. This also eliminates the stuck in cylinder bore we see in the classics sometimes. For a 10size engine (11 of course) it quite a bit heavier than the OS and TT 10s. The twin needle carb that Fiery describes might be a good upgrade, might be a little on the pricy side?? martin

The older AAC version is actually about the same weight as an OS .10FP, but the later ABC versions are a little heavier and they also come with the larger and heavier .15 muffler. The stock carb is a very nice one, it is the metering type rather then just a plain airbleed (like the OS one), why would you want to change the carb?

Edit; It looks like the .09 carb on the first image, is that stock or was it replaced? All my .11 (AAC and ABC) have the meetering carb or a twin needle carb.

The real question Martin is, how does it run?

Mine is the earlier AAC version in a 2cc speed model, and it's a real pu55ycat to operate.

I got a little curious about this topic and decided to take the top off on one of my engines (AAC not an Ultra). Surprise, the counter piston is a traditional iron one and it has the same bore as the cylinder, but is sitting in a separate iron bore in a head button...
Seams that there are many versions of these engines;

I have this version of the Enya 11 CXDS engine.  It appears to be an ABC model.

I'm pretty sure that there's the 2.1 cc, ABC, 11CX-D Ultra, and the earlier 1.8 cc, AAC, 11CX-D. Both are 'Model 2201's. Apart from being less powerful, the 1.8 is a whole lot lighter.

Yes, I didn't see the step in your image and thought it was just a darker band from where the head would protrude down the cylinder of a constant bore. I can see now that our engines are the same, in terms of the bore.

The glow version has the regular design, a constant cylinder bore, with the head protruding down the bore. Here is the glow AAC engine;

Mr Cox Mine diesel the Bore for the contra piston insert in the head same as the cylinder thus easily moves between both, never had the glow version I can see that the projection of the glow head would take up space to reduce volume and have compression correct due do to piston staying pretty far down at TDC martin

The short prop shaft is a bit of a problem and the priming nipple on the muffler needs to be plugged when running (or you get to deal with a mess)

The shaft length is not a problem if you use the prop nut that goes down through the washer, this nut and washer are supplied with the engines (at least the latest ones have had them) and they can also be ordered separately.

I haven't used the priming nipple, I just start them as any other diesel with a muffler, i.e. prime though carb until it is a little rich and then flip.
If weight isn't an issue then the larger quiet muffler from Enya works well and gives a very smooth run.

Mr Cox noticed the supplied muffler in my pix and others has (2) sets of threaded holes for the screws the 11 uses the inner ones I assume the outer ones for the 15? martin

That's the muffler I have. The priming nipple hasn't been necessary and I've replaced it with a screw to prevent guck from spraying all over the model.

Yes, the supplied nut helps but you are limited more than you are with the 15D.
Tru-turn says that they can resolve this.

Ryan THX will do the same stunt on the muffler.
' a few drops down the carb and 2 or 3flips now and off it goes, there is a spacer available that goes between the muffler and engine brings it out an other 3/8ths of an inch or so thus clears the Fus.
trying to find a source, I care Rc in Canada where I got the engine does not have them martin

Post note think David Owen has them "down under"- Mr Cox on this site has one shows a pix

WHOOPS ERROR THIS SHOULD BE ON THE MPJET 061 POSTS NOT THE ENYA cx11

They used to have a dedicated muffler for the .09-.11, which was smaller than for the .15 engines. Now they only offer one muffler, the .15 one with an additional set of threaded wholes that are narrower and can used for the .09-.11 engines. This adds a lot of weight for the current ABC version (the ultra model) compared to the early AAC versions. The Ultra on the otherhand has a higher capacity than the earlier AAC, although both are named .11.

Ouch! Two nominal .11 models with different capacities? I can see that generating some confusion when spares are needed-especially in years to come.............things like gaskets, P/L sets,crankshafts.......Mind you I suppose the same argument can be applied to PAW 19's as well-the current ones are significantly larger than the early ones..........

The crankcase might be the same (it has the same marking) but most of the other things have change, and the glow and diesel versions are also different in terms of porting at least.
The AAC has a bore and stroke of 13.5x12.5mm making it 1.79cc or .109 cu inch engine
The ABC has a bore and stroke of 14.3x13.0mm making it 2.09cc or .128 cu inch engine.

So if the ABC seems strong for a .11 engine, it's because it is a .13 engine...
