I currently have a Spektrum DX6i, but I'm not sure how to customize the controls for use with the Leo. ??
Are there any cheap radios (under $75) that are more suited for this tank with minimal customizing?

I run my Leo with a Futaba Skysport T4YF 2.4 G.   I'm not sure it falls into the cheap category, but it works well with not much hassle.

Agreed, this is the Futaba I am using too, Futaba 4YF 4-Channel 2.4GHz FHSS Radio System, in my work in progress Tamiya Leopard 2A6 build.

I got mine here: http://www3.omnimodels.com/cgi-bin/woi0001p?&I=FUTK4200&P=0

You must make the rachet stick self centering and it is an easy part to install: http://www.artistichobbies.com/proddetail.php?prod=HSP78901

Also, I use this low cost rc system in all my 4 channel tanks and it is a really easy setup with the Tamiya DMD units!

The DX6i is a good radio, and programmable. I have to think it can be made to work. I have not tried using it with a Tam Leo, but I did use it with the new CLark TK20, and reconfigured the channels and control to make that board function exactly like I want. I also use it with my Tamiya Sherman with no issues.

Sorry I couldn't be more help with your specific issue with the Tam Leo, but I don't have one and I don't see one in my future. Perhaps someone else has a Spektrum radio working with the Leo 2???

its not the radio you need worry about but the compatibility of the radio with the reciever board, they all don't work together.
The DX6 is fully programmable and you should have no issue with it but if you want a low cost radio that you can program then buy the hobbyking T6a but you will need their reciever and buy the programmer cvord.
Or better yet buy yourself a Turnigy 9X and work with that, it will be the last radio you ever buy.

You can buy and orange brand reciever that works with Spektum radios for $6.00. The cost of the receivers is more important then the radio if you have a lot of tanks.

Despotes,
Since you already have the DX6i why not use that? Have you connected it to the LEO and tried it yet? What problems did you encounter? It is much easier to troubleshoot any problems that arise than anticipated problems that you believe might arise.
I don't own a LEO but I do own the DX6i I would be surprised if it could not be setup to work with the LEO.  If you need an additional receiver this would be the least expensive way to go. http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__11965__OrangeRx_R610_Spektrum_DSM2_6Ch_2_4Ghz_Receiver_w_Sat_Port_.html
I purchased several of these and they all work fine and for the price, any other solution would likely cost you more. YHR can attest to these I found out about them from one of his posts.
Check out the DAK website they have a radio section that has some valuable information I know they have several members that use DX6i transmitters. http://www.desertarmor.com/DAK_RADIO_ROOM/Radio_Room_2011.html

I have plenty of Spektrum receivers. The problem I'm anticipating is setting up the radio.
I just started building the lower turret so I haven't even messed w/ the radio.
Don't I need a self centering stick...?  Again, I have no idea how to customize the controls to work for a tank.

Spektrum is the worst for self centering sticks, costs you 70 bucks to have them do it. there are mods in this forum I have seen on spektrum just can't seem to find it. I would stick with the DX6 though, it is a good radio.

You do need a self centering stick.

Without it your tank can become a runaway freight train.

The kit for my Futaba was about $5.00 and took me about 5 min. to install.

I run my tank off the right stick on DX6i, using an Orange rx. Esc I'm using instead of a board, has built in mix, or the 6i can do it too.
Left stick runs the the turret and elevation.

I added a pair of momentary push button switches, tied to the flap and gear switches. These fire the cannon and turn on the laser sight.

Lets me drive the tank or fly one of my birds, just have to change the model memory.

Well I disagree with needing self centering sticks. I use my left stick for all the driving functions and the right for all the turret functions. i like to be able to set the throttle at a crawl and move the turret in a searching motion. It looks very realistic. You do need to be careful the stick is centered when starting the tank, that is why mine are always on blocks when I work on them.

I was under the assumption the stick had to be self centering. I'll give it a try since I use my DX6i for planes as well.
Now for a battery.  I have a bunch of Lipo's, but no Lipo savers like my Slash 4X4 uses.

There are way too many battery connector types.
