Well Helena flies!!! Four flights to date, with no real issues apart from the tailplane incidence needs adjusting to remove some up trim. To fulfill the LMA over 20kg flight test requirements all aspects of the flight envelope have to be thoroughly proven before a full exemption is granted by the CAA. This includes low and high (!!!!!) speed flight, power on stall, power off stall plus any prototypical manouvres, which in this case is fairly limited to sideslips!

The test flights were taken at Stow Maries Aerodrome, an ORIGINAL WWI aerodrome being restored to its former glory, heres a link to the facebook pages.

Status: offline 		Cheers David. Whilst the model is now flyable, there are lots of little bits that need adding. The most prominent are the art deco mudguards on the main wheels, very characteristic of the age. They are 8" diameter and 2 1/2" wide. They've been bashed into a leather sandbag and over a steel dolly after being annealed. The material is 1mm thick aluminium. They need a final trim once I have a matched pair.

Status: offline 		Beautiful job on a first rate airliner from the period. I came across what appears to be a quality scale Aeromodeller plan on outerzone a while back. Always been somewhere on the want list, but your model has certainly pushed up the interest.

Status: offline 		Thanks for the kind words chaps. To say I'm pleased with the way it flies is an understatement. It can fly so slowly that it takes a good few minutes to get round a decent circuit. The slats work great. They were locked in for the first flight, then unlocked during the second flight, where they only pop out when close to the stall. When stalled, if they are locked in there is very little aileron control during the mushy stall that occurs. But, with them unlocked aileron control is still good enough to fly the model in circuits whilst it mushes groundwards. The rudder balance panels are trouble free too. I was in some doubt as to whether I'd set them up right, opting for very slight toe in, the (my) theory being to keep them 'loaded' to remove any flutter around centre. The rudders are very powerful since they are almost completely in the waft of the four propellers. Power wise, although not by any means overpowered, its very comfortable for scale flight with cruise at 2/3 power. It amazes me that four twenty year old Zenoah 22 engines will haul nearly 80lb of blunt aeroplane!!

I'm hoping to get some more flying in with it over this festive break, fingers crossed,

Status: offline 		Here's a couple more in flight shots from the first days outing. The weather hasn't really been suitable for any kind of controlled flight since!!!! The mudguards are finished and just await fitting. It seems there were two types fitted to the full size HP42, both smooth and 'stringered'. It could be however that the stringers don't show up on some pics so I opted for the more labourious stringered version.

Status: offline 		Also, here's an air to air video taken from an electric camera platform. It was also the camera planes first flight but there are a couple of ace clips on the vid. I very much look forward to getting some more when we've both practiced!! It does show the HP42's slow speed though and that it doesn't get buffetted much by the winds.

Status: offline 		I hope Hutch won't mind me snaffling these pics and posting them here. He took them at a Christmas Fly In at Barkston Heath. The weather was truly awful but Neils camera (plus skilled use of said camera) takes the 25mph winds away completely!!! It took what seemed like a few minutes to crawl upwind, and micro seconds to get back downwind!! Many many thanks Neil, memorable pics indeed.

Status: offline 		Thanks guys. What Ian also fails to mention in his modesty - His superb flying skills! The wind, as he says was up in the +20mph region, I still can't understand how he kept the model level when he did the crosswind leg - a lesser mortal - the model would've flipped over and dived into the ground. Outstanding flying and the model is PDG, too

Status: offline 		The cover photo referred to earlier is on this book. It's a great book by David Boddington but seems to be out of print and unobtainable now.
I believe it is Peter Neate with HP42 in the foregound with Dave Toyer in background holding DH Comet[image][/image] also on an RCME cover too I think.

Can we expect to see the HP42 at shows in England this year?

Status: offline 		The smaller HP42 on that cover hangs on the wall in my loft space, its 11.5 feet span and was a very large model in its day. Peter Neate retired it and removed a few linkages and the tank plumbing and it has remained that way since the early 90's. The covering appears to be silk over tissue, plus lithoplate. The silked areas are extremely fragile and any thoughts on getting this old girl flying would have to include a full recover, which in my opinion would spoil the model and the heritage it has, so a hanging it will stay!!

Status: offline 		Here's another vid in slightly more favourable conditions. The model has completed all (plus a good few extra while I got it sorted) of its test flights for 'over 20kg' LMA scheme. So it is all now down to the small details. Now the CofG is right, I can glaze up the canopy, I actually made it into a hatch, seemed sensible. The hatch is removed by first sliding back the two windows which allows access to the retaining screws. Lithoplate framing and a lithoplate nose next. Made up some prop hub washers a bit more in keeping, got the mudguards all fixed up, the lighting too although I have blown the landing light in the nose by giving it 6v when it should have only been 4.8v, all markings are now complete. Heres some pics.

Also, I like to keep a models dedicated tools together so I've made a box to store all the tools and bits that get taken off for transport, sort of a Handley Page service tool kit, the struts get stored in a mechanics 'spanner wrap' type canvas bag. I'll paint some HP type logos on it or something.
