I am seriously contemplating converting my YS powered Black Magic to electric.
What are your thoughts on the RimFire 1.60 motor sold by Tower Hobbies along with the Castle ICE 100A ESC.
The plane with the YS setup weighs in at 10#-5oz.

I have been looking at the E-Flight 1.60 and looks interesting.
What prop and ESC combination are you using on your Vanquish.

You might want to consider using the Hacker A-60-7S-V2. I Converted my VF3 over to electric several months ago and I am very happy with the performance of the motor for FAI/F3A programs. The motor is lighter than the E-Flight at 592grams. My BM VF3 weights 10.65 lbs with batteries ready to fly. The motor is turning a APC 20.5x14 @6473 Rpms, average flight temp. is 119 degrees F, Max. Amps is 69 and the max watts are 2240. The motor is only $214.00 from F3A Unlimited.

I tested my E-Flite Power 160 on my Black Magic today and obtained the following results:
Outside Temp= 52 degrees F
APC-E prop 19"x10"
pulling 75 amps
2697 watts
35.92 volts by the time I got to read the meter.
Everything was slightly warm to the touch, the ESC was cool.

Do you have any values to compare?

I really do not know if I am impressed; I was hoping to use at least a 20"x10" prop.
Please advise.

That seems like a really small prop for a 2m. I know Don Szczur has been running power 160s with plenty of power. I know he is running larger props but I do not know amp draw or anything.

Hi Arch:
I was sort of hoping to run a larger prop, but the specs on the Power160 is a max of 78 amps and a 20x10 prop. I will run the test again tomorrow and see what I get hoping that I had mis-read the meter. I will also try a 20"x10" APC-E prop and compare. The amp draw is not a linear function and I believe it is exponential, being on the upper end of the curve, I think I can run a larger prop without going over the 78 amps, I'll be close however. If a hot Florida day comes along, well we'll see.l

I'm running a Fury SA 60/67-230 "F3A" motor, Dualsky 90A HV 6 - 12 cell brushless ESC powered by 2 5S 5,000 mah lipos wired in series to obtain 10S, turning a Mejzlik 21 X 14 carbon prop on my Wind S Pro with great results. All up weight ready to fly is 10lbs 8 ozs.

I was using an APC 21 X 13W but switched to a Mejzlik carbon 21 X 13 at first before trying the 21 X 14 carbon because the APC flexed too much during certain maneuvers. I also realized the 21 X 14 really helps slow the aircraft downlines. In fact, the 21 X 14 flys the aircraft slower overall which enhances the pace of the entire sequence.

Watt meter showed 2,750 watts @ 75 amps for full throttle.

Hi Steve:
I tested again today using a 20"x10" prop and stull got some wild numbers on my meter.
Battery-2 5S, 5000maH, 25C hooked up in series to obtain 10S pack.
20"x10" APC-E prop
volts- 42.1
amp draw at full throttle, 95 (went as high as 101 amps)
Watts were over 3700

I am suspecting however, the APC prop was flexing because I heard some strange noise (at full throttle) from the prop area.
I stopped the testing, and, touched the wiring it was cool, the ESC was cool, the motor seemed somewhat hot (couldn't leave your finger on it for long), The batteries were also warm.
But they really drew down. Once they were cooled off, the total battery voltage was 38 volts (19 volts each).
I am really bewildered here because the motor specs are 2700 watts max,
78 amps max
10S battery.
Would you know if Don Ssczur has a website outlining the E-Flite Power 160 motor?

I run the 20-13 on dont have any numbers to compare, this prop just works for me, if aint broke done fix it is the way I go

I run the recommended prop the power 160 calls for im sure it will swing a bigger prop, its cool to the touch when I complete the intermediate sequence, I have know Idea how many amps it draws

go with the 20-13 its a good prop for the power 160 and you dont need full power I rarely go over half power

I believe you need to test your system using a larger prop no larger than an APC 20 X 13 Electric. Different props put different loads on the motor. The sound you're hearing may be your system warning you that you're exceeding the maximun recommended limits.

The Power 160 can run an APC 20-13 safely. It is however a higher KV(245) vs many of the other F3A type outrunners which are 230-235KV which can turn a larger prop without drawing huge amps. An APC 20.5-14 on an Axi F3A motor for example will pull about 85 amps on good batteries while the Power 160 will be pushing 100.

This is a good thread. Here is what I have gathered over the past year (or more) researching electric motors for my 2M Baby.

The Power 1.60 is a monster, probably under rated too. I know it performs amazingly well on 1.40 size 3D planes, with larger diameter props but lower pitch. Very quick spool up. The price is great, but I was a little put off by the weight considering my current project is known to be heavy from the start.

The new Hacker (A60 I think) seems to be a successful, light weight outrunner. I would have given that more consideration but it was too new when I made my purchase. Hacker has awesome product support and a good quality reputation. Hacker seems to have realized they were losing sales do to weight and have been working hard at staying in the market for high power, low weight applications like ours. Nice thing is you can buy from F3AU, and still get American Hacker support if ever needed.

I know there are a LOT of people running the HiMax motors. I don't know that I've heard anything negative yet. Seems to be a great value with strong performance. I think if budget is a concern and you can afford the weight, this motor is at the top of the list.

JAS supports the Fury motors, and flies them at the Nats. I would feel very good getting something from him. He is really awesome with support, recommendations, setups, etc. The price is good too.

I have not seen enough good reports for the RimFire motors. They are great sport plane motors but I have never seen one on a plane as big as a 2M.

At this stage of my life, I like to turn to either F3AUnlimited, or something like Schulman Aviation for parts. We can't really avoid things made in China yet, but we can support our peers who are dedicated to the hobby and providing good products to us at reasonable costs. Both of those places will give you honest advice and help you find the right equipment for your plane.

Well guys,I performed another test today on my BM electric conversion using the E-Flite Power 160. I must say the results this time were im pressive, I'm getting to like this motor, iot certain;ly has a great deal of power.
Todya I ran a 20"x13" APC-E prop and obtained the following results:
Voltage-38.08V, 84.4A, 3300W all at full throttle.
I suspect if I go to a larger prop I can get better results. For now, however, I am a bit comforted. Tomorrow I will go fly

This exercise has proven to be interesting, although somewhat confusing but that is what the learning curve is all about.
I would like to thank all the people who inputed information and comments as they were valued highly.

Orlando, great to hear, and it is nice to see some numbers with the Power 1.60. E-flite motors have a reputation similar to Hacker, where they are just fine being ran at the higher end of their ratings.

I have burned myself twice by using motors with too low of a kV for my application (not enough juice at full power). As such I am happy to hear some stats from higher kV motors like the Power 1.60. It is nice to know you have the extra power if needed, and won't kill the motor if you fly a little farther out and use more throttle.

The sound I was hearing was coming from an air-dam I made to deflect the air towards the motor. A bad glu joint was the culprit as one side of the dam became loose. A little epoxy with filler will fix that.

Hi Joe:
I was getting concerned when I began running the motor because the results I was getting were way over the written specs by E-Flite. They have underated the motor because you can easiy run a larger prop and basically, one has to to be able to get it to run at the recommeded ratings. But trial will tell, I plan on flying this week if time and work around the house prmitting.
I elected to go with the E-Flite 160 due to cost as I am a fixed income person (read that as retired) and have to watch my pennies (I wish they were dollars). I am satisfied with the decision I made. Let's hope it holds up.
