Are there any special techniques/precautions for recharging a lithium ion battery that has been totally drained? (model was lost in a cornfield for a while due to dumb thumb)

Li batteries don't do too well with over discharging. They have a minimum discharge and react poorly to charge after an event like you describe.
The reaction has been described as "Burst and Flame" in the past.

Lithium chemistry batteries will almost certainly be beyond safe use if allowed to completely discharge as you've described. Quite frankly, bin the battery and don't risk it in another model (chances are your charger will flag up an error anyway) - batteries are so cheap these days it's a false economy to try to recover it for reuse.

Thanks to both of you. I had read that it was not good to recharge a totally discharged battery, but was not willing to just throw it away before I asked and received confirmation from the group that it was not safe to depend on it to fly with.
