I am considering purchasing a laser cutter and I have a lot of plans of the older pattern planes of the early 70's and 80's
I am going to cut parts for the fuse and wings and make canopies.If there is a interest in getting one of these short kits let me know and I will send a list of the plans I have.

Status: offline 		Vmeek,    what is your definition of   "short kit".           Mine is    a   epoxy glass fuselage,  foam core wings and stab and  bulkheads.   No  wood or hardware.

Status: offline 		As I said in my post a short kit will be a WOOD fuse if the plans allow no glass.
A canopy if I can find one to fit.
Built up wings
No hardware.
I am making a list of the plans I have and will post them later.
If you have a set of plans and want to send a copy or a PDF I can let you know if it can be done.
I dont have the laser yet but it shoulkd be here next month.

Status: offline 		Short kits are still very popular and being cut by a number of companies. Short kits are usually just the ribs and formers, some places will cut the fuse sides. Depending on where you bought the plans will count for a lot. I'm a plans builder and buy most of my plans from MAN or RCM. I would never buy a short kit that was cut from any of these plans. There are too many mistakes drawn into them, the sizes are off on too many parts. Example, right now I am ready to head to my wood shop to cut the kit from plans I bought from MAN. These plans were inked by Joe Demarco. Mr. Demarco inked plans for decades and I don't think he ever used a ruler. On the plane I'm cutting today it is supposed to use a 1/2 inch LE on the wing and the ribs should be notched for that half inch. The LE shown on the plans is under size and the rib notches vary in size from 1/4 to 1/2. That is the first mistake I noticed. There will be more I'm sure. To date I have never had a set of plans inked by Demarco that wasn't full of mistakes. Mr. Demarco would draw in something that was supposed to be a certain size but he figured close enough is OK.
If your going to offer short kits you should have the plans redrawn using a CAD program or you will be cutting a lot of mistakes. I don't mind the mistakes too much when cutting my own kit from plans but if I bought a short kit that was laser cut I would demand all the parts being the correct size and fit.
Just something to think about. I have a set of plans that were CAD drawn and so far I think they are perfect. I can't find any errors in them so far.

Status: offline 		I generally scan and move the parts into Illustrator.
With my wife being a graphic artist for the last 25 years she has got me hooked on Illustrator because it is 100% easier than cad.
I can take one rib and trace it the scale it to any size progression I need.
Take the root rib draw, it then scale it all the way to the tip rib with the spar slot lightening holes and anything else needed.
I also use Profilli wing and fuse programs to create my parts.
I just finished building a giant super sportster from a set of plans and had no problems fitting the parts.
I am also retired from IBM and I know that when you get a set of plans scanned from one of the copy places that they are NOT A TRUE COPY size wise and can be up to a 1/4 - 1/2 in.
off in size up or down or both depending on the age and wear on the feed rollers.
I plan to build or pre fit all the parts I cut to make sure they fit as close as they can but this IS more like rocket science to get them perfect.. ( And I flunked sand box in school!).

A little about me...
I have been in the hobby 51 years I started out with control line dreaming for the day when I could afford a escapement setup to truly fly.
I have been building kits and scratch building for the 51 years.
I am retired with way too much time on my hands.

Status: offline 		My point is just what John said, I don't know anything about redrawing plans but I know all about the problems using plans. I just spent a couple hours cutting a kit for a very old design, I bought the plans from MAN. If I had a laser cutter close by I would have used him to cut the formers for the fuse. Even with a good scroll saw using the super fine blade I broke a coupld of the 1/16 ply fuse formers. A laser cutter would have been a big help. I see the formers aren't a perfect match but at least on these plans they are close. I have been building my own sense 1956 so the building part is easy for me, it's the fit that makes me a little crazy er. I tried using a CAD program once, I couldn't draw a straight line with it. When I have a copy of plans made for me at Kinko's I tape the originals to a window and over lay the copy to make sere they are a match to the originals. I have never gotten a copy that wasn't correct but they have had to do them a couple times to get it right. If your going to redraw the plans I have a set for a great plane that is the worst nightmare I have ever build but the plane is fantastic once built.

Status: offline 		My laser is due in about the 12th of Nov.
I am right now creating the parts for the A-10 warthog.
This is going to be a wood and or fiberglass kit.
I have the canopy for the kit also.
This was originally set up for ducted fan.
It can easily be converted to electric.
I will also be accepting plans from people that need parts cutout for kits.
The picture is of the parts for a SR-71 parts.
I have not as of yet figured out the cost of the services or kits.
But they wont be outrageous.

Parts came out great.
I cut the parts from a set of plans that were mailed to me
The builder had two sets made so that any variation in the plans will also be in his plans and the parts will match both plans.
