Hi guys...

Thought you might want bigger updates rather than lots of little ones, so here is the past weekend's progress:

Pic 1: Aluminium brackets to add strength to the canopy frame.

Pic 2: I cut the rear deck off the fuselage to provide access to the canopy slider ram. The top section is removable but will be hidden as much as possible.

Pic 3: This is the extent of the removable deck.

Pic 4: Planning out the ram installation and canopy mechanism.

Pic 5: I finalised the tail wheel retract but ran into a problem with the steering with a forward retracting unit.

[edit]
Typically tail wheels retract backwards (unit rotates forward) and I would use a spring in each steering cable to cope with the slack but in my case the steering lines require an additional 75mm [3"] as the wheel retracts. I'll do some more research for options or if you have ideas/experience with this, let me know.

Cheers

Goose

Goose, I know your inner turmoil well, I have a similar affliction. You are correct about the canopy shape, the full scale does not have a teardrop canopy, it is actually straight along the sides at the opening. This of course causes problems with a sliding mechanism. I have a giant TF P-51B kit and I've made a mold for that canopy already, so it's easier to fix and I've already made a working clam shell opening system, totally different from the problems you face here. Press on and use this as a stepping stone to that dream P-51 you will no doubt have one day!

Luke

Well, well... look what the cat dragged in

Luke! Good to see you still around young man.

Hope all is good with you and that you are putting those building skills to good use.

This project has been around for years, bypassed by those with less work and more flying, but given the situation (read lack of $) it's time to get 'er done.

I'm enjoying the challenges as you do with this sickness that we have *lol*

Cheers for dropping by and I hope you stick around bud.

Goose

PS: That's the first pic I have seen with covers on the radio equipment... interesting.

Hi GL...

I typically use Modelmaster zinc chromate green as the base and lighten/darken it to suit.

Cheers

Update for this weekend is resolution of the tail wheel installation and steering challenge.

I resolved it by mounting the steering servo (Hitec HS225) directly to the Sierra retract unit. It added 41g to the tail wheel assembly but I'm planning to save more than that with rudder/tail mods.

I used a Dubro servo saver to avoid stripping the gears off the servo and the springs keep the wheel nice and straight for retraction. Another bonus is that I can now trim the tail wheel for straight running.

Now I can move on to getting the tail feathers installed and will probably rebuild the rudder this week.

Cheers

Goose,
Luke's post above says it all as far as your troubles with the canopy and rails. The pic really helps too.

On my Royal/Marutaka P-51 I had to use a TF canopy as it was a better shape and size than OEM. I solved the problem by forming a "ledge" at the fuse top along the cockpit and then installing the rails parallel...using the widest space I could get based on the rear end constraints. You then have to offset the slides to the inside at the front of the canopy frame. This was about the best way I could figure short of redesigning the framing of the fuselage after the fact

A few shots of my solution and very humble "office" may help to stir your creativity to come up with something that will work for you and those cool rails

Hey Fret...

Thanks for the post.

I have done a similar thing as in build a 'shelf' for the rails and planned to keep the fore end as close as possible whilst keeping the aft end as wide as possible. It seems the TF is a little more parallel than your Marutaka but the canopy will get squeezed a little when open (~ -10mm).

Cheers!

Sounds like a plan! The FW-190 Focke Wulf had converging rails resulting in a squeeze of the frame and perspex when open by design in the full scale...just a bit of trivia.

I have enjoyed watching your build...terrific so far.

Looks like we're using the same pilot series

Hi guys...

Progress continues this past weekend and with a short break over xmas coming, you know where I will be

V5 of the canopy retract mechanism seems the most reliable and is nearly finished. You can see where I have ended up from the picture...

I also took a forstner drill bit to my rudder again to lose some more weight.

Cheers

Goose

Hey guys...

Finished up the canopy slide mechanism tonight... it's not pretty but it works and is reliable during cursory testing.

Pic 1: Open
Pic 2: Closed
Pic 3 & 4: The guts

The blade is made from PCB and there is a ball nut sliding in the track. The front bolt is adjustable up and down to set how much pressure holds the canopy down. The bend in the track corresponds to the cockpit rail and turtle deck so the canopy slides backwards a short way before moving downwards like the full size '51.

Oh, Merry Christmas...

Cheers!

Hey guys...

More progress.

Apart from the sliders and rails, the opening part of the canopy is complete. Manually pumping the ram results in solid movement and stops... I'm happy with that for now.

Pic 1: Working on the stab fitting and elevators. I chose to use a single snake to route around the significant tail wheel assembly and brazed a fork for the aft end. I did it this way so I could mechanically tune the elevators for levelness and the offset snake. This shot is looking up from aft and below.

