Status: offline 		It's an aeromodellers magic weekend, if you've never been it's well worth the trip for the hospitality and great array of all sorts of FF and control line models, mufflers are actually discouraged for this weekend.

Status: offline 		Hello OH; Facinating footage all diesel too, I have 5 or 6 of them myself, but my diesel history is nothing like that. I started with a Mills and went as far as buying a modern Enya 25 diesel, I have an Irvine 40D. One fellow helped me start up on the tailgate of his newish pickup truck before the first flight. When he showed up next weekend with a new car, I wondered why. Turns out his wife couldn't get all the black spots off the truck (or didn't want to) so she ordered him to get rid of it. He drove that car, a Kia Amanti, for 2 years before I asked him what happened to the truck, he told me.

I still fly Jim's planes every sunday, he prefers old timer style planes, but with 4-stroke engines, but lasst year his glaucoma got so bad he couldn't fly any more. He loves flying and the camaradery, social interaction, so he's right there offering bench help to any one who needs it.

I can't buy diesel here on my little island any more, and one day I'll go through the last 2 gallons I have left. Then I guess I'll have to make my own fuel,

Status: offline 		This is about the best I can do, Martin - cropped it out of a bigger photo. You can't make out much detail, but there's an unmuffled FP20 sitting on bearers which just stick out the front of it. The original design didn't have throttle control, but I had Dave Owen egging me on and it seemed too much a good idea to pass up.

The line tension comes from having the leadouts swept about 20 degrees aft of the CG, plus about 5 degrees of right thrust and some right rudder. It's huge fun to fly, and teaches you more about induced drag than you ever wanted to know.

Being a glow, this wouldn't seem to belong at Oily Hand Day (or this forum - sorry), but novelty models like this or Raglafart's various spectacular contraptions seem to be very much approved of, as long as they're unmuffled.

issue however, all kidding aside beats the flying lawnmower martin

Is the grand finale at night there "cow tipping"

the best we could do at the flying gators ultra lite field where we fly rc too was the cox engine launch just the engine with a streamer attached

If you look at the end of the video, I was able to set it down with pretty close to zero forward speed. It's tricky though! Doing a gently descending vertical landing might be possible with more practice. It would be cool to have it land back in an upright position, but that's basically impossible - it always falls over, largely because of all the outwards yaw.

I wonder if use of throttle will catch on in C/L. I presume it is operated mechanically by a third line. Or are the lines carrying signal to an on-board throttle micro-servo?

This was a conventional 3-line setup, same as has been used in Navy Carrier for many years. It doesn't seem to have caught on more widely in CL. Not sure why. Perhaps because one of the appeals of CL is the simplicity of the control system, and people aren't keen on a more complex bellcrank and handle? This might all change with cheap, modern 2.4GHz radio. You could have conventional elevator/flap acutation, with r/c throttle, LG etc.

Status: offline 		The Washboard is back together, now fitted with a lighter engine and mount assembly. It had an Anderson Spitzy in it for a couple of weeks and I got some much more encouraging flights out of it.
It's now got a Wen-Mac iv fitted along with a lighter undercarriage and wheels.
Just waiting for some decent weather out at Richmond so I can have another play with it.

As a junior in the Dunedin MAC (NZ) ca 1971 or 72 I recall one of my schoolmates, Peter Jones, fielding a scale .35 size C/L Spitfire with 4-line control-throttle and retracting undercarriage. The drag from 4 lines meant line tension was always a problem. I think he retired it before he crashed it-but he would have loved the modern electronic 'down the wire' additional function control systems that have been developed.

Status: offline 		Ah timing on this one, Talking with Bob Davis a week ago before this even came up and he said that if you put a post in the ground, had a swivel on top attach the line or lines to that
had a couple of servos throttle and elevator use an rc transmitter you could sit in a chair outside of the circle and fly it interesting idea martin
He flew a lot of c/l 50 years ago+ martin

Status: offline 		Well that's what we do do with electric RTP as well-and use nothing more than throttle control..............I flew it regularly in the 1980s and early 1990s-multi engine models were easy too.....