Pic 2: Starting to look more like a Mustang... and you can see where I took a forstner bit to the rudder. It now weighs around 90g.

Pic 3: Even a temperature and humidity controlled environment, the kit is full of bananas

Pic 4: Yep it's time to get the wings underway. Merlin doesn't seem interested, but this feels like progress.

Cheers

Goose

Update:

The first wing is underway and frames up fairly quickly due to the die-cut ribs and doublers.

For those who have not built a TF kit before, it's worth mentioning that the laser cutting is very good while the die-cutting is just ok. One rib was die cut upside down and two ribs only received half the die.

While these are not big issues my feeling is the quality of the cutting is directly affected by the quality of the supplied wood. As mentioned before, a significant amount of balsa supplied in this kit is of the hardest wood I have ever seen. It looks to be balsa but for example, the aileron TE (partially die cut) is so hard, the die has skidded off at an angle and wood breaks before it is cut.

Determining hardness is speculative at best, but to give you an idea, the aileron TE is around 12" long, tapers from 3/4" to 1/2" and is 1/4" thick. It weighs 23g. The replacements I cut from what I would consider medium-hard 1/4" balsa weighs 6g.

I'm not complaining, it is however easy to see how these builds end up at 25 to 35lbs.

Onward ho...

Someone asked via PM what modifications I was planning for the wings.

Not much to be honest... I plan to correct the dihedral from 6 deg. to 10deg. and will shim the gear to suit (I have the awesome 88 deg. Sierra retracts which while expensive, are a work of art).

Both the flaps and ailerons will be driven via the RDS (rotary drive) system which worked extremely well on my Corsair and eliminates all external horns.

I'll also glass up some gear doors and I haven't yet decided what to do about the radiator scoop.

That's about it for mods, the rest is by the book.

Cheers

Ha! Anxious indeed.

It's been 15 years since I last built a Top Flite kit and compared to today's methods the construction of the wing on this model is significant. It's built like a brick ****-house as we say in NZ

I would be surprised if one has ever been lost to wing failure. Healthy spars, double shear webs and doublers make for a very strong wing. For any new builders out there, the strength of the aircraft is in your joints. Make them tight and accurate and you will do well.

You also appreciate how much work needs to happen at the factory to produce ARF's. I'd love all newbies to build their second plane after learning to fly on a trainer.

I'm carefully assessing each piece as it's added and continuing to replace overly heavy wood. I'm also making all the parts for the second wing which will go together in perhaps half the time.

I'm putting Sierra retracts in this bird, which do require you to modify the ribs and rails to suit. Interestingly I got one to fit perfectly but if the rails are both glued in, you can't get the retract out. Not that I am expecting any issues that require the removal of the units but I have in the past omitted maintenance access and Murphy bit me good.

Therefore, most of today was spent making a removable rail as seen on the right side of the picture. There are two L brackets bolted through the wing rib to support the retract plate and transfer the load to the rib. I also added 5mm to the left rail to align the strut correctly now that the dihedral will be fixed to 10 deg (total).

More to come, cheers for watching...

Goose

PS: Someone at the model shop gave me a cold on Thursday so progress is slower (and more drug induced) than normal...

In a marathon effort, I... sorry, we managed to finish both wings this weekend. The second wing always goes faster and more so because I pre-made all the manual parts as I built the first wing.

Back to work tomorrow so back to a part-time schedule but progress is encouraging so I'm hoping to install the second retract tomorrow along with possibly joining the wings. I'll have to make two new wing joiners as I've changed the dihedral angle.

Happy new years guys...

Hi Goose, so happy to see you got over the canopy hurdle and what great strides you are making now. I like the looks of your gear alot more than the Robarts I put in mine. Keep up the great job, I'll be watching.

Thanks Leroy...

The canopy isn't over yet... got to get attached and working but over for now

The Sierra gear is awesome... I modified the rails to withstand the punishment of my landings but I know the gear will hold up.

Cheers!

Your welcome, the gear mounts are one of the weak spots with this kit. They need to be boxed in and glassed and it wouldn't be a bad idea to trade the maple blocks with aircraft ply set deeper through the rib held in with plenty of epoxy and another forward rib doubler would also help. Inboard mount is more challenging but don't leave it as instructed. Better to do this before sheeting goes on than to find out about the bad mounts afterwards. I don't know about Sierra gear but the Robart gear for this plane has a way to strong a spring in them, I cut 5 coils off mine so they would work on touch down and not act like a stiff leg. Goose this is for those who may build this beauty some day and not know of this problem, you have things in control on yours.

Good call Leroy...

The outboard rails are very well designed in my opinion and the inboard ones are my design so I only have myself to blame for any failure

I'll look at them a few more times before closing the wing to be happy.

Cheers
